And just a single question (which is consistently ignored in the following) as for the 'why?' in the corresponding bg forum thread (at least over the first six pages, stopped bothering after that). Same old story over there...

The why is immaterial at this point, wouldn't you say?

If I had to guess, I'd say Herb decided to stop being the Battletech Developer because of burnout. I'm sure though, in time, the truth will come out. It always does. It may dribble out a little at a time but out it will come :)

Or in other words, sometimes a new face is needed to keep creativity and new things coming.

Amongst the many 'Why's

1: He only had a five-year contract and one or both parties chose not to renew.

2: He only wanted to do it for five years period

3: Burnt out on it all. Too much stress to get quality product out in a timely manner and having to deal with fanboys

4: Other possibilities I don't want nor care to fathom

I still wish Herb good luck in his other endeavors.   As a fan of Battletech since the early 90's.  I am happy how Herb has gotten products produced.  I still remember the 90's where I was not sure when the next book will be out.  I wish TPTB all the luck in choosing a new battletech developer!

He's not "gone," just not the Lead Developer anymore.

I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords.

Exactly, frankly if his stepping down was anything less then amicable I doubt he would have been facebooking Randall Bills while Mr Bills was going gaga at PAX

I've been rather pleased with Herb's handling of everything. Some people are crybabies. CGL brought me back into a universe I had thought dead. I didn't know it had survived FASA dying until CGL suddenly popped up. I've spent more on the game in the last five years than in the previous fifteen.

I third Ken Horner getting the top spot if Ben Rome defers. Both would make good Line Developers.

If Herb voluntarily stepping down wasn't due to burnout,  my next guess would be that he somehow ticked off someone at Topps and was forced to step down...

And that guess would be flat-out wrong.

What I think REALLY happened, is that the Catalyst powers that be discovered that OBT has in its possession and is about to host the long lost ORIGINAL ComStar Sourcebook.  Since then, the minions of Catalyst have been working to crash the site and have finally succeeded, with only Knightmare's desperate work holding this little forum together as the book was purged.

Herb’s apparent stepping down from the Line Developer position was in fact his final job as a BTecher, leading the bitter assault on OBT’s last database backups.  For his services, he has been raised to the Green, forever one of the lords of Catalyst and a member of the Inner Sanctum.

I really, REALLY have to stop sniffing glue...
