I have to say the Dark Ages don't really work for me. I tried to get into it but it just never worked for me.   Truthfully I've found Battletech less interesting from sometime in the early 3060s- I find the characters from the 3060s to be a bit simple for me and one sided.  I also feel that around the time Fanpro took over the setting became forced- rather then take what was already done and develop the story from that, the writers decided on the story they wanted to tell and forced the setting to fit it.  I've always had a hard time with the miraculous resurgence of the CapCon, the stupid pill that the TC swallowed, the dumb decisions made by Comstar with regard to the WOB (Terra doesn't matter-really?) and the set up for the FCCW.  For a while it felt like there was little effort to explain (in game) why any of these things happened (I mean the TC is going to join the 2nd SL and there is NO protesting?  Shraplen should have been lynch for even suggesting it).  Recently I think it has gotten better but at this point my interest in the canon setting has waned to the point that it really doesn't matter.

Hmm...

Guess I'm in the minority for loving all of BattleTech.

Not likely. Using any kind of forum (regardless of size) as somehow representative of the fan base is a drastic mistake. I haven't encountered a gaming company yet who doesn't go out of their way to mention that based off of sales, they have a substantially larger fan base that buys products and never interacts with their electronic mediums. It's pretty much a mistake to assume anything about the fan base, other than, they play a stompy robot game. As the gaming market ages, people have less time to play, let alone get online and argue with other people about how they should play (which is what a lot of forums, even this one at times*, devolves into). I'd wager a guess that this is one of the big reasons for the Total Warfare changes to the rulebooks, as well as CGL's "We're going to support all eras at various levels" approach. Throw product out to support varying play styles, more information in one product, and multiple eras...and that quiet majority is more likely to buy more product. It is also one of the likely reasons that the Dark Age wasn't thrown aside, and will inevitably get the CGL treatment. Whatever the status of the click game itself, there was definitely a market that bought products dealing with the era (be they novels or the click game). I would futilely hope that CGL would one day announce sales data on various products, similar to how Evil Hat Productions does so with their products, but that is never going to happen. Then perhaps, the blind (often, but not always, due to lack of knowledge or pulling together talking points based off gross over-exaggeration) hatred of any specific era would have some numbers to add to the discussion**. That will never, ever happen though. I'll still keep hoping.

*Noticeably less than others.

**I would fall under the talking points group when it comes to the 3rd Succession War era. I enjoy the full run of Battletech, but I cannot bring myself to move past the awful tropes and terrible stereotypes that are found in its beginnings and develop any real love for the era. I'll play a dark game with very adult themes and characters any day of the week, but when you start mixing the terrible parts of humanity into your base game design and philosophy, you lose me.

I am not so sure about that, Knightmare. I too like all periods including the Dark Age.

My personal favorite eras though are
- the Clan Invasion, because the Clans themselves(and their Tech, especially OmniMechs and Battle Armor) were
  introduced and WarShips (re-)introduced.
- the Jihad, partly because of all the new toys that were introduced during this period(e.g. Sub-Capital Weaponry)

if you had asked me at the start of the Jihad - "do you like all eras of BattleTech?"  I'd have said no - we've had a falling out and I won't play beyond the Civil War or will play solely in an AU.

As the Jihad and DA timelines matured I came around to them much for the new Tech in the Jihad and the characters in the DA.  So now I'd says I like all the eras but for different reasons.  Only era I don't really play now is the Succession Wars mainly due to the lack of special toys and the fragile machines - games are too short

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

So, you ERA-THAT-SHALL-NOT-BE-NAMED lovers are a legion now?  Then let me introduce you to a certain German forest. ;D

Snow Angels! Sweet!

I love the Jihad. It's a fantastic era for combining all of the new tech toys with WarShip battles. What more could you want?

New tech toys?  What's new about duct taping a chainsaw to a lawn mower?  If I want to run around with CrapTech (patent pending, all rights reserved) just go back to the 3rd Succession War.

Yes, because chainsaws are the only new tech that showed up in the Jihad.  ::)

I get not liking it. I don't get not liking it for reasons that don't even exist, like confusing Dark Age IndustrialMechs with the rather impressive array of new weapons that showed up during the Jihad. (Or became more commonly produced/used during the Jihad). I also don't understand why in the world you would want to aggressively mock fans of the material and encourage an "us vs them" mentality in an already niche community (which is exactly what happens when throwing phrases like CrapTech around the gaming table or forum).

I called Clan fans Clammers for the better part of a decade. Right up until I had a GM sit me down and run one of the best RPG-influenced campaigns I've had the pleasure of gaming in. And right up until I watched a young kid who had bought his first Battletech mini run out of a store crying, never to return, because he overheard a group of older fans and myself picking apart how silly the Clans were. I found out later that the kid was somebody who had just moved onto my then-current street and his parents told me that he broke the mini on the way home. He was 10, at best. The lightbulb went on, and I haven't looked back since. There's no added value in tossing pejoratives at the material (or more specifically, indirectly tossing them at the fans). There is a measurable negative value in doing so, though. There's nothing wrong with not using the material, not liking it, or even getting into a solid debate with reasoned answers as to why you dislike it. That encourages a healthy atmosphere of discussion among the fans of different material. The more "Craptech" or "Dork Age" talk that gets put out there, the more we see this community get more exclusionary. Elitism doesn't seem to have a great track record of keeping a game line healthy.

maybe a couple more of those WarShips surviving (or at least their construction facilities)

Variable Speed Pulse Lasers, Battle armor Scale LB-X Autocannons, Battle Armor Tube Artillery, Sub Capital Weapons bridging the gap between Captial and Conventional, Pocket Warships, Vehicular Direct Neural Interfaces, and some of the best designed Mechs, Tanks, and Battle armor since TRO 3055?

I get it, you don't like the Dark age or the Jihad that bore it.  but your language and derogatory nature do not benefit Battletech as a game, nor the fans who play it.  you establish yourself as an orthodoxy for whom all must come before.  a while back I posted a true story about a guy who flipped his shit when I showed him a reseen rifleman.  do you want to be that guy?  cause you are acting like it.

Okay, I've obviously touched a nerve.  I shall now remove the forceps from the subject's central nervous system (or is that a subprocessor?) and leave the nurses to close up.  But I'm keeping the term CrapTech; it describes the OS missile systems ("You mean I get to carry around almost all the weight of a standard missile system and I only get to use it once?  What's not to love?") and proto-Mechs ("All the draw backs of a Mech and none of the benefits of battle armor?  How could that be a technological, or playability, dead end?") too well.  Also read through my posts, any of my posts, and find one that can be taken seriously.  I don't take myself seriously, so why should anyone else?  Maybe I need to use more emoticons.
