CGL Missing A Pile of Money
« on: March 20, 2010, 11:16:58 AM »

Not sure how many of you have heard this yet, but since I didn't see a thread about it on the forums I thought I would start one.

http://www.orloff-academy.net/?p=976

Basically the long and short of it is that $850,000 is missing and that it seems to have fallen into some execs pocket over a 3 year period, something CGL blames on outdated accounting practices but which sounds to me suspiciously like outright embezzlement. To be clear this is a huge amount of money for any company to lose, and CGL is certainly not a huge company by any means.  Because of this it is possible Catalyst will not be able to pay the licensing fees for Shadowrun and Battletech.

Interestingly enough there was $850,000 to steal, which does mean that the BT and Shadowrun properties are able to be financially sound, so hopefully some other company will pick up the properties if CGL drops them.  What makes me rather sad is I think CGL was doing a good job with both properties.

I did see this news but to be honest didn't realize how dire the consequences could be. It is a damn shame cause CGL was doing a fantastic job for what it had.

That is very sloppy accounting, if thats what it was. Does anyone know which writers have left?

I don't.  On the shadowrun side of things apparently most of those writers have left.  I am not sure about the BT writers, it may be that things are different there.

Yeah it looks like some Shadowrun products have been pulled due to the freelancers pulling there copywrite over lack of payment.

I'm not aware of anyone who was dismissed at CGL but I have limited knowledge of the inner workings there. Sucks for Shadowrun. I hope Interstellar Ops is released before BattleTech goes down - and hopefully that won't happen at all.

Well.......If there are still investors out there, there's this alternative setting being written........

Seriously - it worked to revive Traveller after Imperium Games collapsed in the Asian financial meltdown in the late 90's.....

I'm jus' sayin'..... ;D

I doubt Battletech will vanish, and let me also stress that a lot of what is being said right now is mostly hearsay.

What -might- happen is that CGL will be unable to pay their licensing fees.  IF that is the case more than likely some other company will come along and snap it up.  While I wouldn't argue that BT is the largest tabletop game out there (I suspect that goes to Warhammer 40K) it does have a very loyal fan following and does turn a steady stream of profit.

Yeah, i'm assuming that the SR license use's more freelancers as it seems too be those products that are being pulled.

I trolled around for information last night on these developments and while it is a serious matter the fate of CGL is not dire. Now exact details except for what have been released are hard to come by but the company apparently wanted to defeat rumors like Catalyst not being able to pay the licensing fees for Shadowrun and Battletech. Sadly such unfounded gossip spreads quicker then the truth. So bad stuff yes but it doesn't threaten CGL's position in the here and now.

There was some nonsense talk about Cthulhu Tech having issues which turned out to be only hearsay - and Shadowrun's troubles are in the process of being ironed out. (It was a writer's copyright issue that's being resolved.)

So far I only know that BT's chief layout gent has left, but everything else I've heard can't be confirmed.

Either way I wouldn't worry about CGL being able to pay for the licensing fees. SR and BT is their bread & butter. They've done financially well enough to expand their table top games not once, but twice (CTech and Leviathans) - if anything the outright loss of $850,000 dollars is what's troublesome. (And I'm guessing CGL's recent foray into finding a new hardcopy publisher is what brought the discrepancies to light. I got ten quid on it.)

For the record, GW is the largest table top game producer in the world with an estimated worth of around $300 Million USD. (I should know. I worked for GW US Corp in late 2007, early 2008.) But not envy them - they're lucky to still be around.

Why?
