Quicksilver Feild Report: Clans 3055
« on: March 04, 2015, 01:42:27 PM »

Well you can thank masterarminas for this everyone. Inspired by the 155th Mechanized Garrison Cluster from Hell's Horses I would love to hear your ideas and profiles for Clan units following our grand design contests. It is important you adhere to the winning designs and how they impact the Clans. You can detail existing units that have undergone changes as part of the Quicksilver Trails or create new ones where justified. So come on and help flesh out the Clans as of January 3055 after the events of Quicksilver. All are welcome to this open unit design challenge.

I must admit I had a few ideas my self based on some fluff

Quote
Ice Hellion are currently evaluating the first models in their Flurry Clusters and depending upon the results of the Quicksilver Trails could expand the reach of Combat Vehicles rapidly. In a move that shocked many the Khan has already ordered the activation of a second line armored unit, the 1st Blizzard Cluster. Despite resistance from the rank and file rumors are already circulating that the Clan is considering the creation of new front line armored units called Avalanche Clusters. The good performance of Flurry units after the Hellion’s Fury, the creation of new Clan OmniVehicles, and the Hellion’s need for more combatants may create the perfect storm that now opponent can hope to defeat.

Also I was gonna try to put together a Pegasus Cluster for the Hell's Horses which featured some of their new fighters.  ;)

Oh and lets not forget the unit that started it all, link below.

188th Raven Independent Aerospace Cluster

Nickname:  Night Witches

Commander:  Star Colonel Samantha Crow

Motto:  Aut Vincere Aut Mori ("Conquer or Die")

Insignia:  A green shield outlined in gold with five black diagonal stripes across the upper right half descending from left to right.  Five black Maltesse Crosses adorn the lower left, each outlined in white.  The stripes represent the Pentagon Worlds with the black as a remembrance of the dead involved in the Pentagon Civil War.  The crosses are emblematic of an Ace's Kills and represent the units skill-at-arms.  A white banner beneath the shield, outlined in gold, with the words "Aut Vincere Aut Mori" in blue emblazoned.

Description:  The Night Witches are a Clan Snow Raven OmniFighter formation that traces their lineage back to the SLDF 188th Royal Independent Aero Wing (one of the few independent regiments of the Star League-in-Exile to follow Nicholas Kerensky on on his Exodus to the Kerensky Cluster).

Newly reformed (the original 188th was disbanded in 2942), this Cluster is intended to test and evaluate the new Quicksilver OmniFighter assets in combat.

Hastily organized by Lynn McKenna in 3053, the Night Witches are a most unusual Clan unit.  This formation only accepts veteran Pilots who can claim at least five kills in live combat.  Furthermore, the 188th only inducts women into their ranks.  Not one Pilot, nor any Technician, nor any single member of the JumpShip or DropShip crews, nor any Elemental Warrior assigned to the unit are of the male gender.

These two requirements have made it difficult to fill the ranks of the new Cluster and, to date, it has an offical strength of just two Binary (four Stars), plus Transport elements and a mere ten Elemental Marines.

This small size has led some Warriors within other Clans (and not a few Raven Warriors as well) to voice disparaging remarks concerning Star "Colonel" Crow and her qualifications; remarks questioning not only her ability, but her very character and the unusual nature of her appointment to the rank and position she now holds.

This 'smear-campaign' has generated a great deal of anger among the Warriors of the 188th . . . an anger that they are focusing on their flight and combat skills.  It is all but certain that the first opposing unit to see action against the Night Witches will regret it; if there are any survivors, that is.

Unit Organization:

The 188th is divided into two OmniFighter Binary, each transported aboard a pair of Carrier-class DropShips.  All four DropShips are embarked aboard an Odyssey-class JumpShip.  Unlike most other Clans, the Raven DropShips and JumpShips are directly under the command of Star Colonel Crow and have been permanetly attached to the Night Witches.

Star Colonel Crow normally commands the 188th from the lead cockpit of Alpha Star, but will sometimes coordinate actions from the Combat Information Center aboard the JumpShip Blackbird.

