Entries for Fanbook TRO:3145 The Periphery
« on: November 18, 2013, 03:13:18 PM »

With a lot of the boxes with computer stuff opened, if not unpacked, and my BT stuff still looking for a home in the man cave, I have roughly the first 10 of 20 entries finished.

The fluff for the book itself is a briefing document for a 'Periphery Alliance' to confront a possible deep Periphery group producing unknown units.

*Edit - Since I have the box working (my GOD its slow - I have to keep a book on the desk to read while it reacts) here's the ToC.

so are you seeking entries then?

Nope.  Stetching those fiction-writing muscles on something smaller than rewriting Introspection, the introductory fiction for my AU project.  This is something small I can do at work since I was without anything bigger than an IPad for the last couple weeks, but the the number of entries is getting too inconvenient to keep in my backpack with my lunch anymore, so I'm trying to type a couple up when I get too angry to sleep.   >:(  Been a couple times already this week, so I figured I might as well share 'em.

Please note - I'm writing fluff at work, without ready access to TM or TW.  I still haven't figured them out with paper and pencil yet, since I've gotten wary of trusting HMP to make them.  Nonetheless, some are done.  First up, the JarnFolk Infiltration Suit.

*Edit - No, this is not a canon setting.  The entries describe units common in the Periphery since the end of the Jihad.  The in-universe reason for this TRO is familiarization with units common among a Periphery-wide alliance defending against a growing frequency and number of pirate raids.  For the purpose of this project, a mysterious source is providing Mechs and vehicles to such groups.  I'm not working on an in-universe introductionexplaining this yet.  Sorry.

Quote
JarnFolk Infiltration Suit

ORIGIN

Discovered adrift with a failing emergency beacon in 3143 by the crew of the Raven Alliance JumpShip Void Raven in the deep Periphery, investigation of the mummified occupant has tentatively identified the suit as JarnFolk in origin, providing an intriguing glimpse into the feuds of the JarnFolk Great Families.

CAPABILITIES

Fully adapted to its environment, the suit offers extended power and life-support to support its purpose; covert operations against enemy JumpShips.  The Alliance Watch has concluded an operator would use the small SRB (Solid Rocket Booster) and enhanced thruster system to cover short distances between JarnFolk ships, depending upon a Stealth system apparently copied from a suit of Nighthawk Mk. XXI power armor of the Star League to remain undetected.
Upon reaching its target undetected, the suit can use either its dedicated Salvage arm to damage the exterior components or explosive charges to cripple or strand the vessel unless repairs can be made.  The suit also carries a basic, collapsible plastic airlock, allowing the operator to exit the suit and infiltrate his target without raising an alarm.
Most surprising of all, the suit features a concealed timer that activates a hidden circuit to disable the suit, killing the occupant, and wipes all logs not in permanent storage to remove incriminating evidence.  Having familiarized themselves with ComStar records of the JarnFolk, Watch operatives have concluded the suit is designed to give the occupant a “hero’s death” without the fear of sparking a feud.

BATTLE HISTORY

At this time, it remains uncertain if the former occupant of the suit succeeded in his mission.  Technicians and volunteer Watch operatives have experimented with the suit to determine the desirability of creating a version with Clan technology and the level of threat to Alliance shipping in the Periphery, with surprising results.

VARIANTS

Given the advanced technology inherent to the design, Watch analysts expect it to remain exceedingly rare, even amongst the JarnFolk, and no variants are expected.
Because of the inherent dishonor of such a role, no plans to manufacture such a suit exist at this time.  Confirmation of the suit’s existence and updated safety protocols to defend against their use have been circulated to civilian authorities, but its actual abilities have been kept confidential to prevent its spread.

NOTABLE TROOPERS

Warrior Daniel of the Alliance Watch, the senior test operator of the project, was unexpectedly killed during a long-endurance test under controlled conditions when a concealed mission clock activated the hidden circuit, disabling the suit and suffocating him.  After intense scrutiny, Technicians identified the cause and have concluded the reprogrammable timer would allow an operator to fulfill his mission, then activate an emergency beacon for retrieval after the occupant had died, killing him without fear of repercussion.

