Warriors and Warships

Any idea how many Clan Warriors are aboard a ship? I am not thinking about those being transported or the Elementals but those serving aboard.

Less than you probably think. You have the officers on the bridge crew, the gunners and the pilots of the warship' dedicated aerospace fighters. That' it, the rest of the crew would be technicians or, perhaps, some laborer caste.

If you know the crew size and how its split I would assume all Gunners and Officers are and the rest are Laborer and Technician Castes

Possibly not even all officers or gunners.  Just because someone is listed as a "gunner" does not mean that they actually pull the trigger.  Some of them are going to be Techs.  And I would imagine that medical personnel are factored in under "officers", as well as things like communications, sensors, quartermasters/logistics, etc.

I don't think there is an answer per se in canon, but I'd go with half of the listed officers and gunners being members of the Warrior caste, along with any attached Elementals and Pilots.  The rest probably are members of the other Castes.

But that is just my opinion.

I was always of the understanding that officers translated into warriors for Clan Warships. Crew equals lower caste personnel although I am of the opinion that not everyone of those would be of the Merchant Caste.

I look at it as this

Department heads/gunnery officers, bridge personnel - all warriors

Everyone else - Technician caste

Elementals and ASF crews are not attached to the ship permanently but assigned when the ship is reactivated.

I'd agree with you on this for anyone besides Clans. I can't see them giving a non-warrior an officer rank. It goes along with all other positions.

If you are a Gunner I'm assuming you are directly responsible for firing weapons otherwise the numbers BT requires for those doesn't make sense if it is supposed include supplemental support I think those as basic crew.

For droppers assuming that the weapons are centally controlled from the bridge then the guy or gal who actually directs the weapons would be a warrior, the gunners techs.  Captain and XO are Warriors, everyone else is Technicians.

That makes me wonder if anyone knows how big the Clans fleets are (including Dropships)?

One idea that I had is that most Clan's fleets and pool of crew/officers for WarShips is actually quite small.

From the fluff and lore we know that for the most part, the Clans tend to hold a somewhat dim view on WarShips.  So those Clans who are of that mind, instead of having their WarShips active all the time, the vast majority of them are laid up in mothballs.  With only a few ships active at any one time.

This would allow them to reduce manning requirements. And active warships 'share' crew. IE for 6 months you might be assigned to a Vincent class, then after that, you're aboard an Aegis.
The warriors who are the ships officers are probably going to be aerospace phenotypes for the most part and these are older warriors, not Solhaman but heading that way.

And if, in times of serious trouble, say the threat of a Trial of Absorption or something, this kind of event would take a long time to arrive so the Clan could have the time to reactivate any ships and get crew on them if needs be.  But i'd guess that most Clan's couldn't fully activate every ship in their Warship fleet and give it their complement of fighters etc because the Clans have major manpower shortages.

That's an interesting idea.
Perhaps, most Dropships are in the hands of civilians, making them in the eyes of the Clans unfit for warfare.

That would actually make sense from a Clan Honor standpoint as to why more fleet battles are not fought and most contests just grant safcon. What warrior wants the glory from beating a mostly civilian opposing force?
