Okay.  I was thinking about the logistics of moving people from the Clan Homeworlds to the Inner Sphere when I chanced across this excerpt:

STASIS TUBE (Handbook:  Major Periphery States, page 185-186)

These items are a holdover from the Magistracy of Canopus' long-ago days as a Star League Territorial State.  With advanced technologies dating from the mid-27th century, stasis tubes permit cryogenic preservation of human beings--most often terminal patients, whose lives can be prolonged until a cure for their condition exists.  Even in the first Star League's heyday, stasis tubes tended to be an option for the rich, including some of the Magistracy's wealthiest noble families.  Post-Amaris Civil War, several noble scions donated their tubes to major hospitals on Canopus IV and Luxen, where they remain to this day.  (The Clans likewise retained this technology, but use it only sparingly.)

I bolded the line above because it occurs to me that THIS might be the way to move Clan civilians back to the IS in a mass migration.  Each stasis tube masses 1,200 kilograms (1.2 tons) . . . which means that you can fit FOUR stasis tubes in the same space as a single STEERAGE class passenger.  Without the need to provide for 1-2 years of food, water, or air (yeah?).

Sure, it is risky . . . but these are the CLANS we are talking about.  Wouldn't a Clan thinking about moving back to the Inner Sphere (aka canon Ghost Bears, Diamond Sharks, Snow Ravens, Hell's Horses, Wolfs, Jade Falcons, Nova Cats, or my own Scorpions of the Expanses) HAVE to consider using this technology?

After all, it isn't the WARRIORS who are at risk in the tubes; just members of the four 'lower' castes.

Would the Clans use this tech?  SHOULD they have used this tech?

And, if so, how many civilians could an entire Clan move at one time?

Interesting thoughts.

However, why build millions of those, when you can just transport the best of your castes to train billions of new caste members and spend the resources building more OmniMechs?

Just does not seem cost effective, but that is just me.

Nice idea. Just thought about a converted Sylvester Colonial Ship for long term travellas. What a great starting for an AU. :)

Waste of resources, especially since we are talking civilians on a mass scale. In certain extreme cases to preserve a critically injured or sick bloodnamed warrior or powerful caste leader then yes.

the expense of the the tech compared to the stockpiling of foodstuffs (both in terms of building the things and maintainers to operate them) would be astronomical.  more then ANYONE would be willing to put up.  you also have to consider the massive amounts of medical personnel and engineers needed to maintain the tubes would probably represent the entirety of the Clans Medical Community in addition to conscripted personnel from the technician caste.  for every ten tubes you may need one Doctor, One nurse and a team of three Paramedics and two engineers.  now multiply that by the BILLIONS of the Clans sum population.

ON TOP of that is a ships standard crew compliment

all for a 9 month journey...

whose lives are we planning on prolonging here?

Be a neat story if the Clans were keeping Alexander Kerensky in a statis tube. Or may Jerome Blake via ComStar perhaps the Word of Blake cracks it opened. Not a bad idea for a Cameron heir to be kept in this fashion either but the rarity for use like Devlin Stone makes them the exception not a rule.

All that being said it does give me an idea for something else.

the funny thing is Devline Stone was not the only modern character in the franchise to a Stasis Tube.  Good Olde Sunny Boy is on Ice on the planet Liao, where he "Ascended."

Listen, we're all thinking it, but no one wants to say it. Knightmare is Devlin Stone. That stasis tube was built in his garage last month.

Lies. It was built two months ago.

And yes, I have occasionally posed as the Master from Final Reckoning, but only after a particularly good Reds match or day at the gym—so not very often.

It's not specifically mentioned as such, but when Ardan Sortek comes across Hanse's duplicate in the hospital, the duplicate appears to be in a tube. Maybe the duplicate was kept in statis while he was being programmed?

This would be in The Sword and the Dagger by Ardath Mayhar, by the way.
