Molecular Beam
« on: September 17, 2013, 02:48:34 AM »

  Remember the Shadows...

Molecular Beam (MB)

Game Statistics:

Technology Base: Clan
Tonnage: 10
Critical: 4
Heat: 25
Damage: 5 (special- see below)
Range: Short: 1-6/ Medium: 7-14/ Long:15-20
Cost: 500,000 C-Bills
Battle Value (BV): 600

Game Notes:

The Molecular Beam (MB) is an energy weapon and follows all rules from Total Warfare unless otherwise noted. Except for Laser Reflective, Hardened and Capital Scale Armor, shots from a MB completely ignore armor and their effects. Against Laser Reflective, Hardened and Capital Scale Armor, the shot does full damage against the armor and ignores any other effects of the armor but does not automatically penetrate to the internal structure like normal.

yeah... cause this would not be completely broken in the ground game.  granted the extreme heat would work wonder, but being able to deploy a Star of Pack Hunters with this puppy would still make people cry.

Other things to add

1) this unit requires a nuclear engine to operate

2) there should be a to hit roll to see if it does penetrate armor, modified by range (basically the closer you are the more likely you melt the bones)

3) Ammo Explosion on a Critical hit ala Improved Heavies, deals 30 points (5 more then the heat, reflecting the massive amounts of energy involved)

4) Can NOT be used in Strafing attacks by aerospace fighters

I'm not sure. I could see this deployed in Fuel Cell vehicles. You'd just have to create a shot-to-fuel point rule. Which could be fun since a fuel cell tank might have to decide between firing this weapon or moving...

my inspiration is the heavy gauss rifle, and it is also meant to PREVENT mass vehicle usage.  otherwise we have another ungodly savannah master swarm tactic on our hands.

In the canon universe, no major House or Clan can or would, equip every single vehicle at their disposal with a particular weapon or piece of equipment. The strength of vehicles is with ammunition weapons, not high heat energy weapons. Even under the most ideal conditions of using one on a fusion powered vehicle, a single Molecular Beam (MB) weighs 25 tons (with 10 for the weapon and 15 for the heat sinks, assuming none of them have already been used). If you try and mount additional MBs, then each one will weigh 35 tons.