Naturally, almost everything else is on the box, waiting for me to find the missing cables.  I have an old copy of the Fiefdom of Randis' Templar MK II Medium Battle Armor, though.  I'm starting to type the Hanseatic League's Bridgehead Small Craft, but its one of the ones I haven't worked out the stats for yet.

Randis Templar Battlearmor

ORIGIN

The Templar PA(L), first conceived in 3115 by the Order’s Grand Knight in consultation with technicians and officers, has undergone several redesigns reflecting Randis’ growing technical and military sophistication.  In 3140, design work began on its successor, the Mk. II.
As the first domestic Medium Battlearmor produced by Warrior Arms of Randis, Engineers kept to the guidelines which had given the Mk. I Periphery-wide appeal; cost, reliability, and survivability.  So far, prototypes have performed well, attracting buyers willing to help finance expansion to the Warrior Arms plant.

CAPABILITIES

The Mk. II relies on impressive ground speed to provide mobility while remaining concealed, reaching speeds over 32.4 kph in tests.  To reduce vulnerability, engineers have managed to improve both quantity and quality of the suit’s armor, reaching its near-maximum to extend its battlefield lifetime.  Like the Mk. I, the Mk. II relies on the traditional small laser/machinegun combination to provide anti-armor and –personnel capabilities, although a Light has been substituted for the standard machinegun of the Mk. I.
The L-MG, capable of greater stand-off distance offers less damage to the enemy, but the Mk. II’s new primary weapon makes up for it.  That weapon is the MRM-1 launcher, with a 8-round magazine.  Its range and damage potential are not as high as some advanced Inner Sphere or Clan designs, but the ammunition is cheap and easy to manufacture while ensuring the Mk. II remains a threat as long as the armor holds out.

BATTLE HISTORY

Reaching production status in the near future, the prototypes have only experienced training exercises, although the number and variety of these have been impressive.  Offered an opportunity to evaluate the suit in simulated combat conditions, prospective buyers have sought to create incentives to reduce the asking price for the design; so far, the expert Troopers assigned to the prototypes have succeeded in each exercise, although the cost has sometimes been high.

<>  Trial examples <>

NOTABLE TROOPERS

Sergeant Evard Pope, First Battalion, Knights of Randis
One of the most vocal proponents of the proposed LRM variant, Evard has made a name for himself with the pinpoint accuracy of his suit’s LRM launcher.  His skills with the LRM, however, conceal his inexperience with kneecapping or Swarm attacks.

VARIANTS

Given the Mk II’s affinity for support, a LRM-equipped version is under consideration, although engineers argue that support is better off being supplied by larger, more mobile APCs or AFVs.

The temporarily finished Hanseatic League's Bridgehead Small Craft.  Until I can spend some time with TM trying to duplicate the description, this is what there is.

Quote
Hanseatic League Bridgehead Small Craft

ORIGIN

Despite having sufficient military assets to defend the League’s merchant traffic, the Hansa could only watch as Clan Goliath Scorpion arrived and revealed their role in the continued warfare in Neuvo Castille.  Rather than wait for the ax to fall, the League began a dramatic expansion further (down) in an attempt to escape the Imperio’s wrath.
As part of the process, the League designed and began limited production of the Bridgehead, a Small Craft capable of carrying a pair of vehicles and small Infantry detachment to escort merchants attempting to open the smaller but more numerous markets of the more prosperous Periphery states in 3098.

CAPABILITIES

Oriented towards ensuring the safety of its merchants from hostile natives, the Bridgehead is barely capable of self-defense in space or in the air.  The limited fuel supply is rarely an issue, as the design is intended to be launched in orbit and rejoin its DropShip after the trade mission has been concluded.
Grounded, the Bridgehead offers its passengers a secure base of operations with a choice of vehicles (normally ground or VTOL transport).  Able to carry small quantities of trade goods to help attract new buyers, the design is able to land at small or unprepared landing sites and is considered generally capable of performing its role in satisfactory fashion.

