What if: Heavy lasers, HAGs and ATMs, Oh my!
« on: December 04, 2014, 11:17:46 AM »

Hear me out on this.  The clans come in 3049 just as they always had, but thier weapons technology is different.  Autocannons, ER and Pulse Lasers and Missiles are not significantly different from Star Leauge interpretations, but Heavy lasers, Advanced Tactical Missiles, and HAGs were developed and on frontline machines had almost completely replaced this older tech.

how do you think this would have effected Operation REVIVAL?

Not much as the problem with Operation Revival was always a combination of raw numbers, logistics and politics and never a problem of advanced tech or of the quality of the warriors piloting the 'Mechs.

Well it is a stretch to see the Clans go off the beaten path with high tech stuff. It is kind of their charm to have Large Pulse Lasers for example that are smaller, weigh less, go further, and do more damage. Yikes! ;)

Heavy Lasers and Advanced Tactical Missiles seem to have less range to me but even more striking power. If that is the rule for the Clans it makes them much more in your face then canon. They could always kill you from range before now they still have the speed advantage but now they gotta get in closer and when they do, YIKES!

Afraid I am not that familiar with Hyper Assault Gauss to tell you their impact.

Widespread HAG deployment would cut down on the effectiveness of IS Air strikes to the point of no point.  Those beasties are nasty against the airborne elements shame about their weight and limited ammo but I still like them.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

ATMs with ER ammo out range LRMs

I guess my whole thought process is that instead of the ranged duelists that they are the kind that revel in close combat and maximized damage, and whether combined with thier speed advantage would that have changed the outcome of several key battles.

numbers and logistics won the day several times, but the flip side of that is that IS Strategy relied on drawing the clans in close to negate thier ER Energy Weapons range advantage.  this thought process would make in close thier most dangerous place to be.

This tactic was not the only thing that worked but I am sure the Inner Sphere would find a new way of fighting that would negate the advantages enjoyed by the Clans.

If used with the other weapons, it would give the Clans increased tactical flexibility and nasty, but I don't think much would change overall.

even with the more classic clan weaponry being Star League equivilent rather then clan tech?

I just gotta re iterate that, all other weapons aside from Heavy lasers, HAGs and ATMs would be identical to inner sphere counter parts, so 5 ton ER Large lasers and no ER medium or smalls, LRM 20s that weigh 10 tons etc etc.

Wow that would suck for the Clans.  I would argue that SRM and LRM launchers might be considered obsolete if ATMs have been around.

ATMs cannot do indirect fire and in that regard LRMs will never be obsolete. Though, given that indirect fire could be considered dishonorable (as it requires a spotter), I could see ATMs completely replacing LRMs in a conservative clan force.

That's actually pretty much hitting the Clans with a massive IDIOT BALL  to have only the basic advanced SL gear

Clans should have the full range of IS   UAC's and LBXs, ER lasers and pulse lasers, Streak SRMs

As in:      UAC 2-20, LBX 2-20, ER Lasers S - M - L, Pulse Lasers S - M - L,  Streak SRM 2 - 6,  Streak LRM 5-20, Artemis IV for missiles,

All using  IS stats
