Help me start a couple of units, please?
« on: February 22, 2013, 09:16:32 PM »

Hi All,

I'm still kind of a novice 'Techer, but I love painting minis so I'm planning a couple of units. One will be a Clan Wolf Heavy/Assault Star, and the other will be a Dark Age IS Medium Lance.

For my Wolves, I have:
2 Timber Wolves
1 Night Wolf
1 Mad Cat MK II

I'm thinking of ordering a Savage Wolf to fill it out, and paint it tan above, grey below like the CSO scheme for Beta Galaxy.

For the DA IS Lance:
1 Hunchback
1 DA1 Hatchetman
1 Black Hawk Ku
1 Black Hawk Standard/2

What do Y'all think? Is there a cool House unit scheme appropriate to these 4? Any and all advice is appreciated! :)

for the WOlf Star, get yourself a Highlander IIC, Blood Reaper, Tundra Wolf and/or transfer one of those standard Black Hawks over.

for the inner sphere lance I would reccomend Republic of the Sphere, Which uses White, Red, or Black with gold as a paint scheme (depending on if you want thier Green, Veteran, or Elite units.)

OK, cool. My favorite mail order place does have a Highlander IIC but not the others you mentioned. I just realized, the Savage Wolf is Wolf Hunters, isn't it?

I was looking at RofS on CSO.  Obviously I need to buy FM:3085. Guess which FM Noble Knight just sold out of?  ;)

Thank you for the advice. I'm used to Army Lists and such. BT can be a little intimidating when it comes to building combat units.

Or a bliss since you have complete freedom to do whatever you want.

And Savage Wolf is not a Wolf Hunters design, it is a Sea Fox one that they sell to other factions.

the Savage Wolf accomplishes what Battletech Fans have pretty much wanted.  an excuse to get a Mad Cat (and from what I understand it is a Mad Cat that will be slightly more optimized) into the RATs of every faction.  that is why it is being manufactured extensivly by Clan Sea Fox.  they will be selling it to everyone with the express intnent of making it the dominant heavy battlemech in the inner sphere, akin to what the Marauder was in 3025.

general advice when it comes to building lances and stars... do what you want, what makes you curios, and don't let how you paint the mechs determine what you can and can not field in any particular game.

also keep in mind that the Wolf Hunters are a Mercenary unit, roughly battalion size.

their trick is that every member is expected to be extensively cross trained.  everyone is supposed to be a competent Mechwarrior, Battle Armor operator, Vehicle Crewman, and Infantryman.I do not know how VTOL and Aerospace Pilots are expected to perform.

Anastasia Kerensky even holds the Hunters to an amorphous command structure where team leaders are assigned before missions begin.

Yeah, the Wolf Hunters are kind of an interesting idea. I'll have to see more about them before I commit to painting them. I'm looking forwards to ER:3145, just to learn more about everybody.

Right now, I'm painting Stacy Church's Black Widows, from Starterbook Wolf and Blake. It was comforting to have an "army list" for them. 5 more to paint, then the decals I bought from FPG, and I'll be ready to show them.

I think because I literally haven't played since like 1991, I just don't know quite where to get started. I mostly buy minis that I like the looks of, then I feel spoiled for choice on how to organize them and paint them.

If you come from an army list background and are not familiar yet with BT's more free wheeling attitude to force construction, WorkTrolls Amry Books, though set in 3025 are an excellent start point.

I will always recommend The Foxes Teeth, Sorenson's Sabres, Guilleme's Wolfhounds (Starter Fist and Falcon), and The New Black Widows as great Inner Sphere Companies.  you have a collection of great mechs from all classes, many of the icons in one way shape or form, with different individual capabilities, and starkly different paint jobs.

Thanks, Guys. :)

Between the Starter book info and WT's Army Books, I've got plenty to keep me busy today! :)
