Merc Unit Challenge (AU Timeline)
« on: May 05, 2014, 01:09:31 AM »

I've posted this on the BattleTech forum as well.  I'm beginning to notice I keep relying on the same merc units a lot in my AU and I want to change it up a bit bring some new life to the mercenary trade.

Problem is I'm really terrible with names.

So if anyone fancies shooting up a merc unit or has one of their own they'd like to submit for entry into my AU I'd welcome them.

Basics are

Unit Name
Commander/Significant Officers
Forces Available
Home planet/origin

If anyone wants any info on the AU that could inform their choices please ask.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Unit Name: Van Halen's Heavy Cavalry
Commander/Significant Officers: Colonel Alex van Halen (Lyran Guards veteran, expert trainer and administrator (Highlander IIC)), Lieutenant Colonel Ninyu Hrolfsen (Kungsarme veteran, expert tactican (custom Banshee))
Forces Available: Starting with a single Mech lance in 3054 the Heavy Cavalry reached a peak of a reinforced Mech Battalions, an Armour Battalion and an Artillery Battalion in 3060, before the loss of an Excalibur-class dropship cost more than half the unit their lives and equipment. Since then they've operated as two combined arms battalions. Most of their 'Mechs are assault weight and they have a high degree of clan gear as well as a substantial artillery force.
Home Planet/Origin: Formed on Galatea by Clan Invasion veterans, the Heavy Cavalry largely had chips on their shoulders and wanted to take the fight to the Clans. Although generally successful in this, their shock tactics have led to heavy attrition.

Two excellent submissions thanks I can find a place for both of them although I'll play a bit with their back stories I appreciate it.

All ideas are welcome darkensis, Abele feel free to submit more if you fancy there's not upper limit on the mercenary trade

I think I can work with that although I'd prefer slimming it down to a combined-arms Brigade 1 Mech Reg, 1 Armour Reg, 1 Infantry/Battle Armour Reg, 1 Aerospace Wing and give them transport of their own to make them more mobile.

Unit Name: Apache Wing
Commander/Significant Officers: Major Victoria McCauley, nicknamed Major Victory
Forces Available: 4 squadrons of Yellowjacket vtols, 4 squadrons of Cavalry vtols, 1 Seeker dropship
Home Planet/Origin: Formerly part of the planetary militia of Graham IV, Major (then Captain) McCauley led those members of the aviation wing loyal to the Federated Commonwealth off-world, expecting to join a relief force to retake their homeworld. When the AFFC failed to mount such an expedition, the unit instead made for Outreach and registered as mercenaries.

I think I can use them but will likely cut down the Battle Armour force to a Battalion.

Given that Graham IV is protected by the SLDF and the AFFC is thankfully a distant memory I'll change their place of origin to Milos - make them former St Ives Compact forces who become mercs when the AFFS refuse to push onto the world and St Ives is unable.

Thanks both for the suggestions

Name: 1st Pathfinder Battalion aka “The Drop Bears”

Commander/Significant Officers:
Leutnant-Colonel John “Jumper” Argive: Born on Australia in the family of one of the top directors of the Commonwealth's Mint and Reserve Bank located on the planet, John Argive was just a spoiled child only interested in two things: rugby and parachute.
When he was given a BCD from the Lyran Alliance Armed Forces (ie punching an officer that wanted to prevent him from doing a parachute jump from a Dropship); his father, unwilling to see him stay at home in a “dishonourable” way (some badmouthed people say he was more afraid of the kind of people that John was dealing with and of the soon to come background check), invested their family money and offered John a deal: take this money to make something useful or be sent for a permanent stay in the space facilities of the family.
Taking the offer, John Argive decided to get back to the military by the door he had been kicked out, jumping from a Dropship.
Even now a few years after forming his unit, he is still a daredevil and willing to take any risks to have fun or do his missions.

Kommandant Moses “Stacker” Coppersmith: Pretending to come from the planet of Florida in the Lyran Commonwealth, Moses Coppersmith is an enigma even for his comrades as his accent is obviously from Glasgow in the Capellan Confederation and although he never speaks about it, he was well-connected enough to the Federated Suns to give the unit access to brand new Vampires dropships from Jalastar Aerospace and to a platoon worth of “Puma” Battle Armours. When asked how he did it, he answers that he is close enough to the “powers that be” to get access to anything.
Even why he decided to join “the Drop Bears” is strange as he just seemed to appear on Australia when the unit was formed.

Forces available:
The 1st Pathfinder Battalion is a combined-arms unit made of 4 understrength companies and specialising in combat drops or more usually in dropping ahead of the main invading forces to mark and hold drop and land zones.
Their nickname was given to them during one of their first missions by the security forces protecting the Commonwealth's Mint and Reserve Bank when the 1st Pathfinder Battalion made a really High Altitude-Low Opening jump to surprise the defending forces that had moved to face another threat during this training operation and to “drop on their head from above”.

