Rating the Rulers
« on: January 19, 2014, 09:10:06 PM »

I have been toying with the idea of setting up a system for rating the rulers of the various realms, over BT's history, so that we can compare them against each other.

I was thinking that each person poster could rate a ruler based on the Political Acumen, Strategic Acumen and other various skills and that the results of each would be averaged across the reviewers.  That would gives average scores for each area and also a total.

Maybe one to five a week over a few months until all major characters with decent published bios, write ups of novel time.  That way a comparative database could be built up over time.

Would there be much interest in such an endeavor and what attributes would people feel were necessary to be quantified?

You know there is something wrong with the FWL, when Word's spell check changes Impavido to Impetigo and Zechetinu to Secretion.

Sounds like a ball but there are so many criteria. Do we go by the Succession Wars board game? Various older sourcebooks that list 3050s scions? Who exactly is a "ruler"? Are we talking House Lords or other lesser Sovereigns like Candace Liao? What of military leaders??

Maybe call it major characters/rulers.  I'd put up and initial list for a specific era/conflict and additions could be made based on requests of contributors.

Some examples of what we might rate are:

Political Acumen
Strategic Planning
Leadership
Legacy

Legacy? Short or long term?

also good legacy or bad legacy?  Stephan Amaris for example had a long standing legacy, still remembered half a millenium after his death...

Legacy, as in their works survived to further thier goals through successive generations.

Little of Amaris's legacy was left after the SLDF finished him, but Aleksandr's lived on through the Clans in some way, though that was more his sons.

So you might give Amaris a 0, Kerensky a 2 or 3 and NK a big 10.

one would argue that the Clans became little more then a shell of themselves however, reducing NK down to at least a 5.

the question is is your legacy what you left behind or what you are remembered for?  is it to much to ask for both?

Not at all, we could have physical legacy and intangible legacy.

Also, we will have to set a date for the assessments to be considered in universe.  Perhaps just prior to the collapse of the HPG network in the Dark Ages.  That way, the various attributes are scored according to that time view.

The other method is to score them against their own time, in comparison to those that lived at the same time.

Additionally, seeing what you would score them as, opposed to me is why an average across multiple posters would give a more balanced scoring.
