My problem with the way they make LAM'S

Hi I just got my greedy little paws on the book Jihad: Final Reckoning and while I was reading it I went to the section on Lam's and I was greatly disturbed by the fact that they can not use lighter engines,structures, or armor also they cannot use modular technology.While it seems they can use clan double heat sinks and clan made weapons they are being shortchanged in other vital areas.

LAMs using that tech would be pretty ridiculous. Additionally, it gives a solid game rules reason for why LAMs failed.

...Its hard to justify one way or another.  Frankly, I think TPTB are just trying to shoehorn the 3085-universe into the Dark Age, to account for the facts.

Well... I was surprised to see that while the Spectral LAM conversion equipment takes up mass(10 % of the Spectral LAM's mass) it isn't shown on the Spectral LAM's recordsheet.

So my personal theory why the Spectral LAM's cannot use lighter,but, and this is important, also bulkier, equipment(Endo Steel Chassis, Ferro-Fibrous Armor, XL Fusion Engine, XL Gyroscope) is as follows:
The LAM conversion equipment also takes up space on the Spectral LAM(similar to the Standard Fusion Engine) thus limiting the space available for other components and prohibiting the use of the lighter but also bulkier equipment like Endo Steel Chassis, Ferro-Fibrous Armor, XL Fusion Engine, XL Gyroscope etc.

Besides that I agree with Dread Moores in that LAM's using all that lighter equipment would indeed be pretty ridiculous.

I don't know.
They need to have lighter and/or smaller components because they lose space and weight with their conversion equipment.

How does the Dark Age have anything to do with the construction rules of LAMs? LAMs disappeared as largely a failure long before the Dark Age was in the picture. Both in-game and out. Personally, the setting is much better off without them. Having played against custom LAMs using weight-saving technologies...you absolutely do not want them in the game that way.

Agreed. I think someone just skipped over the Fall of the Star League and four Succession Wars.  ;)

I would think with the strides the WOB plus Manei Domini made in technology. They should of been able to offset some or all the problems Lam's have.

They did. Compare the Spectral LAMs (with their MD tech) to the LAMs from the Age of War (and TRO 3085). They simply didn't make improvements on construction materials. That's largely for a rather important out-of-game reason that overrides in-game storyline. LAMs built that way are busted, busted, broken. The Spectral LAMs have improvements by their very nature of being Spectral LAMs and allowing MD pilots to be used. Additionally, there's always that in-game reason to use as reasons for lack of further development. LAMs have largely been viewed as a failure. Something that the Star League could do, and used, but far more expensive and resource-intensive than the results they delivered. I think that's actually a great place for LAMs to be, as it is yet one more thing that sets the Star League above and apart from what factions can accomplish now. "Yes, we know these things aren't worthwhile. We don't care. We're going to build tens of thousands of them. See how cool we are?"
