Mad Cat Mk IV: Betrayal of Legacy or the next logical step?
« on: April 09, 2013, 10:25:54 AM »

So TRO 3145 Mercenaries came out, and in there where the two MK IV Omnis, the Mad Cat and Vulture.

My Co Hosts and I were looking at the Mad Cat and scratching our heads.  the Critical Hits layout is brilliant as far as the armor and the endo steel are concerned, and the 15 double heat sinks are pretty much standard for a 375 rated engine.  what took us all aback was the use of the XXL engine.

for Me the XXL was odd, but sort of a logical conclusion.  the Mad Cat when it was originally created maximized the use of weight savings technology, incorporating Endo Steel, Ferro Fibrous Armor, Double Heat Sinks and an XL engine.  it maximized speed, armor protection, and integral heat capabilities with the base chassis in one go as a result.

The XXL engine on the Mk IV struck me as the next logical step.  While the engine runs warmer then standard, and is more vunerable to Critical hits then an Inner Sphere XL, the payload capabilities are so much greater, to the point that we finally got an even number of pod space on the tonnage, and it made more sense to upgrade the armor to Ferro Lammeror.  this near maximized point protection means that the new Mad Cat can take ROUGHLY about 18% more damage to the plate then the original potentially more if Cluster rolls for Missile weapons go bad.

High Test, was not pleased however.  The Extra Heat from merely existing, followed up by the fragility of the engine itself made it a deal breaker for him, despite the armored Gyroscope and the fancy armor.  He does however like the tournament legal "PR" configurations though.

what do you all think?

Me personally I prefer the Vulture IV over the Mad Cat IV the Vulture makes use of new items without wasting survivability with the XXL to me to Mad Cat is trying too hard to be as scary as the original which in many ways I guess is a good thing as it shows just how competitive the BattleTech battlefield has become

In 3050 the Timber Wolf was a terror leading the vanguard of Clan assaults

In 3135 it's a Mech that's to be sold and bartered to the highest bidder

If honest I'd love to see what if anything they've done with the true Timber Wolf or Dire Wolf

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

I always felt the Mad Cat was a Noob Trap.  I can not tell you how many experienced players I have seen who have played to aggressive and shut down, slowed down or hailed the Mayan God King Ammogoboom.  while the Mk IV packs the same firepower as the original, the tougher armor offsets the vulnerability.  long and short a Mk IV should be able to outlast a standard Timber Wolf by at least a few rounds.

Not much you can really do with the Dire Wolf, it is optimized for Maximum space and pod tonnage.  you try to use Ferro Lam, you cut down on overall tonnage and space., Endo Composite likewise is cutting down on tonnage while increasing space.

Arguably a refit to Radical Heat sinks might be worthwhile, but we do nto have construction rules.

I agree the Vulture Mk IV, despite having a slightly lower Pod Space amount is a little more well rounded.

After looking at them both I must admit Mechs like Hellbringer and Summoner are begging for Mk IV treatment

If it wasn't for the XXL engine, I would adore this design.  As is, all you get for those extra crits and C-bills is a half-ton more pod space than the original.  The armour change on the other hand, I support fully.  Using Ferro-Lamellor more than makes up for the lost crit space, in my opinion, as it essentially eliminates LRMs and LB-x cluster munitions as a battlefield factor and reduces the capabilities of other weapons.  Armoured Gyro just makes it even harder to kill, which you desperately need with all those potential engine critical hits.

Armouring the engine may have been a better idea - heavier but still, personally I'd have kept the XL switched the armour and armoured the Gyro that would have been enough flavour without the XXL

looking at the RATs we see there is a Thor II coming down the pipeline as well, the loki can be upgraded well simply through the application of Ferro Fibrous armor and a cutting down of the Pod space to...lets say 25 tons even.

Thor II should be Summoner sounds so much better

I'm going to put money on wings included in that one keeping with the growing Jade Falcon fascination with wings

I adore the design because of the XXL engine. The Clans have always been go big or go home, and that's where I feel they work best. It's easy to optimize with Clantech. It's a whole lot harder to get something with some flair. This has flair, and it plays well to the bravado that makes up an important part of the Clan military culture.

I am not wholly convinced about the XXL engine, but that may be my limited experience with it.  I don't take that much issue with the slight loss of survivability, since on non-zombie designs, once the torso is breached, I consider the mech done for the day in most circumstances, and try to pull back, and situations where a mech with a Clan XLFE or IS LFE would survive where a larger engine would not seem like edge cases.  I am not so sure if the weight and heat is worth it, though, especially when you consider that the extra heat will occupy 2 tons worth of DHS (assuming run as the default movement mode).  Also, given the extra vulnerability of that engine, I question what good the armored gyro does.

As for Ferro-lamellar, put that on everything, the weight loss is a bit of a hit, but with smaller ES and XLFEs as well as generally smaller equipment, clan mechs can take the space loss generally, and the added survivability is really nice.  Also each armor point is at least worth 1.2 armor points of other armors, so it's not not as much of a weight loss as you might think, and like hardened, actually lets you pack a bit more survivability on if you want to max out your armor weight.

The New vulture seems reasonable, though.

If anything, really; what I want to see is redone IS Omnis.  The clans have been getting new omnis that are fairly decent for a while, but the beyond the totem omnis and Celestials, the IS doesn't have too many actually good omnis.  I am hoping to see the Celestials get the same treatment the Bolla got: a RotS version, has standard C3 and slightly tweaks the pod layouts for IS combat doctrines, but otherwise just as capable, and I want to see stuff like an Owens II to give me a scout omni that is actually dangerous.

When are you clanners going to realize our names for your toys are just plain superior?  8D

But in all aspects, all of this stuff is too new for me.  Get much past 3060 ish and I am way too far behind to make it worthwhile.  I'm not so oldschool that I can't adapt, I just haven't read anything since...TRO 3070? or so?  I don't know, some of this tech just makes my head spin from my early-esque tech standpoint.
