Need Help with New Style Record Sheets
« on: March 26, 2012, 12:08:47 AM »

I am currently looking at creating over two hundred record sheets in PDF format for the TRO:3063.

This is because the previous fellow who was going to do it dropped off the planet.

I need the new style sheets, as I plan to put miniatures of the art on them.  I think SSW can generate the sheets for 'Mechs, but have no idea what to use when doing the Vehicles or Aerospace Fighters.

Right now what I have are the sheets generated by the Heavy Metal suite of programs.  Adequate, but kinda old-fashioned.

Can anyone tell me what kind of software will do the job?

MegaMek Lab will handle printing new style record sheets, but you would have to hand create the file for MegaMek. (If you can build it in HMV, that shouldn't be too hard.) You would then need to add the MegaMek style file into the appropriate zip file in MML. You could then print from there (as in physically print). Printing it to a file or PDF? No clue.

Solaris Armor Works is under way, and in a very early alpha stage (check out the latest SSW download, it includes SAW with SSW). It really can't handle any non-tournament tech currently, and definitely still has a lot of bugs. But work seems to be progressing somewhat quickly. Quicker than HMP's new version at least.

It's kind of a crappy time if you want to create units, but don't care for the old style record sheets.

Correction: After looking at the most recent (Jan 2012) version of MML, it now apparently handles building combat vehicles and BA. I wasn't aware of that. Still unsure how much you can do in terms of printing the record sheet to a file, but that may be worth a look.

Yeah, I need to make VTOLs and aerospace, but right now it looks like I will have to cut and paste with blank record sheets culled from PDF files.  Gotta pony up for the $25 converter, but it does a fine job and other than being laborious, the process works.

Or I could use the output from HMV and HMA.  Rick says he won't be updating the printed output of those two programs as HM6 is getting close to completion and is taking all his time.

Okay!

1) PDFill is a free download, it offers a buttload of free tools that work very, very well with no watermarks.

2) I was able to go in and create my own Record Sheets based on existing products, generating the relative handful of machines that either had Fractional Accounting or were of a type not covered by MML (MegaMek Lab) - which itself worked quite well despite a few bugs in the Omni section.

3) I used ArcSoft PhotoStudio 5 for image manipulation - it was free, I have been using it for what seems like decades, and it does the job quite well.

4) There is a single piece of art - the Capellan Xuan Wu - which is getting redone.  Once I drop it into InDesign CS3 and the couple of record sheets, I will be essentially ready to go to press.  The new cover is gorgeous.  Anthony Scroggins and Chris Daranouvong did a stand-up job.  You can even see the MechWarriors in their cockpits!

5) The Press-Quality version of the Record Sheet Annex is a mere 530 MB.  But gosh, it sure makes nice record sheets - all 215 of them.

Three weeks from now, it is go-time!

Cover is finished.  Chris Daranouvong and Anthony Scroggins did a damn fine job on this one.

Two more pieces of art and payment complete, we are go.

I could plug your mechs into my database at http://goodsects.gotdns.com/bte if you want.  In fact, I still think I have an excel file from a while back and could quite easily (<1 hr) import them into there and have you working sheets, with art, including battleforce/quickstrike sheets.  I could also do it offline and keep it off the public site.

However they'd be a wee bit different, as I'm using hexagons instead of circles, and instead of brackets I use "..." to show continuing items.  I could work out a few bugs if the site was used more and make it more like megamek lab or whatever, just gotta have the motivation.
