questions I want to ask but know I will not get a straint answer on.  all I know is that had any power managed to take Gibson instead of Sterlizing it or captured Berith or Appollyon without them suiciding that the Manei Domini would not have been ghosts hanging over the inner sphere.

granted I LIKE the Domini Ghosting like they did, I am just curiuous about this particular plot device.

Heh.

The fact is, the only way to gain Apollyon's Key would have been to capture Apollyon himself (or Berith, after he received a copy) without them activating a suicide implant that would have destroyed it. The Key would then have allowed its user to disable or destroy any and all Manei Domini operatives via remote signals--including those relayed through HPGs. It was literally the kill-switch to ALL Manei Domini, everywhere. (But NOT the Thuggee Domini, nor any of the augmented troops who followed Cameron St. Jamais.)

But, you know, glassing Gibson was a good secondary option, if one is in a hurry....

As I said, letting Berith and half the Shadows just disappear was a much better alternative then the "Independence Day" option.

Me, I suppose. We may have dropped hints in prior books, but I kind of don't remember which ones any more.

Why am I not surprised that the Manei Domini had a kill switch - they get out of control, become useless or complete their objectives and switch things go back to normal.  Cold and calculating sounds like the Manei Domini I like it

With the exception of very few members (in fact, only one or two come to mind), the Manei Domini simply did not break ranks. The remote-kill option was instead a feature built in to aid teams in ensuring their partners were not captured unless mission specifics allowed for it. A Domini team of two or more would receive an objective, and some would stay in reserve, observing the situation. If a Domini became incapacitated in a way that somehow did not auto-trigger his suicide implants, his partner--entrusted with the codes for only his teammates--could initiate the self-destruct remotely.

Teamwork, not control!

Of course, this same system would be used on the "operatives" whose augmentations were somewhat less voluntary, later, such as one ex-Circinian pirate in particular...
