Hey gang, as Threat Assessments 2785 progresses along the need for unit insignias is becoming more and more apparent. So I thought I’d issue a call for art. Some symbols we already have or are drawn from canon sources. As such the DCMS and the LCAF have largely been accounted for. In the future I’d like to redo or sharpen some of these but I’d like to concentrate on creating something for these units below. As you can see most are for the Federated Suns (26 in all needed for the AFFS) whose military underwent perhaps the most dramatic remodeling following canon events. Rounding out are list are nine symbols needed for House Liao and six for House Marik. We have notes available for each unit if you need inspiration.
I’d like to start off with the Andalusian Cazadores whose write up I just concluded. If possible I’d like to base their symbol off the native Mycosia blossoms which were noted for their brilliant green triangular flowers. I believe there is a picture of them somewhere. Anyhow thanks in advance.

Abbey Templars base. I think I need to find a decent sword to put in there somewhere.
-
Both are much better than what I originally had. See below.
I'd like to base the Bolan Scouts insignia off their real life Pakistani symbol. I tried to clean it up but maybe somebody could do a better job with the eagle. ;)
Graham Grenadiers done by Bradshaw is a keeper.
-
This any better? I cleaned up Graham Grenadiers while I was at it.
-
Grahams Grenadiers looks great. I'll try some subtle changes with the eagle Sid and send it back to you for a cleaning which looked pretty good.
-
I liked the bird-on-orange you had in the Abbey Templars prototype, so I though we could use for the League Regulars.
-
I like it! The Marik eagle is always good but what is the signifigance of the orange background? Free Worlds natives serving with the SLDF who returned are lumped into this contingent. I wonder if a Star League star would be appropriate in some way.
-
I suppose, though with the close scrutiny the unit is already under wouldn't that make the spooks at SAFE even more paranoid about them?
-
True enough but I figured some Star League heritage might shine through. It is a good looking insignia.
-
Hmm... How about a small Cameron star sitting about where the talons on the bird would be? Shows their SLDF heritage but gives the impression of being subservient to the League.
-
That sounds excellent.
-
Here we go.
-
Think that will work nicely ;)
-
Kalidasan Regulars emblem which, after reading up a bit on Camospecs, I find that I unknowingly came real close to the Silver Hawk Irregulars emblem. Fits, since as the Kalidasan Regulars do become the Silver Hawk Irregulars it can be seen as the prototype to the final design.
-
Very nice!
-
Im not particulary artistic but I have a suggestion for the Remagen Panzer Brigade logo.
http://www.militaryimages.net/photopost/data/577/11Bridge_at_Remagen3.jpg
The classic image of the Bridge at Remagen has to be the logo for any unit calling itself Remagen Panzers.
-
I'm not happy with this one, but there is really not much that can be done with the Remagen bridge.
-
How about this for the Nahoni Strikers?
-
For the Seven Sisters Brigade...
-
Well another basis for the Remagen Panzer Brigade would be Little Richard's which is eventually hatched from here. Not sure how much of a help that is but what we have needs work.
I don't care for that one as the Nahoni Strikers CJvR but it isn't bad for something else.
The Seven Sisters Brigade looks very good.
-

That was what I originally had in mind, but the allure of the historical reference convinced me to give the other one a try.
-
Exeter Cavaliers
-
Real life influenced 6?
-
RPB based on the Little Richard's PB emblem.
-
Oh I like it!
-
Agreed! Well done.
-
Found a nice muketeer for the Marlette Musketeers...
-
The colors are Davion like for certain but I'm not sure it would make a good insignia as is. Keep those pics coming - some good stuff!
-
Real life influenced 6?
Yeah, British 6th Armoured Division WWII, 'The Mailed Fist' fought in North Africa and Italy.
-
Hmm, perhaps Sid could Davionize it.
-
Since Exeter is a Draconis March world I was thinking of giving the gauntlet a golden colour and puting the Combine emblem in the fist.
-
Sounds like a plan.
-
:)
-
Nice ;D
How about this for the Nahoni Strikers?
-
This for the Woodbine Chasseurs?
-
and this for the Kathil Cuirassiers?
-
Obviously all will need Syd's touch to davionise them.
-
Very nice, how about a different background for the Exeter Cavaliers. Color? And shape how about a circle instead of square outline?
Some interesting suggestion 6.
-
This? ???
-
Doesn't feel right how about a red background?
-
Here it is in red and in blue.
-
I like the blue persionally.
-
I like the blue as well!
-
Me too.
-
Two more.
-
The Musketeers are pretty good but I don't care for the Kathil unit.
-
Maybe the hammer being the other way up?
-
A fellow in Russian Curassier uniform.
-
Let's try this one.
-
I kinda of like it but can you tell what the helmet is?
-
Well that is a fairly typical curassier helmet, so yes.
-
Two more.
-
Nice, i like them both. ;D
-
Agreed fantastic work!
-
I see I forgot to do the Provincial Guard when I did the rest of the FWL units.
-
I really like it!
-
I based it off the Blue Angels emblem.
-
Very nice.
-
Hobbs Hospitaliers and Federated Irregulars

