What would you call Clan Training Clusters?
« on: June 13, 2016, 09:21:51 PM »

Hey gang, as part of my latest project I've begun to think of what each Clan would call a Training Cluster. Now I know that only Jade Falcon and Steel Viper really field such units in combat. The Falcons of course call theirs Eyrie after their namesakes nests while the Vipers named theirs Newts presumably for their young although that is just a guess. What would the others call their units if in fact they had them and lets for the sake of this thread say they do. ;) Below is a list of the 15 other Clans with some suggestions or guesses based on the name of their young, home, or group. Love to hear what you think!

Blood Spirit –
Burrock –
Cloud Cobra - Hatchling (Young)
Coyote – Whelp or Pup (Young)
Diamond Shark – Pup (Young), Tank (Enclosure), Frenzy or School (Group)
Fire Mandrill –
Ghost Bear – Cub (Young)
Goliath Scorpion –
Hell's Horses – Colt (Young)
Ice Hellion –
Nova Cat –
Smoke Jaguar – Cub (Young)
Snow Raven – Hatchling (Young), Roost (Nest), Corax
Star Adder – Hatchling (Young)
Wolf – Whelp or Pup (Young)

Goliath Scorpion – Instar - could be used for CB as well
Hell's Horses – Colt (Young)
Ice Hellion – Squall
Nova Cat – ProtoCat Cluster, as in ProtoStar that becomes a star and later Novas.

Cloud Cobra - Nest Cluster?
Coyote – Coyote Pack Cluster?
Hell's Horses – Hell's Foal Cluster?
Ice Hellion – Hellion Foal Cluster?
Nova Cat – i presume Cub as they are a Feline based clan as well as the Jaguars.  Nova Pride Cluster maybe?
Smoke Jaguar – Jaguar Pride Cluster maybe?
Snow Raven –Roost Cluster sounds good.
Star Adder – Neolates Cluster?
Wolf – Wolf Pack Cluster?

Baby snakes are commonly referred to as snakelets. Newly born snakes are called neolates, while newly hatched snakes are called hatchlings. A group of snakes is called a nest.

A baby horse is called a foal. A baby female is called a filly-foal and a baby male is called a colt-foal. Once they are weaned they are called "foal," "filly," and "colt," respectively until three years old, when they become "horse," "mare," and "stallion," (or "gelding") respectively.

Why not make a generic name like Cadets (a bad example I know) and make only a few having specific names?

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Please jeep them coming.

Ice I believe Falcon Cadets for examples are referred to as Hatchlings and Trainers are called Falconers. A few novels may have covered this issue and I'd love to codify it all.

So I should list three goals for each Clan now.
Cadet or Sibkin name
Trainer name
Cadre Training Cluster name

Clan Wolf doesn't use names for their trainers.  at least none i've seen in the books.

honestly most of the behind the scenes of the Clans is unkown, except the scientist class are glorified weapons engineers or  design engineers or even geneticist.  laborer caste runs the full gambit of civilian work from sewer cleaner to artist with nothing set aside for wasteful expenditures such as music, music videos, any visual art that doesn't promote the clan.

I just want to make you guys aware of a similar thread I started on the big boards to obtain canon information on this topic.

Hell's Horses calls their cadets Colts.
Smoke Jaguars calls their cadets Kits and their instructors Kitmasters.
Ghost Bears calls their cadets Cubs and their instructors Bruins or Bruinmasters. (German language novel)
Nova Cat calls their cadets Kittens and their instructors Kittenmasters (same novel but I don't like this one)
Coyote calls their instructors Pack Masters.

I am inclined to agree with roosterboy who mentioned an overlooked mystical aspect to Nova Cat training which we could apply despite the German language novel.

Just to comment on a few of the non canon suggestions made by wolfcannon and Blacknova.

I really like the Pride Cluster name for either the Smoke Jaguars or the Nova Cats, fits well.

Instar for either Burrock or Goliath Scorpion works very well.

I also love Spark for the Fire Mandrill cadets!

I know but this doesn't mean it is the rule.

And for trainers of a snake related Clan, what about Snake Charmer? Obviously you must replace Snake by the name of the trainees.

Quite right but I like the concept and wanted to explore it.

What do you think Ice, Star Adder or Steel Viper. I went with the snake motif for both.

for snakes i would use the nest cluster, as to the reference i found on answer.com.

i thought the vipers used newts for their training cluster?

i can see the Horse's calling the cadets colts, and the Jaguar's using kit for the cadets.  The Ghost Bears makes sense as well but the Nova Cats, that is just wrong on so many levels.  Kits or Cubs would make more sense.

The vision master of the Nova Cats is the Oathmaster (other Clan's Loremaster)

I don't think that the Cats would have the mystical side in their initial training

The Cats mystical side develops as the warrior develops.  They only really enter the Vision Quest after they have collected "vineers" souvenirs taken from battlefields or significant parts of their lives.

As for a name for the Cluster maybe just Creche

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Nova Cat is the one example of something semi-canonical where in the apocryphal German BT novel Katze unter Bären, where "Katzmeister" is used for Nova Cat instructors. This was translated as I understand it into "Kittenmaster" which is real close to the Smoke Jaguar Kitmaster.

I don't really care for Kittenmaster or the Nova Cats having something so close to their mortal enemies the Smoke Jaguars despite the fact both are feline totems.

I understand your view Dragon Cat but do you have an alternate theme to suggest? Energy weapons specialization? Their Hot Drop tendency which you could make wise cracks about a cat always landing on its feet.

Sticking with the mystic motif I do like wolfcannon's suggestion of Novice better then Herald. NOVice sounds more NOVa cat and it does convey the visionary theme. However, I do like Overseer better then Visionary or Vision Master and Insight Clusters as the training formations of the Clan is still the best for me.