BATTLE HISTORY

The earnest attempts to open new markets and the lack of available force has led to only a few standoffs with angry crowds since the Bridgehead’s deployment.  Most often, a member of the small crew violates some local law or custom, and after negotiating and levying a suitable fine or punishment the crewman is normally abandoned on the planet to fend for himself.  Not surprisingly, such incidents are suitably rare.
In space or within atmosphere, the Bridgehead normally surrenders when confronted rather than risk destruction.

VARIANTS

Since its introduction, the Bridgehead has become surprisingly popular among diplomats, mid-level corporate executives, and pirates, with the design licensed to several small producers across the Periphery
The most common variant, the Bridgehead-E reduces its cargo capacity to provide one or two luxurious VIP suites for the comfort of its passengers.  The Bridgehead-P removes almost all of the craft’s amenities and uses commonly available Stealth armor to assist in covert insertions, using air-launched WiGE APCs to attack a target at a distance before retreating into orbit to rejoin its DropShip.  Extremely rare, the Bridgehead-Q is a unique vessel that strips the craft to its bare bones before using the resulting space and tonnage for armor and concealed weapons to surprise an opponent.

Thanks.  I went looking for unusual items or explanations, reasoning it out on paper before typing.  Since this is smaller than the four book AU project, it gives me a chance to use the lessons learned from the bigger project on something I hope to finish by January.

Naturally, I have to work it out on paper, with a couple of drafts each, but it works.  If I finally get the box hooked up, I'll put up the page count and table of contents.  So far, it looks like I might have time on the weekend.  Chaos has returned my to the house with a new 11-month old foster child.  Some people should just be sterilized.

...Here's the entry for the Nike, a Primitive ASF - Note, since I don't own HMAero, I still haven't had time to stat it out.  But this is how it will go.

Quote
Marion Hegemony Nike NKE-01(P) Medium ASF

ORIGIN

Designed by WoB engineers during the splinter faction’s alliance with Caesar Sean O’Reilly, the Nike was to become the Hegemony’s first domestically produced ASF.  After his overthrow the design was shelved as the Hegemony lacked the technical expertise needed for production.  The uncertainty spread by the Jihad and the so-called ‘RetroTech’ used by several nations inspired the Hegemony’s new Caesar, Cassius O’Reilly, to curtail civilian manufacturing to produce a Primitive version of the design for sale and to equip the Legions.

CAPABILITIES

Uncertain of their own needs and abilities, Hegemony engineers sought to design a general-purpose ASF that sacrificed weapons for the equivilant speed and armor of modern units.  Depending on the common VLAR 300 fusion engine to produce a maximum of 4.5 G’s of thrust, the Nike depends on the maximum practical amount of standard armor to protect the Hegemony’s pilots.  Restricted to the use of antiquated single Heatsinks, the Nike supports a nose-mounted Pontiac 50 (also found on the Gladius hovertank) with two tons of ammunition with single wing-mounted Medium Lasers as backups.

BATTLE HISTORY

The Nike’s first appearance in combat came in 3097, intercepting a pirate Union DropShip escorted by a pair of Heavy ASF over the Hegemony world of Illyria.  As one Flight engaged the defending ASF in orbit, the remainder of the Hegemony’s Ala Caeruleo (Blue Wing) scrambled from their bases to engage the DropShip with Air-to-Air missiles.  Returning to defend their DropShip, the pirates escorted the crippled Union back into orbit where the surviving Nikes rejoined their Wing to harass the enemy fighters.  Denied the opportunity to land and refuel, they were forced to eject and were captured while the Union made its escape.
Since early 3099, Wings of the Primitive fighter have appeared in Wing strength across the Hegemony serving in multiple roles, but always relating to a defensive role.  The Legions have also benefitted from the design, although the lack of available transport has prevented it from appearing in the required numbers to be effective in an offensive role.

VARIANTS

The modern NKE-01 Nike uses modern technology such as a VLAR 300 XL engine, double Heatsinks, and Ferro-Fibrous armor.  With the spread of Reflective armor, the –01 carries a LB10-X with three tons of ammunition and a heavy wing-mounted laser battery to back-up the Autocannon and for ground attack, providing a single Medium Laser to protect the rear arc.  The –01’s most controversial component is the Blakist C3i module,  salvaged from Blakist units afte the Jihad.  Unable to produce the sophisticated electronics, a second variant, the –02, uses the tonnage to equip the fighter with a pair of double Heatsinks and a half ton of additional armor.

