What's most important from the 3rd Succession War era?

Is it the characters? The idea of a world that has already moved on, as Roland might say? The knight-errant concept of the Mechwarrior? Or is it the tech level?

I've been giving some thought to some of my own issues with the era, and wondering if you can keep "what makes it work" for a number of folks without being limited to exactly as it exists. Can you still have Mechwarrior Knights, even if they're using something high-tech? If 'Mechs themselves are still rare, can you play about with the conventional force sizes and still keep the feel? I don't have a specific direction I'm heading currently, just wondering what some of the fans think.

I think high tech items don't necessarily influence the Knight-errant feel of the Third Succession War. I think the major influence is availability. BattleMechs during the Third Succession Wars were rare (well, if you can believe it - just about everything was "rare" to a certain extent).

IMO I think that's the ace when it comes to recreating a Third Succession War "feel" with tech changes.

Are the same characters and personalities necessary? Do you need a Takashi or a Janos? How much do you think you can change before losing the feel of the era?

I think you can change all of it. It's the physical realities of the setting that I think impart the most flavor, followed by those broad feudal concepts ingrained in every Successor State.

Keep to the Third Succession War "yard sticks" of scarcity and dwindling supply, and you can play with just about anything.

I did not like the 3rd war setting until vehicles came into play bolstering small mech forces.  then it all seemed slightly more plausible

I'd say the limited stylized warfare that was established by the MechLords of the InnerSphere. 120+ years of Mech duels, salvaged tech, dispossession, and all that other fun stuff.  ;)

Inner Sphere Tak, not InnerSphere! Two words, not one. :P (Sorry for hijacking the thread Dread. Please take it back.)

I always liked the loose parallels between Zellbringen and the pseudo-dueling of the Third Succession War. Chock it up to a bastardization of the Ares Conventions, Feudal tendencies and a limited number of BattleMechs.

So you feel that you couldn't pull off that feel with all 'Mechs being more advanced but rare? (Similar to what you see with the proto-factions in the Dark Age, but not exactly the same.)

For what makes the 3rd SW the 3rd SW is the scavenger mentality.  The idea that you can't easily build replacement mechs or even parts. I wouldn't mind having some advanced tech items available- it adds to the feel of things declining.  The fact that many mechs are patchwork nightmares held together by spit and prayer.  The idea of "Life is cheap, mechs are expensive".  People fighting over scraps of technology.

Thanks for the input everybody. I have this vague idea of an AU floating around and wondering whether it fits better with a 3rd or 4th SW tone...or somewhere in between.

Per the extinction dates, a fair amount of advanced tech was still kicking in the middle of the 30th century.  Scavenger culture had doubtless already kicked in, but the 3rd War featured L2 tech for at least half its length.  It just couldn't be replaced when destroyed.

I meant "advanced" as a BattleMech, a JumpShip or DropShip can be when compared to a rifle or a tank.
