to me there are three things that make the SLDF Field manual stand out as bland

1) Unlike FM 3085, it is describing a hyper massive military at the height of it's power.

2) Unlike the House Field Manuals from a decade ago, they are describing a hyper massive military with little in the way of history or tradition.  they do not have the impressive battles like the Crucis Lancers wholesale deployment to Tikinov, Lyran Guards Tradition of posting Battlemechs at the throne of the Archon, or Cappelan Warrior House Orders.

3) Unlike most Battletech Products, the Star League era is a time of relative peace, the SLDF just is not doing anything.

what i am seeing is that they are describing the Divisions not the individual componets, that said the real gem is in the opening where they descibe the Armored Divisions and them not being apart of the Regular Army.

Quote
The SLDF operates four types of named divisions. Other divisional formations may be
assembled at need, such as armored divisions, but are not kept as part of the standing
Regular Army. This somewhat misleading, of course. The 322nd Armored Division, for
example, has been stood-up for over seventy years, funded through the SLDF’s discretionary
budget at the direction of the commanding general. It does not appear on standard SLDF
orders of battle, because it doesn’t fall into the normal corps chain of command.

Each division is typically assigned a full regiment of combined tube and missile
artillery, while independent regiments can claim up to a battalion of artillery depending
on assignment./quote]

The implication is that the SLDF had a whole host of divisions under army-level command and administrated by Reserve Command and Regular Army Commands. The text for Reserve command talks about both armored and infantry divisions used to garrison core member state worlds, and the blurb on armor assets talks about the "unassigned defensive Regular Army". I actually plan to post a question about this on the official board because the FM is very confusing about these various distinctions.

But yeah, the SLDF had access to huge numbers of higher level conventional commands that were never put on normal orders of battle. I have no idea if that ties into the 50 divisions that were not
described in the text for the corps.

Could also be a neat way of expanding the total amount of hardware in the universe without providing a definitive number.

I am enjoying what I read, but am finding it a bit dry.  Must have been one hell of a slog for the writers.

I tend to agree.

The cover art is based on "Kerensky's Flight", p. 81 of the SLSB.

And I have the patience of a Ghost Bear. Like both of them I strike like lightning when I have decided to do so.

Ha Ha That is a good one Wolfcannon. It is only natural that superior clans such as ours make such comments . We bob and weave, jab and feint because our brother clans are not on our level of talent and skill or speed. We are the ELITE of the ELITE. We are what our GREAT FOUNDER Nicholas Kerensky intended when he forged the clans. None of the other clans can match us.

Considering the subject matter, I don't think any of the other clans want to match you.  ;D