Hobbs Hospitaliers and Federated Irregulars
Cant say I lke the empty robe, looks like it says "Out for lunch, please invade after 13:30".
Aside from that the traditional Hospitalier colours, IIRC is the white Maltese cross on black.
The colours and insignias of the various military orders:

;D
-
?
-
I like this one for the Hospitalers.
-
Lothair Legionnaires. Emblem is a map of the Lothair Combat Region and was inspired by the 331st Royal BattleMech Division's emblem.
-
Nice idea, i like it.
-
Interesting idea, different numbers per units. How about we put the Davion Sword and Sunburst in there instead?
-
???
-
Humm not sure, i liked the number idea, could the two things be combined?
-
Humm not sure, i liked the number idea, could the two things be combined?
I think it would be better.
-
Maybe put the number in the lower left corner?
-
I like that idea as well although I like it with the Davion symbol!
-
Symbol + Number
-
I think we have a winner - nice job Sid!
-
Works for me.
-
Nice.
-
Working on Draconis Militia (aka the Shadow Regiments) and wanted to post insignias from the Succession War game. Tried cleaning up Matar already and I think we need at least two more with an overall symbol for the Militia.
-
I'll add them to the list. For now I'm focusing on finishing off the FedSuns units: Verde Lancers prelim.
-
IS that a headless horseman?
Perhaps a fitting logo for SW1 AFFS... ;D
-
Not enough stylised :P
-
It's only in stage-1: setting up the basic shapes. I'll add colour and everthing else (a head included) if this is the basic form we want.
-
Well I do like it for starters but I'll wait till colorization to comment further.
-
I like the look of it.
-
I'll add colour
Let me take a guess: green :P
-
Let me take a guess: green :P
Maaaybe... ::)
-
Wow, I like! Why a green knight??
-
Well, verde does mean green in Spanish, so the unit's name is technically "The Green Lancers".
-
:P
Very good! This is a keeper then. Keep up the good work.
-
Point Barrow Bulldogs
-
Robinson Reivers
-
They are both very good but I was thinking of something different for the Reivers. Your initial reminds me alot of the Regulan Hussars. I was thinking white and blue because of the Star of David (see Israeli flag) and the Border Reivers (see Scottish flag).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Border_Reivers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Border_Reivers)
Even though the Robinson Rangers don't follow that scheme I was thinking that their forerunners might. Thoughts?
-
Not really seeing the Regulan Hussars connection.
I guess I can give it another shot. I went with the Reaper and skulls as a play on words: "reiver" pretty much means "one who robs", and since it is a military unit it will be robbing you of your life. Hence, the reaper.
-
Well how about we get more feedback - opinions anyone?!
-
I like it, i think it fights their name very well.
-
I agree with Takiro.
To understand Takiro's comment, check this: http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Regulan_Hussars (http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Regulan_Hussars)
-
I like it but i can see Takiro's point.
Regulan Hussars attached.
-
Regulan Hussars attached.
;D
-
Since you seem to want a connection to the historical Reivers I included the Scottish flag (for the blue and white) and a horse, one of their most defining features.
-
I love it! Don't get me wrong the original was fantastic too but this was more appropriate in my mind.
-
I love it! Don't get me wrong the original was fantastic too...
Hmm... Maybe use it for a different unit? Tancredi Roughriders, Baranov’s Regulars, or the Sarna Shock Brigades?
-
It is certainly usable. The Roughriders is interesting suggestion now that you mention it if I recall Hansen's modern day insignia with the skull. Not sure though. The other two units I would say not. I still have a file for unused or future insignias from Mercenary Guild. I'm sure it will fit somewhere eventually.
By the way Sid doing a lot of work for the Draconis Militia (Shadow Regiments) and I got pretty in depth. Thanks to ScouseJedi's original idea to name each regiment for animals in Japanese it is developing pretty nicely. Don't worry not doing every single regiment. Gonna need one for each of the parent organizations though. We got four from the Succession War game and two more we need from scratch. We could also use one for the overall Draconis Militia (Shadow Regiments).
Draconis Militia (Shadow Regiment)
Ashio Militia (new, Ronin, perhaps the planetary flag in HKSB or Dieron since that is their target could be inspirational)
Samarkand Militia (Succession War game, Ronin)
Chian Militia (Succession War game, Ronin)
Matar Militia (Succession War game, Ronin)
Algedi Militia (new, Gaijin, not sure if there is a planetary flag but Vega could be another option or I have another idea ;) )
Kessel Militia (Succession War game, Gaijin)
-
Very nice - I like it.
-
Got an idea on the Draconis Militia (Shadow Regiments) overall insignia. This pic from the Star League Sourcebook page 58 has got a few interesting images. What really got my attention is the inverted triangle at the center of the samurais helmet with a serpent in it. Might make a fine symbol.
-