Transport Section:

CSRJS Blackbird (Odyssey-class)

CSRDS Circe (Carrier-class; Alpha Star)
CSRDS Hecate (Carrier-class; Beta Star)
CSRDS Medea (Carrier-class; Gamma Star)
CSRDS Morgaine (Carrier-class; Delta Star)

Binary One:

Alpha Star:  6 x Zulu; 4 x Apache
Beta Star:  6 x Zulu; 4 x Apache

Binary Two:

Gamma Star:  6 x Hun; 4 x Zulu
Delta Star:  6 x Hun; 4 x Zulu

The twenty Zulu-class Medium-weight OmniFighters are produced by Clan Snow Raven.  The eight lighter (30-ton) Apaches have been acquired from Clan Ghost Bear (a fact which has NOT made the Cobra leadership very pleased with the Bears).

The acquisition of the eighty-five ton Hun, however, is a story in and of itself.  Although defeated in the Quicksilver competition, the Scorpions, Jaguars, and Coyotes had already built some twenty working models and had another ten under construction.

With the loss of the design in the Quicksilver Trials, Clans Coyote and Smoke Jaguar both washed their hands of the affair and ended production . . . leaving twenty working (and ten incomplete) frames in the hands of Clan Goliath Scorpion.

Which the Snow Ravens bought for a mere pittance of their actual worth (although the Scorpions were loath to accept the deal offered, their heavy debt towards Clan Diamond Shark left them with little choice in the matter).  The Ravens spared no expense in finishing the incomplete units and have since assigned a dozen Huns to the 188th.

Of course, with no replacement frames on the horizon, the Ravens will have to find an alternative fighter before long; but for now?  For now, the Ravens are fielding the Scorpion designed Hun.

Deployment:

The 188th is intended to serve Clan Snow Raven as a fast-reaction OmniFighter force.  Able to support any front-line or second-line Cluster or Galaxy, the Night Witches are highly mobile and are expected to respond to requests for aid and assistance without waiting for authorization from a senior Raven officer.

Space superiority missions (and training) have been a high priority for Star Colonel Crow; however, she has not neglected recon flights nor Close-Air-Support missions.  Although the Night Witches are most confident in deep space, they are no strangers to atmospheric operations.

Character Dossier:  Samantha Crow

At 39 years of age, Samantha Crow is entering the very peak of her career as a Snow Raven Aerospace Pilot.  Tall (for a Pilot) at 5'9", she is a willowy dark-haired beauty  who only finds true happiness in her life when she is in the cockpit of a fighter-craft in the heat of battle.  A noted tactician and strategist, Crow was appointed to the rank of Star Colonel and command of the Night Witches by Khan Lynn McKenna.  This move caused rumors to circulate concerning their 'relationship' and prompted several Trials of Refusal (six, at last count, every one of which Samantha Crow has handily won . . . even the two which involved hand-to-hand combat).

The Trials have only fueled the rumors, because many within the Touman simply cannot believe that a Pilot was able to defeat two MechWarriors in melee combat on the ground!  At least, not without some illegal and dishonorable chemical 'edge'.  Added to that 'fact' is her close friendship with Scientist Kristina (of the Crow Blood-line; a sibkin who washed out as a Warrior in her final year and is now assigned as the KF Drive Engineer aboard Blackbird); this has served to only intensify the rumors and murmurs surrounding her and her command.

Although she makes no sign of it in public, in private Crow is furious over the entire matter.  But she has directed that fury into making absolutely certain that her Pilots, Techs, and crew(wo-)men receive the very best training and leadership.  And hopefully, she will have a target to shoot live ammunition at very, very soon.

146th Assault Cluster (Kerensky’s Own)

Skill Level: Veteran
Loyalty Rating: Questionable

Created early in 3053 by Loremaster George Kerensky this legacy formation honors the most sacred SLDF Division among the Exiles. The original 146th Royal BattleMech Division was commanded by then-Major General Nicholas Kerensky as the Exodus Civil War began. It was this Star League unit that eventually became the sole BattleMech force which defended his rightful claim to leadership and ultimately gave birth to the Clans. Almost 251 years to the day after the Division was demobilized the ilKhan gave his blessing in the Daggerstar Directive which authorized the creation of special heritage Clusters that would pay tribute to the origins of the Clans.