FAMOUS PILOTS

Legatus Thaddeus ‘Thud’ Friesen, Ret.
A career Nike pilot, ‘Thud’ flew the updated –01 variant for most of his career.  In most cases, the Legatus preferred to negate or ‘mission kill’ opposing AeroSpace forces to reduce casualties among the green Hegemony pilots.  Now an Instructor at the Alphard Air Academy, Thaddeus reminds his students the most valuable component of their fighter is the life of the pilot behind the controls.

Oh, and the ToC has been added to the first entry.

*Edit - And about half of the finished handwritten sheets are MIA.  Typical for me.   :-[  The ones remaining to be typed at this point are the TC Stealthed Observation Shuttle, FoR Green Knight, FitC Ram, RC Able Medium Tank, Pirate Brigand-X, MH Cucurum VTOL.

Finished copies of the FS BattleSat II and Pirate Fat Man WiGE are MIA also.  Single-sheet rough drafts are still available.  Neither is much use, there's only about two paragraghs of 'Origin' each, but oh well.  I hope to have the rest of the loose sheets typed in by tomorrow night, and then start looking at Gimp to do art & layout.

Maybe put up a thread at the official site, too, tomorrow.  Maybe.

With the Grey Cup all but won, I managed to sneak downstairs under the pretext of 'watching the kids'.

So, here's the RoR Green Knight.  No stats for this one, either, yet.

Quote
Fiefdom of Randis Green Knight

ORIGIN

By 3100, Randis IV bore no resemblance to the struggling world of less than a century ago; attracted to an independent world virtually immune to the pirate raids plauging the rest of the Periphery, the planet industry was untouched by the Jihad and its population skyrocketed in the final decades of the 31st century.
By 3127, with the majority of the Order offworld Randis suffered a devastating series of organized raids, as pirates sought to loot the planet in return for the continued efforts of Grand Knight Arthur Novaid to exterminate pirate operations within the near Periphery.  Realizing the need to keep their homes secure, the citizens of Randis created the Randis Militia, a Company-sized force composed almost entirely of Primitive designs.  To provide a dedicated command unit for the expanding force, financial backers authorized Warrior Arms of Randis to design and build a Primitive version of the Star Lague’s Black Knight.

CAPABILITIES

Clearly designed to allow commanders to remain in the field as long as possible, the so-called Green Knight carries its design limit of armor protection and utilizes a system of armored components for increased durability.  Limited to 54 kph but with a Jump capability of 90 meters, the exclusively energy armament easily overwhelms its limited heat dissipation systems.  The design team therefore added a massive ax, forcing enemy units to remain outside point-blank range.

BATTLE HISTORY

Because both Militia and Knights jointly garrison Randis, and most of the Militia’s experience came in training and operations with the more elite Knight, the design was largely unknown until May of 3134.  Assigned to sentry duty while the Knights pursued a Lance-sized force of pirates, Lt. Randy Roberts of the Militia was cut off by the remainder of the Company commanded by an ECM-equipped Thunderbolt-7SE.
As the rest of the raiders rushed the camp and the remainder of his Lance, Roberts managed to fire his lasers at the nearest DropShip, risking shutdown as its heat spiked.  Badly attenuated, the alert crew deduced the situation immediately and sounded an alarm, blunting the effectiveness of the attack.  Emboldened by the state of the Green MechWarrior, the Thunderbolt closed to aim point-black at the Green Knight’s cockpit, only to retreat as the Armored Cockpit prevented a quick victory.  Despite losses, the design was considered a success.
Since that time, the ‘Mech has frequently been singled out in the hope of routing green Militia forces.  In almost every case, the design has managed to survive the attention, although technicians bemoan assignment to the unit believing it to be a ‘Trouble Magnet’.

VARIANTS

As a Primitive design, no variants were build beyond temporary field refits to accommodate battle damage.  The design has since been replaced as more advanced command ‘Mechs have become available, although it continues to serve exclusively among the Militia and Knights.