-
Looks nice although the snake might not be enough Kurita.
-
Very nice Sid, much better than my poor attempt. Think it will do for the Draconis Militia.
-
Hey guys I wasn't content with a few insignias so I redid the first of three. Hope you enjoy the Kathil Cuirassiers. I'm also working on redoing the Federated Irregulars and Hobbs Hospitaliers.
-
I’d like to start off with the Andalusian Cazadores whose write up I just concluded. If possible I’d like to base their symbol off the native Mycosia blossoms which were noted for their brilliant green triangular flowers. I believe there is a picture of them somewhere.
Got back to this one tonight. Still trying to figure out exactly what to do. Posting the original insignia developed by Bradshaw then the Mycosia blossom that I colored from Historical 3039. Thoughts are welcomed.
-

Maybe keep the same shape and colour of the original and just replace the horse?
-
Not bad but needs something more.
-
Cuirassiers might be a bit too much detailed/complex.
As for the Cazadores, I liked the horse and perhaps you should use the head of an Andalusian horse.
-

That sounds good Ice with a mycosia blossom in the picture too.
-
Blossom on one side and the horse on the other?
-
Not sure, whatever would look better is my philosophy. ;)
-
I shall wait and see the result.
-
This? ???
-
Not sure about it.
-
Maybe we should scrap the background or change its colors. The horse (maybe not that one) and flower are keepers.
-
How is this?
-
Sure. I'd prefer the flower being more visible/prominent, but it looks alright as is.
-
Looks good to me.
-
How is this?
-
Nice but why do we we need the flower?
-
Well we don't need anything really but it is one of the main symbols of their homeworld and so I tried to incorporate it.
-
I think it is a bit too much. :D
-
Clovis Guards.
-
Very cool, another map insignia with a nice colored shield. I like it!
-
Nice.
-
Chesterton Dragoons
-
Wow, I like!
Nice job widowcompany ;)
-
Nice but why a Lion?
-
Tancredi Roughriders
-
I don't know really it just seemed to fit to me.
Here was my first idea, but it just didn't feel right. So i switched to the lion and it just felt right.
I think it is still usable for something, but I just don't know what?
-
Two versions for the Franklin Gorgons.
-
I prefer the first one.
-
I think the first one will due nicely.
-
Tancredi Roughriders
Wanted to build on this one as first presented by widowcompany. You'll notice the Davion flag (see the cover of FM updates) background. Hope you like it. ;)
-
I really like that! The flag background really makes it jump out.
-
giving the Killarney Kerns a try.
-
Love the background but thought the Davion sword might be more appropriate then the Highlanders. What do you think?
-
I do like that better. My options with photo programs are limited all the good ones are on the wifes computer, she is the scrap booking guru.
-
Not a problem widowcompany - your images are pretty good and much appreciated.
-
I get a lot of ideas up all night with the new little one. Sleep deprivation is good for creative writing and art. ;D
-
Keep em comin!
-
I saw this pic in a file I had for some other work I was doing and it just said "Sarna Shock Brigade" to me.
-
It looks shocking for sure but it isn't quite right. I'd like to change the colors if possible to yellow lightning and green background or draw upon a Sarna insignia for the Brigade.
-
Ok, I can take crack at that
-
Sarna Shock Brigade
-
Wow, I like that. Very nice!
-
Thank you, that is actually the first one I did. I thought it was to bright and simple, so i posted the second one.