Given its special place in Clan history and the Wolves habit of harvesting warriors from others it was no surprise that this new Cluster quickly became host to more than a dozen warriors from at least nine Clans. That these abtakha were chosen to serve as the unit’s officers was a shock especially to many young Wolf Supremacists who made up the bulk of this new command. Chaffing under those “inferior” to themselves has revealed many harsh lessons in reality to these pups. Many have cycled threw the Cluster either testing down into garrison billets or receiving a “promotion” to feed the ilKhan's new Keshiks.

No doubt the Wolves hope to completely weed out the Supremacist ideal and any Crusader troublemakers along the way. Those who learn and remain will likely compose the finest Assault Cluster left in the Clan Homeworlds given time. Whether or not this newest part of Gamma Galaxy can accomplish this monumental task is anyone’s guess. While their skill level and loyalty continues to vary the Cluster rarely wants for new gear. The bulk of their equipment comes from the Wolf Clan and thanks to generous gifting from other Clans it features many new Quicksilver pieces.

OFFICERS
Star Colonel Hannibal Drummond was a young Nova Cat ristar prior to the invasion that the Wolves ‘harvested” for their touman. Defeated by then Star Captain George Kerensky he was quickly adopted into his new Clan. Serving along side Kerensky throughout the InnerSphere campaign both served with distinction. When the 146th was initially assembled the new Loremaster tapped his close friend to command the unit. Many have noted that this skilled Mechwarrior and unorthodox tactician has an uncanny ability to predict his opponents next move. His former Clan presented Drummond with a new Pulsar OmniMech as a reward for the special distinction he earned.

Star Captain Daniela Kufahl formerly of the Coyotes volunteered for service with the 146th shortly after its creation. Currently the oldest warrior in the unit her experience and loyalty is beyond question. Kufahl has zealously overseen the instruction of new Wolf warriors. She has not only delighted in defeating these supposed superior youngsters but has also rewarded those who have proven their ability. She has used connections within her parent Clan to gift several pieces of equipment including a couple of Menotious OmniMechs to true Wolf warriors.

Star Captain Kaleb of the Winson blood house was one of the first Wolf Supremacists to join the new Assault Cluster. Stubborn and prideful he met several early reversals but refused to quit or accept promotion outside the Clan. His determination to excel eventually overcame his initial hubris enabling his instructors to hone a natural cunning. Steadily on the rise Kaleb proudly pilots a Timber Wolf OmniMech cast off by Alpha Galaxy and looks forward to one day winning his bloodname in anticipation of future advancement.

Star Captain Carl Leroux followed Loremaster Kerensky to Gamma Galaxy where he quickly tested up into the command of the 146th’s Aerospace Trinary known as the Top Dogs. Along with his point man and sibkin Jochom they make up the so-called Widowmaker contingent of the Cluster. Many Wolf upstarts have made the mistake of challenging the Star Captain as an outsider but none have survived to repeat their error. With reflexes unmatched in Clan space this ambidextrous aerospace ace maybe one of the finest pilots ever birthed by the eugenics program.

Star Captain Gregory of the Mitchell blood house came from the Hell’s Horses as part of a contract bid during the Quicksilver Trails. He was one of a number of officers charged with incorporating new OmniVehicles into frontline service with the Wolves a task that led him to the 146th. So far he has been able to integrate a Star of Fenris VTOL Gunships into the Cluster with some success. Critics often point to his minor bloodname as proof of inferiority but this Elemental has proven them all wrong.