FAMOUS MECHWARRIORS

The son of a Randis businessman, Randy purchased his Green Knight as scrap through his father’s business contacts.  Despite moving on to a modern HawkWolf-4F after taking command of the Militia’s ‘A’Company, Randy has been using it to train his daughter, Britney.  The ‘Mech’s usual camoflauge patters have lone since been replaced by a bright pink paint scheme and the nickname, ‘Dolly’.

...Now for something completely different, but also with no stats, boo!, the Taurian Concordat's Stealthed Observation Shuttle.

Quote
Taurian Concordat Stealthed Observation Shuttle

ORIGIN

Brought face-to-face with the horrifying potential for deliberate attempts to use DropShips as weapons of mass destruction, the TDF began to address the possibility of future attacks in 3077 as the Alliane began overwhelming the Blake Protectorate’s defenders.  Investigators and scientists consulted on the matter eventually agreed that the keys to preventing future attacks was early detection and the ability to focus sufficient force to destroy or divert the attackers.
However, after the formation of the Calderon Protectorate, the solution also needed to be something the Taurian budget could afford.  With the need for secrecy to prevent terrorists from taking additional precaustions to conceal themselves, Protector Boris Tharn ordered modifications to several dozen obsolete Small Craft to turn them into long-duration observation platforms, using the radiation emitted by a DropShip’s transit drive to detect them.

CAPABILITIES

Because of the variety of Small Craft designs chosen for the project, the TDF established several benchmarks to be met by all units assigned to such duty, among them sophisticated sensor and observation equipment, supplies and consumables for a 45-60 day deployment, dual-occupancy cabins, and enough zero-G exercise equipment to prevent heath problems.

BATTLE HISTORY

Since its inception, the TDF have avoided revealing the existence of the SOS program, even to the extent of allowing pirate attacks on Concordat possessions to go unchallenged.  During such circumstances, these shuttles use carefully hidden orbital caches to extend mission durations until relieved.

FAMOUS SMALL CRAFT AND CREW

Captain Norman Buck and the crew of the Raindancer were victims of an overzealous Taurian military early in the program.  Suffering several quipment failures and contaminated stores, a series of poorly-worded requests by officials for updates revealed the natures of the difficulties aboard the craft.  Infuriated, the crew began sending falsified reports claiming an attack was underway.  As military usits went to high alert, the civilian population began to panic as unconfirmed reports leaked to the media.  Eventually locating the Rain Dancer on a ballistic path approaching New Vallis, Captain Buck passed off the scare an an unannounced readiness drill.
Besides the Captain and crew of the Raindancer, nearly thirty others (some of them volunteers with no connection to real events were publicly disciplined and removed from the TDF and public service to protect the program.

Well, its been more than a couple days, but I have a little time this weekend if I let my chores slide.  I think I deserve a bit of a break, its been brutal.  Here's a couple more.

Quote
Able Wheeled Medium Tank

ORIGIN

When Grey Monday left the Rim Collection struggling with the increased rates of piracy, Major Mitchell Able pressed for the creation of a “people’s tank” to assist in the defense of the nation.  Consulting with engineering experts at Defiance-Kwangjong-ni to create a design capable of domestic production, the resulting vehicle was named to honor the contributions of the former mercenaries to the defense of the Collection.

CAPABILITIES

Designed to traverse the widest possible variety of terrain at a reasonable rate of speed, the Able is capable of limited amphibious operation.  The design suffers from the normal problems associated with budget-conscious projects, in particular the absence of a turret.  Although the front-mounted MRM system provides sufficient stand-off range against slower opponents, the Able’s backup machineguns are insufficient to protect its flanks and rear from faster and more maneuverable opponents.

