Integrated Combat Support Services

When you say the word “Mercenary” to the average citizen of the Inner Sphere, the first image that comes to mind is usually a Battlemech striding across the battlefield wreathed in gunsmoke, or a heavily armored tank crushing all underneath its treads. Some might even think about the infantryman running to the sound of the guns.

Few think about the less glamorous, but critically necessary support troops. The supply clerks and transporters that keep the troops in the line supplied with all that they need...The medical personnel that keep the warriors healthy...The engineers, preparing both fighting positions and barracks, building bunkers and bridges, and tearing down other structures that impede the mission.

ICSS fills those needs for other units that lack the internal resources to do them themselves. They are also commonly called upon to help prepare for, or recover from, planetary invasions. Either shoring up defenses, or clearing away the rubble to start fresh, ICSS is ready to go to work. ICSS has also been called upon in the past to respond to large scale disasters, either natural or man made.

ICSS does not accept direct combat assignments, and maintains only a nominal self-defense force. Fighting positions, bunkers, and bases constructed by ICSS however, have turned the tide of battle on more than one occasion, to say nothing of their more direct resupply and medical services.

Clan MacFeargus...Scavengers, thieves, gypsies, pirates, scoundrels, con-men, and carrion crows. All these things and more, are names the Clan has been called over the years it has roamed the periphery and outer rims of the Inner Sphere.

Comprised primarily of members of the MacFeargus family, their spouses, and battlefield orphans picked up on their travels, the Clan MacFeargus follow conflicts like ravens seek a fresh battlefield. In times of war, the Clan scavenges the detritus of war. Fallen mechs, shattered Combat vehicles, discarded equipment are all gathered up, sometimes even before the bullets stop flying. The Clan makes no distinctions regarding the source of their loot, even searching through abandoned civilian buildings and homes for items and supplies with which to make their living.

The items recovered, are then gathered together, polished up a bit, then sold to whoever has the cash to meet the asking price. The Clan has been known in the past, to sell equipment and supplies to both sides of a conflict within a period of days. Occasionally, the Clan will manage to piece together a working combat vehicle or mech, in which case, the Clan may decide to retain the unit for their own use, but most often it is sold as well.

In less active times, the Clan turns to whatever holds the most profit potential. Past moneymaking endeavors have included taking a short term mercenary garrison contract, hiring the Clans technicians out on a per diem basis to mercenary units in need, and bounty hunting. Rumors have also dogged the Clan regarding suspected Pirate raids and betrayals, but to this day, no formal charges have been filed, nor has any substantive evidence been produced.

The Clan's most recent choice of employment has many outside observers scratching their heads. Leaving their usual Periphery haunts, the Clan MacFeargus is apparently attempting to “Go legit”...or at least give that impression. After registering with the DMM, the Clan has accepted a Garrison contract for a mid-sized manufacturing concern in the Lyran Commonwealth. Observers familiar with the Clan suspect a scam of some sort is in the offing, but others point to the generous cross-training offered to the Clan's technicians as part of the contract, and feel that the benefits to the Clan will keep them honest...at least in the short term.

Equipped with a mix of older mechs and pieced together Battlefield salvage, the Clan prefers to avoid pitched battles if at all possible, favoring ambush and deception as their stock in trade. Combat vehicles are also acquired primarily through salvage operation, but also include some discount purchased items and a few like the pair of Main Gauche light tanks that the Clan refuses to discuss the origin of.

The Royal Grays

There are many planetary government styles embraced by by various worlds within the Inner Sphere and known periphery. One of the more common is that of hereditary Monarchy. Not really that surprising, considering the semi-feudal nature of the great Houses. However, when a planetary system changes hands, the new House Lords are unlikely to maintain the previous government/royal family, and as a result, there is a small, but significant population of "Royal Families in Exile". This population swelled significantly after the Clan Invasion, as well as during the various border disputes.

The Royal Grays consist of exiled royalty, second sons, and illegitimate (Though acknowledged) children of Royal peers. Besides the normal qualifications, a member of the Royal Grays MUST be able to prove direct connection to the peerage. Officers must be able to prove a claim to a Barony or higher, and Command Level requires Ducal rank. The applicant need not actually hold the title, just prove a legitimate claim.

Remarkably well funded, the Royal Grays are known for having the best of everything available. If it can be purchased, the Royal Grays just might have one. (Or more) However, this does not extend to the unit's mechs. Coming as they do, from long lines of succession, most of which were also military/mechwarrior families, the Royal Grays tend strongly towards "Legacy" units. Mechs that have been in the Family for generations, if not centuries. Lovingly maintained, and often lavishly upgraded, but ancient nonetheless. If destroyed, the Royals will attempt to replace the lost machine with an identical model. Failing that, a "suitable" replacement will be selected, with SLDF "Royal" designs being preferred over all others. Only one Clan mech is currently part of the Royal Grays at this time: A “Great Wyrm” that was captured by its current pilot on a recent defensive operation. Having lost his original mech in the process, the new owner has accepted the Clan Mech as “Spoils of War” until such time as a more “Suitable” mech becomes available.

Mission specialty (To date): Garrison

The Royal Grays are a flashy unit, well suited to parades and other highly visible positions. Members are equally comfortable in the cockpit of a mech and the cutthroat atmosphere of court intrigue.

Paint Scheme: Gray, with white trim. Additionally, each pilot's mech bears his or her Coat of Arms over the left breast.

Unit Symbol: A Crown at the juncture of two crossed lances.

Combat specialties: none at this time

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.