The only Clans without any representation in the unit thus far are Burrock, Diamond Shark, Fire Mandrill, Jade Falcon, Smoke Jaguar, and Steel Viper. Snow Raven sent a pilot as part of their agreement for the Avar while Goliath Scorpion apologized for a few incidents during Quicksilver with a Mechwarrior. Cloud Cobra dispatched two pilots for service in the Cluster with one tracing her heritage to the absorbed Mongoose Clan. Three Clans (Ghost Bear, Ice Hellion, and Star Adder) all acknowledged their special ties to the 146th by sending members of blood name houses (Cage, Jorgensson, LeFabre, Truscott, and Tseng) to serve in the unit. Many of these warriors have bought new gear from the Quicksilver Program with them making the Cluster a nexus for cutting edge Clan equipment.

TRANSPORTATION
Invader class Jumpship: Astral Wolf (captured from the InnerSphere)
Overlord-C class Dropship: William the Conqueror (aka Willie)
Titan-C class Dropship: Torch
Lion class Dropship: Kilroy

TACTICS
A new unit which can be best described as an unstoppable wall of steel the 146th strives to be aggressive. For them the best defense is to stay on offensive and despite their slow ground speed the Clusters always seems to be on the attack.

ORGANIZATION
The Assault Cluster is quite unfamiliar to Gamma Galaxy but the addition of these massive OmniMechs has given them extra punch. More typical is the Fighter Trinary which is more in line with Gamma Clusters even though they are usually lighter weight. The Elemental Binary and OmniVehicle Star are constantly working on maneuvers. Currently they are not grouped together which has raised the interesting possibility of the VTOLs operating independently if so ordered.

Trinary Command (4/6 MP)
Alpha Battle Star (1 Pulsar, 4 Crazy Horse)
Bravo Assault Star (2 Executioner, 1 Nightstalker, 2 Glaive)
Charlie Assault Star (2 Black Mamba, 3 Glaive)

Delta Assault Star (1 Savage Coyote, 2 Kinslayer, 2 Clansman)
Echo Assault Star (3 Dire Wolf, 2 Menitious)
Foxtrot Assault Star (1 Stone Lion, 2 Kinslayer, 2 Clansman)
Trinary Battle (5/8 MP)
Golf Assault Star (1 Timber Wolf, 4 Gargoyle)
Hotel Battle Star (2 Timber Wolf, 1 Summoner, 2 Hellbringer)
India Battle Star (2 Timber Wolf, 1 Summoner, 2 Hellbringer)
Trinary Fighter (30 Fighters)
Juliet Attack Star (4 Kirghiz, 3 Scytha, 2 Jenghiz, 1 Cimmerian)
Kilo Strike Star (6 Jagatai, 1 Zulu, 3 Visigoth)
Lima Interceptor Star (1 Sulla, 1 Batu, 7 Avar, 1 Apache)
Binary Elemental
   Mike Elemental Star (25 Elementals)
   November Elemental Star (25 Elementals)
Rogue VTOL Star (10 Fenris VTOL Gunships)

Name
1st Phalanx Cluster

Nickname
Shield of the Bear

Commander
Star Colonel Justinian Hall

Motto
ἢ τὰν ἢ ἐπὶ τᾶς
“Either with your shield, or on it !”

Insignia
A bronze hoplite shield with the Clan Ghost Bear logo in the middle of it.

History
The 1st Phalanx Cluster is a bold experiment within a bold experiment.
Following Khan Bjorn Jorgensson's orders and the success of the 139th Striker Cluster, it was decided that the under formation Omega Galaxy would need some defensive unit that might serve later as the model for a new type of units to protect the Clan holdings, “to be the true Shield of the Bear!” This is why Galaxy Commander Hunter Tseng ordered Star Colonel Justinian Hall to design something that could “take head-on anything the Clans or the Inner Sphere would throw at it and bite them to death.”
Following these orders, Star Colonel Justinian Hall took note of both Inner Sphere and Clans best practices and selected with great care his officers and soldiers as he knew that it would be hard for Clan 'MechWarriors to go so deeply on this path.

So far, tensions have arisen among the different units but the extra training regimen they are going through has kept things at an acceptable level.