BATTLE HISTORY

Introduced in 3136, the Able has become a widespread support vehicle in the Collection and neighboring Periphery states as Hansa Traders have become involved in its distribution.  That availability has been both a benefit and a curse, as self-reliant communities initially found their small forces overrun one town or city at a time to little effect.  Looking to help eliminate piracy in their region of the Periphery, Able’s Aces (with the support of the Collection government) has provided surrounding worlds with experienced armor officers recruited from the Lyran Commonwealth to help train inexperienced buyers.
Hailing from _____, the crew of the Bite Me ambushed a pirate force raiding the planet’s single spaceport, luring a Brigand-X into the surrounding warehouse district and killing it.  Advancing with the remainder of its Lance and a small contingent of infantry the defenders began harassing fire on pirates attempting to empty the warehouses, forcing the remaining pirates to eliminate the defenders before looting the warehouses.  They were overwhelmed by the rest of the Company firing from ambush, which advanced on the port and forcing the surrender of the pirate Leopard with massed fire before it could escape.
Smaller groups of volunteers have been ‘adopted’ by Aces personnel, rotating to neighboring worlds on an irregular basis, with mixed results.  The complete destruction of the Millar Mining and Excavation (MME) security force by pirates on Broken Promise brought the rest of the small communities and a small group of Aces volunteers with a pair of Nike-P ASF together with the approval of the Collection President.  The eventual return of the Bridgehead and its WiGE APCs in ’41 found the defenders better trained and eager to avenge their friends, massacring the pirate forces from ambush and capturing the rare Small Craft.

VARIANTS

The AB-4(LRM), with a more advanced (and expensive) turret-mounted Coventry Star Fire LRM-15 to support the Aces ‘Mech units in the field is produced in limited quantities for export and domestic use.

Quote
Fitveldt Ram RM-09

ORIGIN

When vital parts and equipment were stolen soon after delievery on _____ in the Fitveldt Coalition, desperation brought several citizens with personal hover vehicles together to defend their world.  Without armor or weapons, the group used ramming attacks to cripple several lighter units that might have escaped their pursuers.
The casualties from the attacks notwithstanding, Fitveldt military officers sat up and noticed the cost/Benefit analysis’ of the attempts, putting together a proposal to create a Light unit with military technology to act as a scout/harasser while preserving the option of a physical attack.  Affordable by most small communities, the Ram was put into limited production in 3013.

CAPABILITIES

Built around one of the largest commercially available engines in the Coalition, the Ram reaches speeds up to 150 kph, giving the charging attack of the Ram surprising force.  In order to survive such an attack, the Ram is one of the few vehicles in the Coalition to use Heavy Ferro-Fibrous armor as standard issue to better protect the crew with the majority of the armor concentrated in the foreward arc.
When possible, the Ram will use its supporting LRM launcher to fire Thunder or Smoke munitions to delay or impede enemy forces and degrade the effectiveness of enemy fire, although its primary purpose is to physically ram a target from ambush.

BATTLE HISTORY

When members of the _____ Speed Club chose to use their vehicles to attack a pirate force in 3111, they suffered nearly 100% casualties.  With that in mind, crews assigned to the 1st Citizens Militia took advantage of their stocks of Thunder munitions to mine trails through _____’s Carson Forrest rather than expose themselves to enemy fire.  The resulting damage forced several scouts to retire with heavy armor damage and crippled a pirate Warhammer.  Lamed and blinded without scouts, heavier units of the Militia managed to intercept them short of their DropShip and force their surrender.
Growing familiarity and confidence in the Ram’s preferred attack resulted in the first recorded use of its ramming attack on the Coalition planet of _____.  Intercepting a pirate raid short of the small mining community of Spalling, Militia units attacked from ambush to successfully cripple three of the four ‘Mechs before firing Smoke rounds to mark their positions.  Under harassing fire from the surviving Rams and their target identified, the remainder of the raiders broke off their attack.
Since 3118, however, the Ram has had fewer successful ramming engagements as pirates have grown accustomed to dealing with the hovertank, forcing it to continue contributing to the defense of the Coalition as a scout and harasser.

FAMOUS PILOTS

Sergeants Ben Frasier and Jerrod Sybel, _____ Speed Club
Sole survivors of the civilian racing club that inspired the Ram, Frasier and Sybel contine to advocate aggressive ramming attacks as the fastest way to cripple an opponent.  Still serving in the 1st Citizen’s Militia each crew has several successful attacks to their credit.

