I agree with Master Arminas; the whole campaign was just a plot device for the overall story arch.  If the SLN, SLDF, and TH are not totally devastated then there is no collapse of the SL and then no Exodus.  And Alexander was a great strategist just like Nicholas was sane (or not suffering from the final stages of syphilis) when he created the Clans. ::)

I consider Kerensky's abilities as a commander to be entirely an informed ability; he never demonstrates, to my mind, any hint of either tactical or strategic ability.

I'm starting to wonder if Kerensky's fame is more along the lines of Eisenhower- not necessarily a skill tactician, but very talented at handling large organizations composed of personnel from multiple nations.

I'm also starting to wonder how the 1st SW would have turned out if one of the SW states had access to a Nimitz or King.  Fighting the 1st SW using the WW2 Pacific campaign Island Hopping strategy could actually result in someone winning the 1st SW.

Umm...spot on. This is a fictional universe. Every decision is a plot device for the overall story arch. Divining is a waste of time. Hypothesizing in-character or within the fiction can be fun, but applying real-world rational or historical context is moot.
