Another BT Ripoff
« on: August 02, 2018, 08:38:26 AM »

Always was amazed BT wasn't sued for more ideas they ripped off in order to create the dynamic universe it ultimately ended up. Tak, Calderon and I often over the years have laughed at some of the Easter eggs we've found over the years.

Its been quite awhile since I've noticed a new one but on my way to work today at the local deli a commercial came on talking about 50th anniversary of 2001 a space odyssey a movie I haven't seen since a kid, and what do I see?

What I believe to be the inspiration for Spheroid Dropships

And possibly Aerodyne

Spherical landing craft appear in sci-fi literature as far back as the '50s at least, and while they don't have landing legs per se, the Venera landers for the Soviet space program (landing on Venus) were often spherical in shape.  I've no doubt 2001 had an influence, but there's been plenty of similar out there, and a sphere makes a decent pressure vessel, anyway.

As for aerodyne DropShips, Von Braun was proposing similar as far back as the late 1940s, among others, and the early BattleTech devs probably would have been familiar with the Space Shuttle development program.