VARIANTS

Due to the physical constraints of the Ram’s role and a scarcity of advanced electronics, limited numbers of the RM-10 have been produced.  The hovertank is equipped as an advanced scout, using both a Beagle AP and Guardian ECM to assist locating the enemy and surviving such an encounter.
Sporadic attempts have been made to create an APC based on the Ram, but the Coalitions’s limited resources have prevented engineers from putting such a design into production.

Re: Entries for Fanbook TRO:3145 The Periphery
« Reply #13 on: February 09, 2014, 02:04:13 AM »

...And another one.  The Brigand is an important entry; supposedly, a mysterious force is supplying pirates and probably doing some raiding of their own, prompting the Periphery to form an alliance to defend themselves and find out what's going on.  The Canopians are notably excluded, due to their ties with House Liao.  Kind of odd given their traditional emphasis on diplomacy, but whatever.

Quote
Pirate Brigand-X LDT-5

ORIGIN

The creation of Paula “Lady Death’ Trevayne, the Brigand was the first known case of a unit produced by a pirate group.  Supplied from a number of illegal sources, the ‘Mech’s production facilities and blueprints were never located or destroyed and the design eventually faded into disuse.  First identified in late 3133, amidst the general resurgence of pirate activity in the Anit-Spinward and Rimward regions of the Periphery the updated Brigand seems to have been selected by an unknown group for mass production based on its origin and reputation.  Of more concern, however, is the use of non-standard tools and dies in its manufacture and the lack of recognizable or readable markings on its components.

CAPABILITY

â€˜Mechs have always been preferred by pirates for durability and versatility, as well as the terror value of such a machine on the public.  This new version utilizes a MASC/Supercharger combination to evade pursuit at up to two hundred kph, while Stealth armor and ECM make it even harder to hit.  Its offensive weapons are limited, but consist almost entirely of arm-mounted weapons as a form of primitive OmniTechnology, leading to several common variants outlined below.  Taken as a whole, the design is heavily oriented to hit-and-run or support missions rather than front-line combat.

BATTLE HISTORY

Unknown units as far back as June of 3122 have recently been positively identified as Brigands by survivors and examination of physical evidence, with the first confirmed report from the Logan League in June of 3122 where a Lance of unidentified pirate ‘Mechs sporting energy weapons and a variety of anti-personnel weapons killed most of the occupants of the village of Norwalk and the neighboring mine before escaping.
In 3133, III Legio of the HAF responded to a raid on Islington, an important manufacturing world.  Aware the planet’s factories and urban areas would be well-protected, the pirates attacked several isolated mines and seaports where substantial amounts of refined ore were stockpiled.  Released from perimeter patrols, Brigands set fire to most of their targets and the surrounding countryside before aggressive Pilots of Ala Viridis crippled one of them with an armor breach to the head

VARIANTS

Utilizing arm-mounted weapons exlusively, several common variants have been identified.  A specialized scout variant, the –5R replaces the original weapon suite with a Bloodhound Active Probe, Medium ER-Pulse laser, and Remote Sensor Dispensor able to place up to thirty remote sensors to monitor large areas.  The Brigand sports two long-range support variants; the –5M carries a ER-Medium laser and five RL-10s in each arm, while the –5D sports a ER-PPC and Capacitor in the right arm.
Intelligence also suggests the existence of a rare cargo-carrying variant, the –5C, intended to secure valuable loot in rough terrain.  Able to Jump 120 meters, the design forfeits the MASC and Supercharger in favor of carrying a full six tons of Stealth armor and three tons of cargo in each arm.

NOTABLE MECHWARRIORS

Maxie
Admitting to no name other ‘Maxie’, the MechWarrior piloting a Brigand-X5 captured by the HAF escaped death multiple times to become the sole intelligence source on the mysterious suppliers of the design to pirates.  The destruction of his ‘Mech’s suicide bomb and escape from drowning provided interrogators a description of being directed to an unknown system with single inhabitable planet to recover an entire company of sealed Brigand-Xs with tons of parts and supples in sealed crates.  Despite the automatic death sentence earned under Hegemony law, Maxie was turned over to the still-forming Periphery Alliance Intelligence branch.  He has since been found dead in his cell.  An investigation is still ongoing.