Tactics
Designed as a double testbed unit, the 1st Phalanx Cluster is focusing on two things: fighting like a true combined-arms unit of the Inner Sphere to allow them to “learn the ways of the Inner Sphere and employ them on the battlefield, while maintaining the spirit of a true Clan warrior” and providing a new defensive unit for Clan Ghost Bear holdings.
Thanks to its diversified composition and the rigorous training regiment set by Star Colonel Justinian Hall and his officers, the unit is succeeding on both accounts and is showing an impressive flair for mixing Inner Sphere defensive tactics with the might and fury of a true Ghost Bear warrior in an unique and devastating approach.

Organisation
A truly experimental Cluster, the 1st Phalanx Cluster is a mix of both Clan and Inner Sphere structures with an unique combined-arms approach that would not be denied by Clan Hell's Horses.

Alpha Trinary (BattleMechs): Star Colonel Justinian Hall
Made of 3 Stars of second-line Medium BattleMechs, Trinary Alpha provides the perfect mix between punch and mobility that might be needed by the Cluster.

Alpha Star: 5* Wyvern IIC
Beta Star: 5* Griffin IIC
Gamma Star: 5* Shadow Hawk IIC

Beta Supernova Trinary (Vehicles and Elementals): Nova Captain Alastar
Designed around the Shiva OmniTank acquired from the Diamond Sharks in exchange for a supply of captured Rommels and Pattons coupled together with Elemental Stars in Novas, the Supernova Trinary Beta is the heart and soul of the Cluster offensive and defensive operations with the needed extra mobility provided to the Elementals mounting the Omnitanks.

Alpha Nova: 10 Shiva OmniTanks and 25 Elementals
Beta Nova: 10 Shiva OmniTanks and 25 Elementals
Gamma Nova: 10 Shiva OmniTanks and 25 Elementals

Gamma Supernova Trinary (Vehicles and Infantry): Nova Captain Natasha Cobb
This is where Clan Hell's Horses influence might be the biggest into this unit as it just a rework of the Trinary Epsilon type designed to be the anvil to anchor the Cluster.

Alpha Nova: 10 Shiva OmniTanks and 125 Foot Infantry soldiers with 10 Badgers C
Beta Nova: 10 Shiva OmniTanks and 125 Foot Infantry soldiers with 10 Badgers C
Gamma Nova: 10 Shiva OmniTanks and 125 Foot Infantry soldiers with 10 Badgers C

Delta Trinary (Vehicles): Nova Captain HÃ¥kan
Another oddity among the Clans, this Trinary is an artillery unit designed to bring the wrath of Clan Ghost Bear on any unworthy opponent.

Alpha Star: 10 Thor Fighting Vehicles
Beta Star: 10 Thor Fighting Vehicles
Gamma Star: 10 Donar Assault Helicopters

Epsilon Trinary (Aerospace Fighters): Nova Captain Iseut
A typical Second-Line Aerospace unit, it is made of former Star League Fighters that the Aerospace Pilots take great pride in flying into combat.

Alpha Star: 10 Rogues
Beta Star: 10 Ironsides
Gamma Star: 10 Lucifers

Deployment
The 1st Phalanx Cluster is moving around the different planets held by Clan Ghost Bear in the Inner Sphere to acquire as much experience as possible while remaining on the move and an asset (even if is an untried one like all the Omega Galaxy) for Clan Ghost Bear.

Biographies
Star Colonel Justinian Hall was one of the Star Captain in the 139th Striker Cluster, Justinian Hall developed like the other Star Captains of the unit a deep knowledge of Inner Sphere tactics and units. What set him apart were his diplomatic skills that now Galaxy Commander Hunter Tseng knew was needed if the 1st Phalanx Cluster was to become a success.

Nova Captain Natasha Cobb comes from Clan Hell's Horses 201st Mechanised Assault, the Bearslayer Cluster. Captured as a bondsman in one of the fights between both Clans and knowing well that her experience as a member of an Epsilon Trinary would work against her in her new Clan, she was surprised and delighted when Star Colonel Justinian Hall proposed her to lead the new Gamma Supernova Trinary of his unit. Eager to prove her worth before it is too late, she doesn't allow any weakness in her Trinary and doesn't expect anything but the best from the Warriors under her.

