Well that was annoying.  I woke up today, looked to see if they reached the $30K goal so I could give my support.  They were at like $31K, woot, so I gave my $255.

Then went to shower, came back out, and my screen showed like $29.5K.  ARGH.  It got to $29,860 with a minute left, so since I could buy a lot of miniatures cheap, and I'm stupid with stuff like kickstarter/ebay, I went and doubled my order.

Then it jumped to $30,500 or so, then I went and dropped my order back down as I don't even play this game anymore.

But it finished with a bit over $30K, woot, I get 6 extra wasp/stinger miniatures!

But $255 for 9 miniatures, OUCH, that is $28 each.  They aren't made of gold or anything..... or are they? :)
It's not as much a case of we are buying the miniatures as we are just getting them as a thank you gift.  Assuming you are buying them through the kickstarter is just like treating a program beta as a demo; sure it can work that way, but it's not the point.

One thing I was wondering in the longer term is this; should this project serve as a means of helping to introduce IWM to the ins and outs of 3D modelling, could it act as a precedent for getting other miniatures done up in the same manner?

For example, could any pre-existing minis (such as the Timber Wolf or Savage Wolf) or future potential options (such as the various totem 'Mechs to be published in Technical Readout: 3145) be candidates for (re-)development in the new style?

Indeed, whatever the 3250 'Mechs may end up looking like, could it be an option for their minis to be drawn up from scratch with 3D modelling in mind?

That was what I was thinking.  Personally I am only marginally invested in the WOB LAMs, having already given blood sweat and tears to make the Star Leauge ones happen two years ago (which will be coming one way or another in the next year.)  but I view this as an oppourtunity for IWM to get into using 3D printing for mold making, and considering what will be happening tot he line in the not to distant future, this could if funded right and with the cost covered up front, provide a huge boost for IWM.  that is more why I throw my weight behind it.
That's where I am sitting as well, I am hoping this opens up the door for more CAD minis (to be honest, I've never particularly had plans to use the SL LAM minis when we were funding them, but I was going to buy minis anways, so I figured I would donate to the cause),  I put a few extra dollars in to meet those stretch goals, but I may actually sell some of the minis.

The timing on this kickstarter was aweful (Actually the whole management of the project was pretty poor; hopefully IWM learns from this)
We were actually almost to $32k but the person who funded the gen con/origins dinner pulled out last minute.  very annoying.

On a side note, I kind of wish all those posters were ala carte add ons rather than thrown in with existing awards; first of all, it would have helped raise a few more extra dollars, second, I don't really care about these posters, but I'm getting them anyways (sorry Mr Huda, my wall is already adorned with David White originals).

I'm still hoping I can put in a few hundred extra bucks and get some additional miniatures to my $255 bid.  I wasn't following this KS very close and didn't notice the updates till after I bid.  Not sure why, but I like buying miniatures by the battalion.

I have a battalion of unseen LAMs, and would like to have a battalion of the new ones.

But I do hope 3D printing catches on more, its getting there, and can't wait till I can buy one for my desktop and print my miniatures on demand, then throw them back into the melt-o-hopper when I'm done so they can be regenerated for the next game.  Guess IWM doesn't like that idea, but they could sell the mech CADs for like $50 :)

so far as I know Stephen Huda is the only artist who currently uses CAD software to create his pieces, as far as I know, and he does not do it that often if my eye is right (which it could not be)

I know that with the new model LAMs he used CAD software to create Mech designs that could actually fold into an aircraft shape as opposed to just handwaving it.

Congratulations to IWM for their success with the Kickstarter project; hopefully it will allow the groundwork to be laid for more 3D-modelled minis to be worked on in the future.

The major problem I'm have is that it is based on Huda's artwork. I'm not a big fan of his style.

I'm not a particular fan of Huda's style, but I think the LAMs actually work.
It's also good that they actually make sense,  I've seen more than a few transformers that seem structurally impossible.

THREADOMANCY GO!

I just got an update email about the kickstarter.  the Mech mode Pwwka is all but done, and they have the go ahead to get the other two modes, as well as the Yurei, Waneta, and Wasp.

the Stinger, Phoenix Hawk, and Shadow hawk LAMs are being Converted to a form the 3D printer can use now.

yes you read that right, the cost was low enough they could to the Two Hawks anyway.

Nice to see that the other two Mk1s have been added in!

For those who were able to afford chipping in to the KS, that is...

Here's hoping we won't have long to wait before some LAM rules get worked up for Alpha Strike. (Apparently there won't be any in the core rulebook, but it may be an option for one of the expansions.)

I figured they would do that, everyone was pushing it so much.

I'm going to have a lot of metal headed my way.  I get 1 of each spectral from the kickstarter, one of each SL from contributing to the fan funding then I pledged to buy doubles

Pushing wasn't the issue, I am sure they found that happy place where cost was low enough...  3D printing is still a new medium, so prices will vary wildly.

as an update to this, I had just received the survey for rewards distribution which means that they are getting ready to START production of the minis in general.  for my part I plan on purchasing some additional LAMs for the purpose of giving them away as listener prizes for Arbitration, so stay tuned.
