My introduction & PbP campaign
« on: August 15, 2011, 07:12:07 PM »

Hello. I just stumbled on this site via a Google search, and it's great to find a good Battletech site which is this active.

I played Battletech 16-ish years ago. It has been a while, but I recently went to GenCon, which left me jonesing for some more Batteltech action.

So I am trying to start up a campaign, similar to one I played many years ago. This will be a PbP. The whole campaign will take place on a AU version of a single peripheral planet (Rockwellawan). There will be some Role Playing between battles, but the main focus will be the combat and how the outcome of each battle shapes the war. Its going to take place around 3050 (just because that's the era I know best).

I have created a site for this, which I will not link to from here out of respect for this site's owners (if someone tells me this is kosher, I'll add it later). But I am looking for players, so wanted to see if there was anyone here interested in playing.

My original vision was that players would post their turns via the forum, and the GM (me) would resolve the combat via MegaMek and post the results (including an updated battle field image) for the players. But after observing the PbP match between Ice Hellion and RavensPsi, I'm contemplating using a similar style to what they are doing (but using invisiblecastle.com as Klinktastic suggested). This might progress faster. I might play with both methods to see which works better.

In fact I am wandering if this site might be a better place to host my campaign? Does anyone have any suggestion on that?

Anyhow, I am exited to have found this site, and would love to play a PbP battle against someone like  Ice Hellion and RavensPsi are doing if anyone is interested.

Nice to see new members.  PM Knightmare about link and sites etc. as he is the site guru of all things technical.

+1, even if I haven't heard from him for some days/weeks by now.

Hi RavensPsi,
Sure, the level of RP would be somewhat left to each player and their comfort level and play style.

An example might be that a player's character is a Mechwarrior commanding a lance (there are currently 3 factions players can choose to be in, but more will likely be added later as the story unfolds). Their unit is given a mission to attack and hold a bridge, but the player thinks there might be an ambush. The dialog they have with there CO might be "played out" via the forums. The results of this dialog could impact the mission parameters.

Another example might be that a character has insider information about their faction (each faction has a few secrets beyond simply their current locations and war strategy) - the player can choose to defect to another faction. This discussion may not be "played out" like the above scenario ( though there is that potential) but this character's discussion would certainly effect the faction's next moves, or even the outcome of the war. And of course this would impact how the world interacts with that player (it will be hard to gain the trust of their new faction).

Like I said this is based on a campaign I played in a long time ago, and I really enjoyed the ability to get creative and interact with the world around me. So even though the focus is still on the battles themselves, the RP between battles can effect the parameters and goals of those missions, or might simply add flavor to the encounters for an added dimension to combat.

I like the concept.

And I am also busy trying to bring RavensPsi's atrocities (aka Word of Blake :P) back to where they belong.  ;D

I have a few other questions. Will combat be Battletech or Battleforce? Is combat run similar to how Ice and I are running it, or is it a double blind type combat? How close to 'histroy' are you going to play? I asked because if I decided to play I would like to field my own clan galaxy, if that would be acceptable.

Q: Will combat be Battletech or Battleforce?
A: Battletech

Q: Is combat run similar to how Ice and I are running it, or is it a double blind type combat?
A: Not sure what blind-combat type is. But my original vision was that players would post their turns via the forum, and the GM (me) would resolve the each phases via MegaMek and post the results (including an updated battle field image) for the players. But after observing the PbP match between you and Ice Hellion, I'm contemplating using a similar style to what you are doing (but using invisiblecastle.com as Klinktastic suggested). This might progress faster. I'll probably play with both methods to see which works better.

Q: How close to 'histroy' are you going to play?
A: Not very. I would not call it an AU per se, but I will not be concerned about the canon history. However the entire campaign will take place on a single peripheral planet, so there should not be many conflicts.

Q: I asked because if I decided to play I would like to field my own clan galaxy, if that would be acceptable.
A: Well, the year is 3050 and the planet is Rockwellawan, which is on the opposite side of the known universe from where the the clans just recently started their invasion. So even though I don't plan on following cannon to the letter and I want to allow plenty of freedom for the players, the clan being involved might be a bit of a stretch.

In fact the people of  Rockwellawan know of the invasion, but its not something they consider to really effect them – its just an interesting story on the news. The war unfolding on their back door is far more concerning to them. Most of the Mechs will be pre-3050 design initially since the  Rockwellawan factions often have to live on the hand-me-downs of the inner sphere. But as the campaign evolves and the story unfolds there will likely be some 3050+ technology getting rolled in.

Not sure what blind-combat type is.

Just that the players don't know the position of their opponents unless they have a line of sight.
