SLDF and the Coup
« on: August 20, 2010, 02:43:23 PM »

I just compiled the data available in the Star League Sourcebook and here are the results (see attached file).

I have a few conclusions coming to my mind but I would like to hear yours.

That the infantry were sick and tired of being used as cannon fodder, left with Kerensky and then got shafted by Clan society.

That the Mech units had become a little jaded and saw thier chance to be king makers, let AK head off and sold thier souls/mechs to the highest bidder.

Rerun your numbers- there were 125 battlemech divisions in the SLDF, not 215.  That will change the conclusions some...

Per the TO&E shown in the SLSB there were 3 regiments per Mech Division, we also know there were independent regiments and even armor divisions but with a few exceptions they are not mentioned and there are no details on their losses.

Right, Special Operations is a wild guess as well.

Well for the SpecOps TO&E we know there were 4 RDMAF units (Deneb Light Cavalry), although we only know the fate of the 4th.

You also have the SAS (Special Armed Services) of which the Blackhearts were the 77th IIRC.  Again we have little info on their final fate.  There were also the All Weather Combat Corps - mech battalions trained for fighting in non-standard environments, and the Special Forces Aero Wing.   All we know about these last 2 units is their name. (Interesting point the RDMAF is not mentioned in the SLSB which raises the question of how many other SOF units have gone unmentioned.)

Yeah their is plenty of wiggle room in Special Operations to create X amount of commands. As Six states quite correctly you have the Deneb Light Cavalry which established that canon example. Then from fanon we got groups like SOAR and the Deep Space Cavalry which are good examples of other niches which could be plausibly filled by the largest military ever established.

According to the original House Davion source book at the height of the Star League. The Regular Army boasted a group of Mech Regiments. I contend that this means more than 4 units existed at this time.

Going through the SLSB, you will find that in each Battlemech Division, there were three brigades, each with three regiments of mech's, plus one three-regiment brigade of armor...Those figures are reversed, however, in the Armored, Mech-Inf and Jump Inf div's...In effect, every single division-equivalent formation in the SLDF had either 3 or 6 Battlemech regiments.

And this does NOT count the 'pony' regiments like the ELH......

I still disagree with the conclusion of Jihad Terra about the viability of the Hegemony.  If the Big K had tried- he had the troops available to rebuild the Hegemony

I have not read Jihad Terra yet but I also agree with you Kerensky could have reforged the Hegemony. He had the loyalty of his troops, the disgust of the people of the other Inner Sphere houses at their own governments and he was just one scary Motherf***er at this time.

Not sure as some of the Successor States would have behaved like the wolves they were in the official timeline.