Nova Captain Håkan is also a bondsman but one from the KungsArmé. An artillery specialist in the 2nd Freemen, he was well versed in the art of the concentrated artillery strikes that were one of the specialities of this KungsArmé. One of the few artillery specialists available in Clan Ghost Bear, he sees his work as a way towards the creation of something new mixing the best of both worlds. His rather relaxed approach to discipline when not on the battlefield is known to make Nova Captain Natasha Cobb furious.

Skill level: Regular
Loyalty rating: Reliable

Edit
The 1st Phalanx Cluster was at the same time too successful and too strange for the cautious Bears.
It paved the way to the different Phalanx Clusters used in the Clan Touman but its unique nature made it difficult to be kept there and as such in 3058, it was disbanded, his men being redeployed elsewhere as needed, leaving room for the newly created 10th Bear Cuirassiers.

I like it, very interesting Ice! The combined arms concept is pretty solid and fitting all four types (Mech, Vehicle, Fighter, Infantry) into one Cluster is a new approach that each Clan will likely experiment with.

Few questions
1. Don't the Bears already have Phalanx Clusters which are Armored (Vehicle) Clusters?
2. Why did you go with the Shiva? The Yen Lo Wang was the winner of the Main Battle Tank trail.
3. Did you do the insignia? Looks good!

Please keep these unit ideas coming!!!

Few questions

1. Don't the Bears already have Phalanx Clusters which are Armored (Vehicle) Clusters?

Yes but it didn't seem logical to me that such a cautious Clan would have developed since centuries, something that is alien to it.
I tried to think about an "ancestor" to it but as you might see from the last paragraphs, this experience was short-lived and everything got back to a "normal" Omega Galaxy.

2. Why did you go with the Shiva? The Yen Lo Wang was the winner of the Main Battle Tank trail.

Because I think the Shiva is cooler?  :P Just kidding but I have a soft spot for Patton/Rommel tanks and I thought that being exposed to them or their ICE cousins would make the Ghost Bears eager to use it (and they did with their IIC variant). And also Clan Diamond Shark is ready to sell everything for the right price, which made it easier to fit Clan Ghost Bear in the picture.
I will rewrite this part of the fluff.

3. Did you do the insignia? Looks good!

Yes with Gimp. I also did a couple of signatures on Solaris.

This choice may seem strange but having faced several times in battle these Tanks and knowing their potential, Nova Captain Alastar was delighted to learn that a Clan had developed an Omni version of it and requested it to form the basis of his unit and after reviewing several after action reports and battle footages, Nova Captain Natasha Cobb agreed with him.

An artillery specialist in the 2nd Freemen, he was well versed in the art of the concentrated artillery strikes that were one of the specialities of this KungsArmé unit.

I love the idea Ice but two things.

One I would like to reserve the Phalanx name for Ghost Bear Armored Units seen in service with second line Galaxies. I think those Clusters have been around for years and became "segregated" from the rest of the Touman years ago. If you look at FM Warden Clans other warriors have problems working with them because of their vehicle nature. Could we provide them with another Greek name? How about the 1st Hippeis Cluster? That way you keep it related to the Phalanx

Two lets not be so quick to write off the unit. I am just looking for a 3055 status report. Don't mind if there is a tension here because after all Vehicles is a hard thing for the Bears to swallow. The Clan did turn down the opportunity to participate in the Quicksilver Vehicle Trails only to make a last second entry. So I think they are certainly conflicted.

Which would mean that they are quite new.
If they had been around for years, there would be no problem.

Since I don't know where you are heading, I tried to stay close to the canon history or organisation but still playing in the holes I found.

Are you drawing a conclusion based upon incomplete information we have on the Bear Phalanx Clusters? The Bears being so conservative I doubt they would have ever have completely gotten rid of Vehicles. Plus there are other Phalanx Clusters with Wolf, Steel Viper, and Snow Raven which makes me think the formation is an older Clan formation which is defensive in nature. Hence I believe the Bear Phalanx Clusters are old likely dating back to the days after Klondike.

I understand bud. Just leave the future to me.  ;)
