(Thought Exercise): Good bye to the Phoenixes (Phoenii?)
« on: August 02, 2012, 04:23:18 PM »

So let's say you wanted the Project Phoenix 'Mechs to disappear from production and usage. Where would you set such an event in the timeline? What would be your cause of choice? And what newer designs would you use to replace these standards? Note, upgraded Phoenix variants don't count. I'm looking for new designs from later TROs.

Have the Jihad wipe out each factory, it was the simplist expidient, but the horse has bolted, so perhaps they were either shut down or re-tooled in the DarK Age as newer designs cam e in.  Perhaps select models (read phoenix/unseen) were incompatible with new technoloiges for some reason.

As for replacements, run a massive fan based submit your design and vote for them comp, with the usual provisos.  That way the players buy into the future of the replacements.

Good point. After the Jihad, it would make sense for manufacturers to take advantage and introduce new product lines. More than one general would likely appreciate the chance for equipment better suited to the realities of the moment, instead of hardware that was designed for the Age of War/Reunification War (Orion, Thunderbolt, Griffin, and so on)

The only issue going post-Jihad is that by the start of the DA era, you've now had 4 generations (hard to believe, I know) of Phoenix designs. Original, 3050, Project Phoenix, and TRO 3085. There's something to be said for roughly 3055 (as another friend mentioned) or perhaps even 3rd SW when at one point, canon had no working factories existing.

we technically already saw that with the Land Air Mechs, and Ireece being the deathknell of the units as combat elements

that said honestly the Dark Age or succession wars would be the best time to do it.

my candidates-
Marauder- advertised as one of the most fearsome mechs of the SLDF (it's not) taking out Marauder factories and protecting your own would be the highest priority.  Post Jihad I would just have the marauder fall into disuse thanks to the presence of other better mechs among the houses (Hammerhands, Falconer, Penetrator, Defiance, Maelstrom, Perseus and Shugenja)

Goliath- honestly the least used of the phoneix mechs and always a niche machine, fans will not be too sad to see it go.  this would be a jihad casualty

the 55 ton Trifecta (Wolverine, Shadow Hawk, Griffin, and to a lesser extent Alfar and Gladiator)  put up or shut up time, I wanna see Starcorps or some other mutli house conglomorate to combine these mechs into a single 55 ton frame.  innovation taking the place of old standards.

I was actually extremely disappointed that there was never a canon 55 ton 5/8/5 IS OmniMech.  It would seem like such a no-brainer compared to the 4/6 up-tonned Blackjack we got.

I have absolutely no evidence to support it, but it's always been my pet theory that the Omnistarter and Omnijack were the last minute result of the Unseen decision to replace what was to be an OmniMech version of the Phoenix Hawk and the 55 ton trio.

I prefer the Omnistarter Anyway, and I would have honestly preffered an Omni-CentForcer... or Enfturion... whatever

Okay, I can understand the Enforcer/Centurion preference, but why would you prefer your Omni Phoenix Hawk to have hard-mounted flamers?   :o

I like the aesthetics more then the unseen Hawk (which I never liked)

plus as a fast reaction platform, being able to set fire to infantry, buildings, trees, small children etc in a 360 degree arc is awesome

The biggest stumbling block to get over isn't the Whammy, Maurader, the trio of 55 tonners or the Pixie, but that classic commander's Mech and it's cousin.

The Archer & The Thunderbolt.

that is probably the biggest stumbling block for you, cause for me the PP Archer sold me on the whole concept, and I ALWAYS hated to look of the TBolt, regardless of era.

The Archer is the quintissential Missile Support Mech, but there have been plenty of successors of the design both lighter and heavier, so it is a pick your money take your choice there.

as far as the thunderbolt, in terms of capability the Thunderbolt has been obsolete since 3058 in the timeline, thanks to mechs like the Grim Reaper, Gallowglas, Herculeas, Tempest, Cestus, Helios, Jinngau, Verfolger and the list goes on.
