Good Lord.....
« on: February 25, 2010, 08:47:03 PM »

.....I didn't really understand the impact of this slide until I read the legend carefully -- my reaction is two-fold: a) You're not already doing these things? ??? and b) WTF happened in the last 20 years?! >:( I mean, I know that I've been out of the loop for a while, but even as a box-kicker in an avowed support unit, I knew how to do virtually all of these things to the satisfaction of Marine Corps combat veterans.....

Two things:
1. is this for FNG or for seasoned soldiers?
2. quality is decreasing (an old problem).

Yikes not a good sign. Perhaps proper training was neglected during the recent wars in favor of toss em in and see if they survive.

As I read the slide, it is for post-Basic/Advanced Infantry students, since they are using "feedback from theater"...I'm totally mystified on this, as the slide says it was written in 2006 - after two years of *ss-busting combat in everything from hills and farmlands, to urban areas...And yes, if this is written as it appears, they do seem to be talking about deleting Call for Fire by Voice training - but replaced with what? Email? Are they limiting fire calls to NCOs/dedicated FO's? If so, that bodes very ill...

Other things I wonder about:

*"Perform Tactical Combat Casualty Care" - Ya' think?

*"Perform field sanitation and preventative medicine field craft" - They weren't before?

*"Prepare a vehicle in a convoy" - ...Ummmmm.....Really?

There's just no good way to read this: if it's an actual training slide, something is drastically wrong with the Army; if it's simply loaded with errors, someone needs to be sent back to PowerPoint School, or face demotion; if it's a joke/gag slide, it's in extremely poor taste, and isn't even very funny...

...I'm not even really sure how to integrate this for SD/SC, as I'm not sure even Liao would be that stupid.....

...I'm glad I'm out -- and yeah, I worry that my wife's cousin is going to get sent to Afghanistan: he made it out of Mosul without a scratch (convoy escort), and is now newly married and stationed in Hawaii....

No, they're doing that now:

"Recruits need to learn how to use their hands, the St. Louis native said. "A greater majority of recruits have never been in a fistfight," he added." - Wow...The Marine Corps noted this problem several years ago, and developed the MCMAP fighting style in response.

Wow.

Less computer learning more combat learning.

And being able to do most things is the trademark of an infantry soldier.
What will they do if they have to defend a position with mines? or fire MG at incoming hostile?

Ask them to wait because they need the specialists to get there?  ;)

I suspect that what is going on is they are trying to increase the utility of basic troops.

For example, a GI wouldn't be trained in personal recovery operations because their job was to fight.  They may be sent to recover personal of course, but they weren't trained specifically for that.  They were more concerned with killing the other guy and then could pick the pieces of their units up after.

Or medical care would be provided by a Medic rather than a GI.  Yes some GI's would know first aid, but wouldn't be trained to deal with the types of things a Medic could.

It looks like a lot of these jobs are being taken from other areas and being taught to troops as well and I expect this is a result of our increasing experience with asymmetric warfare.  I.E. you cannot just count on the Medic to provide medical care for fallen troops because enemy snipers specifically target the medics first (along with officers and people carrying heavy weapons).  Thus it becomes more important that your general troops be able to handle more tasks.

True but "basic" ones?

@Kit:

The problem is that there are never enough specialists to go around - for example, there might be one medic to 30 people, if that. Combat is not simple, nor is it clean and straightforward - if it ever is, you're in an ambush.

These are basic drills that ever person on the ground, in uniform and carrying a weapon, needs to know by heart. These are the "little things" that make small units efficient, and if they are efficient, that usually translates upwards to the larger units. That is what wins battles.

In effect, the Army is trying very hard to do everything possible to ram cannon-fodder into the theater. I know that sounds harsh, but I have Patton on, my side: [paraphrasing] "The more you sweat in training the less you bleed in combat" and "No one ever drowned in sweat".....I recall reading a brief back in the 80's that stated Soviet conscripts got to fire a mere 60 rounds of live ammunition in their entire 3-4 year stint - I shot that in one firing day out of 5 hooting days during the KD course, and probably three times that on the Quick Kill course, as well as uncounted rounds on machinegun ranges and in demo's...and  was in a support unit -- the more live rounds you fire, the better you get - simulators don't cut it.

And the classical: hard training, easy fights. Easy training, hard fights.

... This explains SO much, Hammer. I'm ex Army, and officer, and I got out in 98, offically.  Even then, I was noting some trends outside the Rangers and Airborne groups that bothered me....

but, jeeze.  I think I know what's going on. They're shuffling basically fresh from AIT into combat line units, in theater, and finding out what we from the 80's and early 90's could have told 'em.  Every single one of _my_ men when I was being beat around the head with an 2x4, or leading Alpha 2/75th, could do all that, and more.

*shakes head* So so so glad I'm out.  But, an lot of it is, the Slick willy years gutted the Pattons, and put the McClellans in... gahhhh.

@MageOhki -- Please don't think I'm beating up on the Army, but I remember the "Time Out" cards my friends at Fort Hood were telling me about in '98, and how the Sgt's were deliriously happy that they weren't allowed in Korea.

I said I had noted some trends....  To be fair, Ice, I didn't have much to do outside the leg infantry or um... yeah, my minor.   So, I don't know (I heard it, but at the time I didn't bother to verify it) about the time out cards.  So, no, no idea if it's true. Wouldn't suprise me though.