Capellan Chargers
-
I've got prelims for both the Messengers of Shiva and the Broken Wheel Charioteers that I'll finish and post in the morning. Too tired to work on them right now (just got off work).
-
Capellan Chargers
Wow!!! Like that one a lot!
-
Here we go.
-
Love the background but thought the Davion sword might be more appropriate then the Highlanders. What do you think?
You don't see the sword that well.
-
I thought Shiva had several arms?
-
I thought Shiva had several arms?
If I am not mistaken that Shiva has four arms...
Ciao
Hessian
-
Nice Sid I like them both.
-
Hobbs Hospitaliers
-
Other than needing some minor cleaning up, I like it.
-
well if you got a decent photo program and can clean it up give it a whirl, cause I don't have one.
:'(
-
Wow, very nice where did you get that from. I might try to cut out the Hs and put a sun in back of the sword and knight. Looks great already though.
-
If I am not mistaken that Shiva has four arms...
I missed them ;D

Nice idea.
-
well if you got a decent photo program and can clean it up give it a whirl, cause I don't have one.
Download GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/), it is free and has most of the features that photoshop/photostudio have.
Two versions:
-
Wow they are both very good. I'd go with the first one. What do you think?
-
You know what the second one is growing on me Sid - tell me what you think about the Hobbs Hospitalers guys. Which one do you like?
Also redid the Cazadores again trying to make the Myocosian flower look better with it - what do you think?
-
I'm more partial to number 2 myself.
As for the Cazadores: I think the previous version was better. The Myocosian is, IIRC, supposed to be important to that world so it makes sense that it shares space with the horse instead of just being dressing.
-
Also redid the Cazadores again trying to make the Myocosian flower look better with it - what do you think?
It somehow doesn't look right to me. The horse is so large and the mycosia so small.
What about placing a larger mycosia above the horses head?
-
The Hospitallers n°2 is funnier than the n°1 but the n°1 is really linked to the Federated Suns.
As for the Cazadores, the flower doesn't fit here.
-
Emerson Pikemen
-
The pikeman is too small for the flag (why a French one?)
-
The Davion flag is based on the French tricolor although the colors may be reversed. See cover of FM Updates. I did Tancredi Roughriders based on the Davion flag background so I'd like something different in this case. Plus the Pikeman I believe from Civilization should be larger.
-
Nasty cold is done with, so lets see if I can churn out some more unit emblems.
I had an odd idea the other day for the Federated Irregulars: An electric guitar in FedSuns colours set to some sort of background. Thoughts?
-

Odd enough ;)

Sorry to hear about your illness, glad your back.
I liked the original symbol you created save the hat. Just didn't say Irregular to me - guitar might work.
Love the Avalon Borderers - how do you come up with that one?

Random google searches and browsing Deviantart, same as all the other ones. :D

Federated Irregulars #2

Nice!

Hopefully this finalizes the Andalusian Cazadores. What do you think?
-
Good.

+1

Looking back at the Chesterton Dragoons as done by widowcompany I thought it looked to Marik with its purple outline so I changed it to red for a more Davion feel. What do you think?
-
More frightening ;D
-
Also wanted to add the sunburst to the Kerns insignia, think it looks better.
-
;D
-
Tsamma Kommandos
-
looks great, Siden!
-
Wow, is that Capellan colors on that skull neat looking. ;)
-
The South African flag, actually. The similarity to the Capellan colours is an unintended coincidence.

Yes indeed!

Tsamma Kommandos
Wow! That looks cool! And certainly commando-like.
-
Kilbourne Defenders inspired by Disturbed's "Ten Thousand Fists" album.
-
Interesting, what Mech is that Sid?
-
Charger ;D Or maybe a Griffin, maybe a Battlemaster. It actually began life as a Mospeada mecha.
-
me likey ;D
-
A firing 'Mechrat ;D
-
Anjin Muerto Caballeros. this one is just simple and dark.
-
Nice. ;D
-
I'd prefer something with a little more Spanish flair.
-
Use the classic spanish helmet as background instead of the Maltese cross.
-
more tries
-
They look good widowcompany but not a perfect fit yet. Could you combine your second and third? If you put El Muerto under that might be it.
-
like this
-
Hmm, more like this but I'm still not sure I like it. Sid, do you think you could colorize it?
-
The helmet doesn't look that much Spanish to me (but I like everything else).

just a skull

No 1 for me.