The core of the battalion is formed by two Airborne Companies (Tonga and Market) made of 2 HALO Paratroopers Platoons supported by a Flight of Lucifers.
The remaining companies are one Air Assault Company (Mikado) with one Lance of Battle Hawks, one Platoon of Infiltrator MkII, a Flight of Lucifers and one Air Support Company (Musketeer) with 2 Lances of Dervishes supported by a Flight of Lucifers.
Thanks to both John's money and Moses' contacts, the unit has access to a full support staff and a small flotilla of DropShips with 1 Union, 1 Leopard CV and 6 Vampires (with only the Vampires being new) allowing it to move at once on a target or on several at the same time.

Home planet:
Almost all the Pathfinders come from the Lran Alliance and most of them from the Protectorate of Donegal.
The only thing they all have in common is their expertise in parachuting, something that John Argive thinks is necessary due to the speciality of his units and tests every new recruits with a HALO drop from one of the Vampires.

Name: The Exeter Division
Commander/Significant Officers: Sho-Sho Robert Duchairn is a smooth-talking, fast-shooting financial whiz-kid who actually graduated from Blackjack School of Conflict's infantry course before being forced to exit the LCAF over financial 'irregularites'. Having ascended the ladder, Duchairn commanded all three of the Division's infantry regiments, punctuated by semi-retirement as an infantry instructor following his marriage, and six months in the Division's penal company (4th Company, 4th Regiment) following more financial irregularities.
Tai-sa Alissandra McGwire is a genuine DCMS-trained mechwarrior. In fact she graduated Sun-Zhang, a rare feat for a woman, only to defect from the Rasalhague Regulars to the Kungsarme two years later. 'Alimony' McGwire retired along with her DRG-1N Dragon in 3047 and went mercenary for more advancement (and hopefully more of a pay-packet to support her estranged husband and two children). The Exeter Division snapped her up as a lance commander on their way back to DCMS employ in 3052 and she's since risen to command their 'Mech regiment.
Forces Available: Somewhat eccentrically, the Exeter Division operate a base-5 organisation, with five regiments of 5 companies each, of 5 lances each, of 5 Mechs, tanks or infantry squads each. At full strength they operate at one BattleMech regiment, one Armour regiment (including a company of Thumper artillery tanks) and three regiments of infantry - they generally operate at 80-90% of this. They haven't managed to maintain an aerospace contingent since the Second Succession War and currently operate a pair of aero-lances more on the basis of having bought up the pilots' debts than any commitment by said pilots to the Division.
Home planet: Formed on Exeter in the Draconis March during the First Succession War by adherents to the (at the time apparently) all-conquering Draconis Combine, the Exeter Division haven't returned to their world of origin except on raids since 2798. For much of the following two centuries they were in continuing employ by the DCMS against the AFFS and they're holding an institutional grudge against the Wolf Dragoons and Kell Hounds for spoiling this tidy arrangement back in the Fourth Succession War. Not that they let that get in the way of doing business and the Exeters were hired on by Duncan Marik during the Andurien War. Having spent most of the 3040s struggling to stay afloat, the Exeters survived on short-term Capellan contracts and a discreet retainer from the ISF until the Clan Invasion when Theodore Kurita signed them back up.

Name:  Sirens of Endyimon

Commander / Significant Officers:  Colonel Serenity (III) Chiba is a surprising petite woman who now commands her unit from the decks of the units flagship, the Titan-C Dropship Usagi.   A former Jagatai pilot, Serenity was able to walk away from her last landing after shooting down opposing Word of Blake ASF during a raid three years ago.   Sharp on the draw, and quick of wit Serenity has a strong following in her family owned and operated mercenary unit.  Infamous for her preferred hair style Serenity can and has held duels over insults to it.

Lt Colonel Hotaru Tomeo is perhaps one of the most heavily cyborged individuals not working for the Word of Blake, a legacy of an incident in her childhood Hotaru doesn't talk much about her childhood in the Ghost Bear Dominion, instead maintaining a sharp focus on her duties as the head of the marine forces guarding the units Dropships from boarders and on the ground.

Forces Available

A surprisingly powerful Aerospace Regiment the Sirens currently field 80 ASF based from the Titan C Usagi, the Vengeance CV Luna, and a Titan C (PWS) Glaive.  Both Titans were salvage from Serenity II's conflicts with Clan Smoke Jaguar, and in current era Serenity III decided to upgrade one Titan to the PWS configuration, since given losses all three droppers had empty bays.

Accompanying the Regiment is regiment of Marines, who maintain nearly a Trinary of BA (mostly Elementals), again salvage form the Clan Invasion.

Home Planet / Origin  One of the many SLDF Forces who turned Mercenary after the fall of the Star League the Sirens are in fact named after mythological figures of Ancient Greece.   Held by a long line of maternal ASF Pilots (technically Serenity is the 5th Colonel of her name to own the Regiment), a cagey ability to avoid the worst meat grinders and astute investments have kept the Regiment afloat.

More importantly the Sirens are infamous for their choice of uniforms. Mini skirts, high heels and a tight armored top with decorative ribbons its distinctive, attractive and an effective form of advertising.
