What is your bid? [Thought excercise]
« on: October 27, 2012, 11:07:21 PM »

Okay, a thought exercise here, gentlemen.  We have a brand new Cluster of Clan troops . . . with a kick.  Every OmniMech in the Cluster is the same base model; same goes for OmniFighters.  I am using my own Mongrel II design for this.  45-ton OmniMech, moving 7/11/7, with 13 tons of pod space and maximum armor.

The 501st Striker Cluster is organized as follows:

Cluster Command:
Star Command One:  Mongrel II-Prime, Mongrel II-A, Mongrel II-B, Mongrel II-C, and Mongrel II-D

Trinary Alpha:
Star Alpha One:  Mongrel II-Prime, Mongrel II-A, Mongrel II-B, Mongrel II-C, and Mongrel II-D
Star Alpha Two:  Mongrel II-Prime, Mongrel II-A, Mongrel II-B, Mongrel II-C, and Mongrel II-D
Star Alpha Three:  25 x Elemental (APG variant)

Trinary Beta:
Star Beta One:  Mongrel II-Prime, Mongrel II-A, Mongrel II-B, Mongrel II-C, and Mongrel II-D
Star Beta Two:  Mongrel II-Prime, Mongrel II-A, Mongrel II-B, Mongrel II-C, and Mongrel II-D
Star Beta Three:  25 x Elemental (APG variant)

Trinary Gamma:
Star Gamma One:  Mongrel II-Prime, Mongrel II-A, Mongrel II-B, Mongrel II-C, and Mongrel II-D
Star Gamma Two:  Mongrel II-Prime, Mongrel II-A, Mongrel II-B, Mongrel II-C, and Mongrel II-D
Star Gamma Three:  25 x Elemental (APG variant)

Trinary Delta:
Star Delta One:  Mongrel II-Prime, Mongrel II-A, Mongrel II-B, Mongrel II-C, and Mongrel II-D
Star Delta Two:  Mongrel II-Prime, Mongrel II-A, Mongrel II-B, Mongrel II-C, and Mongrel II-D
Star Delta Three:  25 x Elemental (APG variant)

Binary Epsilon:
Star Epsilon One:  10 x Batu (various configurations) [EDITED FROM VISIGOTH]
Star Epsilon Two:  10 x Batu (various configurations)

Total Strength:  45 OmniMechs; 100 Elementals; 20 OmniFighters.

Transport:  5 x Union-C, 2 x Carrier, 2 x Odyssey

All right.  That is the force you are facing off against.  Veteran quality across the board (Clan veteran).  What do you bring?  And yes, I am aware the entire Cluster moves at 7/11/7 (when the Elementals are riding the OmniMechs) and that there is NOTHING heavier than a medium-weight design.  What would you need to defeat this Cluster?

My initial bid would be the Wolves 352nd Assault Cluster, as per CWSB, then allow my sub-commanders to bid down from there.

I think the 4th Wolf Guards Cluster would be a better choice.
55 Mechs
100 Elementals
20 Aerospace Fighters
2 Star Lord Jumpships
1 Union Command, 2 Union, 5 Leopard and 1 Titan Dropships

The slightly larger 'Mech complement and heavier weight on average gives you room to cut your bid down. But the real selling point IMHO is that 2 Stars of the Command Trinary are made up of Naga. Against Elementals with APGRs, I'd want the chance to thin them out with artillery strikes (and it wouldn't hurt when it came to hitting fast moving 'Mechs) and salvo of 20 Arrow IV missiles has a respectable foot-print.

I always bid the 352nd - Accept No Substitutes!

Besides, bidding against different opponents with the same unit is the real skill. I'll make a more detailed second bid later.

I love the 352nd myself Blacknova but if I am Wolf (who I guess is the bidder) I would go with a cluster from Delta Galaxy (I'm talking pre-Refusal War) who are skilled at highly mobile war like this cluster. The 4th Striker Cluster built by and commanded by a former Scorpion would be a cunning opponent. For other Clans I too would be a Striker Cluster to best match your capabilities.

1st Nova Cat Guards, or 1st Nova Cat Lancers

I'll take

a Star of Nova Cat As with ER Large Lasers and Targeting Computers
I'll take a Star of Supernova Assault BattleMechs more lasers there
a star of Wright Dezgra

a Star of Shadow Cat Primes OmniMechs for the mobility and killing power
a Star Shadow Hawk IIC 5 for anti-elemental duty
a Star Ocelot 2 for the sniping power

Supporting these I'll have
2 Stars of Thunderbird Heavy Battle Armour
2 Stars of Rabid Battle Armour

Split these one Star Rabids 1 Star Thunderbirds together.

Finally
I'll have 10 SM1 Tank Destroyers

Total force: 30 Mech, 100 Battle Armour, 10 Vehicles (I'm not an aerotech player so I can't really comment on fighters) so whatever would work to match numbers

I will go for the win and ignore Zellbrigen and remain on the edge I entered with the majority of my force.  All my units except for the Wrights and the SM1s will be ordered to engage at maximum range combine fire and snipe them to death as they approach.  PPC, ER Laser and Gauss fire will cut down on your approach quickly especially when combined.

The Battle Armour will be mixed in equally with the Mechs ready to support each other against the Elemental forces.

The SM1s will patrol the back field lending their machine guns against the Battle Armour and their Autocannons against fast moving Mongrels, you jump into the backfield I'll gun you down with Ultra AC fire.

The Wright Dezgra will be on orders to go out and hunt, working together moving as fast as possibly they will target individual Mechs moving on all the time.  With cover fire from the rest of the unit I'll be looking forward to the salvage.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Any Clan or the IS . . . basically what forces would you take to win against a cluster where everything moves at 7-11-7 (if the Elementals are riding the OmniMechs).

Exactly.  I wanted to see how well a Cluster built around a single type of OmniMech could do . . . even though they are all mediums (45-tonners), their speed and maneuverability will make them a tough foe to face off against.  Plus, it streamlines logistics . . . just like the SLDF, with having to have spares for just one type of engine, one type of gyro, the same actuators, the sensors, etc., etc., etc.  Sure, it lacks the incredible firepower of Clan heavies and assaults, but on the other hand it has far more firepower than any other formation of its speed.
