Instead of adding arcs why not just have free "roll overs" which would save ship movement for other tactical advantages. Rolling over is one of the special maneuvers for BT warships that essentially has a badly damaged vessel reverse its side (flipping with movement) to bring its less damaged (armor and weapons) side to bear against an opponent. Belts may eliminate that component from the movement phase giving ships so equipped unprecedented speed of action. One thing to remember is that Firing Arcs have to be balanced in game so belts may need to have counter mass.

less than 500k tons - one forward belt (FL/R)
500k to 1M tons - two belts (FL/R and AL/R)
more than 1M tons - three belts (FL/R, L/RBS, and AL/R)

Your right on the era similarities Blacknova. Kind of makes sense for the "romantic" combat of the BT universe. I wondered why BT just didn't term their ships first to sixth rate but maybe that is too much from the age of sail (jump sail?). ;)

I had thought the same thing about rates as well.  But the ratings would need to have been on firepower and not gun numbers, which would change a ships rating over time.  Based on guns number, ratings would be meaningless, much as they became later in the 19th century as the cannonade replaced the top deck cannon.

Number of guns would sure be interesting to count but the Rate(s) correspond to BattleTech Classes.

Sixth Rate - Corvette
Fifth Rate - Destroyer
Fourth Rate - Frigate
Third Rate - Cruiser
Second Rate - Heavy Cruiser/Battlecruiser
First Rate - Battleship

I agree, and the 42pdrs were later dicarded for being too heavy on the lower decks of the bigger rates, though the French held onto them for longer.

Yep, similar calibres, but more guns on the 1st rates.  However, many Admirals and Post-Captains preffered the 2nd rate, as it gave up only a little in firepower, but was far more agile.

Than of course there was the massive Spanish 1st rate, the Santisima Trinidad, a four deck, first rate with 120 guns.  Taken as a prize at Trafalgar, I think she was lost in the storm that blew up following the battle.

None really, unless you write it so...

Rates are pretty arbitrary in BT since any ship class can mount any class or caliber weapon, enjoy any-size engine (for speed & agility) or any amount of armor for protection. I mean, on the extremes there's a difference between a 2.5 Million ton WarShip and a 150,000 ton WarShip, but for the bulk of BT's ships and their weight - not much.

Well 1st Rates that had that many guns (120) in Total War: Empire were known as Heavy First Rates.

Yeah BattleTech is pretty arbitrary with its ship classes a massive Battleship could match a small Corvette. I don't consider the Fox a Corvette for example but more of a Transport.

Not entirely uncommon, WWII corvettes were quite slow also, they only needed convoy speed. Not all warships are built according to the "faster than anything stronger and stronger than anything faster" concept.

No, quite a few are built on the "strong and fast enough" concept.
The escorts in WWII only needed to keep convoy speed + a few kts.
The R-class Dreadnoughts only needed 21 kts to keep up with the fleet.
