Name 5 mechs....
« on: September 05, 2012, 10:21:18 AM »

in relation to my unseen being Sacrosanct poll, I am going to ask the question that was asked me.  Name 5 Battlemechs that OOZE raw battletech aesthetics.

as a follow up question.  Pick one battlemech that oozes each great house as a seperate list.

top 5 for me: Centurion, Hammerhands, Battlemaster, Mad Cat, Wolfhound.

and the house mechs

Steiner: Zeus
Kurita: (Grand) Dragon
Davion: Enforcer (III)
Liao: Cataphract
Marik: Hermes II

Atlas, Timber Wolf, Shadow Hawk, Wasp, Nova Cat

Atlas a mech I rarely use but screams Battletech from its core

Timber Wolf the original Clan Mech scary as hell even today in the right hands I don't use the Mad Cat designation for the design purely because there are so many Mad Cats

Shadow Hawk I've loved it since Decision at Thunder Rift, mixes all the weapons into its frame

Wasp same as shadow hawk loved it forever even though others have passed it

Nova Cat my Clan Mech in the canon universe.  It's the opposite to the timber wolf sacrificing speed for firepower and armour

Davion - Enforcer, Templar
Steiner - Fafnir, Hauptmann
Kurita - the original IS OmniMechs, Jenner
Liao - Men Shen, Vindicator, Emperor
Marik - Albatross, trebuchet (not generally an FWL player/fan)

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

BattleMaster (new), Timber Wolf, Dire Wolf, Atlas, Highlander

Davion: Valkyrie, Enforcer III
Steiner: Zeus, Fafnir
Kurita: Dragon, Owens
Liao: Vindicator, Men Shen
Marik: Orion, Albatross

I couldn't go with just one Mech for each house so I picked an older one and a newer one, several more could be used just as easily in each slot for each house (Javelin, Wolfhound, Jenner, Cataphract, Wolverine and Templar, Hauptman, Avatar, Yu Huang, Perseus would work just as well along with many other combos)

Yeah, I'm going to buck the trend here. I'll pretty much discount anything prior to 3060. Raw Battletech aesthetics prior to that were predominately line art drawings of walking tanks with nowhere near enough visual flair and unique faction appearance. The aesthetic was "plain and boring." I know, I know, sacrilege and all that. It's probably even more sacrilegious that I think the 3050 Clan Omnis are some of the worst visual representations out there. Smashing existing designs together to make a new one doesn't sound interesting to me, it sounds lazy and boring. Clan visuals don't hit their stride until much later, and I'm hoping that at some point the love affair with the hideously ugly Timberwolf goes away. But this isn't simply meant as a bash on the older TROs, more for a compliment to the more recent artists. I don't look at a Dragon and think "Oh, DC 'Mech! Cool!" Well, to be accurate, I do, but not for any visual reasons. That's all based from the fluff and the setting. That's something that older designs tended to favor, giving you an image that would have certain connections because of the accompanying fluff. More recent designs have worked to show specific faction or corporate styles on a visual level, allowing a glance to tell a great deal about the design before ever touching the accompanying fluff.

1. The Cygnus. Yes, I love the external ammo feed. I think it is a brilliant visual, and realistic weapon depictions tend not to intervene with my Battletech needs very often. It reminds me of some kind of nightmarish monster on horseback ready to mow you down.

2. Most of the Celestial series. 'Nuff said.

3. The Ti-Tsang. I don't have a great explanation here, other than the fact that I saw the design long before ever reading the fluff or TRO. It stuck as Capellan from the initial viewing, so I guess the artist was pretty successful.

4. The Fafnir. Walking tank of doom with big boomsticks. That's definitely a BT aesthetic, and few designs do it better.

5. Blood Reaper. Love this thing. It looks like a low slung canine hurtling along the ground to tear your throat out. And then it does.

Props to Dread Mores for bucking the trend.

I agree with you on the line art, it is one of the reasons the 3050U and 3055U are far and away superior to their predessceors (that and Brent Evans is the Effing man!)

Sadly I am willing to be cash money that every single design predominantly associated with the Word of Blake is going to be part of that Cull.

Does make sense JP, they aren't really associated with good times.

that depends on your definition of good times, I though the Jihad was great fun to play in, and frankly it will be my primary timeline now.
