New Project, looking for feedback
« on: October 03, 2012, 06:28:23 AM »

I have an idea for a new mech (oh dear...), and I'd like to get a second opinion, so to speak. What's important is the appearance and fluff; the stats will just fill out the record sheet. This first part I posted on Solaris7 a while back; it's from the time when I had time to work with Blender. The idea is a fast assault mech from the Star League era

Since I don't have a lot of free time, I knocked the modern upgrade out in a quick and dirty DOGA render:

I have a rough idea for stats, and a general path for the fluff, but nothing specific. Opinions?

I like the last two the most, maybe make the arm weapons AC or Gauss instead of more lasers just for interest.

Sorta reminds me of a Cestus crossed with a Hammerhand

(If I was going to arm it)

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

I might knock it down 5 tons Dragon Cat and see what kind of arsenal she can carry with a 400XL giving it a 5/8 speed. The fastest an assault can be lucho. I'm thinking the true realization of the olde Charger project with some kind of firepower. Could a Gauss/ER PPC combo fit? You'd get a lot of free heat sinks (16) with the engine. Space for endo steel and maybe even ferro fibrous. 4 Medium Lasers and 2 Small Lasers to complete the weapon look. Are those hand actuators? Can barely make out some fingers on the side of the arm mounted weapons. Looks like you certainly have upper and lower arm actuators. Searching for some critical spaces. Obviously if the League could make such a Mech (maybe even has ties to the Exterminator) it would be one hell of a pursuer. Ideal for chasing down raiders and bandits. Something the SLDF could use. It may have to sacrifice armor though to get the speed/firepower edge I'm thinking. I'll have to think about it some more.  ;)

the running pose and sleek body make me think of a much lighter machine, 45-65 tons.  you can also take the time to really explore the use of Esoteric PPCs or light autocannons for main guns.

The main guns seem more Lasers/PPC/Light Autocannons oriented.

Interesting, great minds think alike... I was planning initially to mount LB-10X on the Star League version, and Ultra AC-10s on the modern upgrade, or a variant with Lt Gauss Rifles. I was thinking of 85t too, but an 80t 5/8 assault- or even a 65t 6/9- is very interesting.

Hmm, an 80t 5/8 with ES, max FF, and XLFE would have 29t for weapons and heatsinks. A 65t 6/9 with ES, max FF, and XLFE  would have 20t for weapons and such.

Great ideas guys! Keep 'em coming  :)

the more I look at it the more I think making it an Ostwar Variant or Revival would be a good fictional starting point.

Interesting layout, DragonCat. A bit oversinked though. I like the idea of a 80t 5/8 assault; a very heavy harasser, made for shock tactics. One idea I'm looking into is paired Ultra AC-5s. Easily available during the Star League era, and upgradeable to Lt Gauss in the modern era. At least for the 80t concept. For 85t, I might go with paired AC-20s  ;D

Here's another render. I changed the main guns to something a bit more robust, more BFG-ish.

Ok, a couple of more images, and I promise to get cracking on the fluff. So far, I'm leaning toward 80-85 tons, produced by the Free Worlds League shortly before the Amaris Crisis- and used by Kenyon Marik to provoke Kerensky, and reintroduced in the aftermath of the Jihad.

These are my initial renders in Blender; still trying to get the camo to look good (man, I'm still a noob with Blender  :-[ )