Really, I would go for 2.
-
I'm more a fan of the bronze-ish #2 myself.
-
What do you think of using this as part of the Pikemen emblem?
-
Funny pikemen.
And silver shines, so 1
-
I'd like to see more Sid before I sign off on them pikemen.
Well we got an even split 2 silver and 2 bronze for the AMC, any more votes out there?
-
bronze
-
?
-
Links don't seem to be working??
Have to find MechRat or Knightmare.
Sid could you e-mail me the pics? Thanks!
-
Perhaps we could go in another direction. The Pikemen remind me more of the massed Phalanx and the background I just didn't care for. What was the significance of the background Sid? Perhaps we could find another Pikeman like the sort widowcompany submitted and a Emerson ish symbol. ???
-
Tough call on the bronze or silver.
<flips a coin>
hmmm, I'll go with bronze. ;D
-
Hmmm... what about something similar to the logo of Longwoods Bluecoats(from FM:Mercenaries)?
Their unit insignia is a single Pikeman(see attachment).
Ciao
Hessian
-
Not a bad suggestion. For Emerson what would you have, a giant E? Map outline? I'll have to look at Irose's write up for further suggestions.
-
Kinda off topic but do we know where Longwood's Bluecoats came from? Could they be the survivors of (in this universe) the Emmerson Pikemen?
If this is the case we could then use something like the Bluecoats symbol as theirs.
-
This-ish?
-
Too blurry?
-
I like it, let me take a closer look.
-
The Capellans have been pretty much ignored so...
-
I like it - feels Capellan to me. What was your inspiration?
-
I like it - feels Capellan to me. What was your inspiration?
I wanted something that felt distinctly Capellan and included the Sian flag.

Capellan? The colours are good but the picture inside is a bit too much like a stained glass.

Capellan Lancers

Well done Sid I really like it. Remember Ice each regional force, like the Sian Commonalty Guard,
for the Capellans is supposed to harken back to pre-Confederation days.
I really like number 1 widowcompany. Great job!

When in doubt go with a Confederation insignia. You have the modern House Liao triangle or the ancient Confederation. What I included below is the old symbol which is Capella to the rest of the universe. Obviously the color, unit number, and the Cameron Star would not be there. I'll try and find the original picture somewhere. Also need to look at HLSB where Chesterton flag might have been displayed. There might also be a Chesterton unit in 3025 we could draw inspiration on.

The piece I have is the Chesterton flag (or the interesting bits of it, anyway). I'll give the Capella one a go in the morning.

Samarkand
-
Very nice!
-
Nice.
-
Just three left two go. Is there any canon insignias we need to do?
CCAF
Liao Rangers
Baranov’s Regulars
DCMS
Algedi Militia
-
Algedi
-
Again, very nice.
-
Interesting, why the horse and Dragon on a Decipticon symbol? ;)
-
I have no idea. It just turned out that way on its own.
-
Rangers
-
Love the triangle and background but what is the main or central pic?
-
An archer/ranger, though I suppose I could replace it with a mech or something.
-
A ranger isn't a bad idea Sid but how about these suggestions instead?
The Ranger Skull is often seen today and would be very acceptable as a replacement. The Liao Rangers are the precursors of the Death Commandos after all. I wouldn't use their skull insignia but a generic skull wearing a beret with crossed Liao swords underneath could be the perfect fit. See US Army Ranger or Irish Army Ranger in google search.
Looking up the Liao Dynasty gave me the character of Chinese Dynasty of long ago. Perhaps this could have been another symbol of the House early on or something marking their special forces troops.
-
How about this for the skull and bones with chinese character
-
Crossbone and crossed dao.
-
I like the third one with the crossed dao. Nice job guys and good hearing from you widowcompany.
Only Baranov’s Regulars remains for insignia but I was wondering if you would be up for select regimental insignias? What do you think??
-
I'm not sure. With classes having started back up (final year at college) I really do not have as much free time as I did when I only had my job to wory about. I can try to get a few out, but progress is going to be slowed down quite a bit.
I've got a chunk of free time tomorrow before work, so I'll see what I can do for the Regulars.
-
Yeah, the third one is mint. ;D
-
Baranov's
-
That is a good one Sid but I was thinking of something of a Star League-Capellan Confederation merger which this unit pretty much is. This one would be excellent for an individual regiment.
How is this?
-
Redid the original Capellan symbol for the Capellan Defense Force, might put a shield in back of it for the unit insignia. I wanted to change from the silverish color seen in the other merc unit from the Guild fanbook.
-
Okay guys what do you think of these two redos? Put a shield in back of the original symbol for the Capellan Defense Force and did a little bit of recoloring. The Tamar Jaegers I recolored the fist - not black for the original symbol but a deep blue for House Steiner.
-
A little clean up and they are good to go.

#3
-
Nice Sid, I'm gonna start to compile a list of notable regiments who may deserve an insignia of their own. For example the LCAF 4th Royal Guards. No rush we still have plenty of time.
-
For the Baranov's insignia, I would prefer a smaller arm.
-
Not sure how that would fit Ice, reversing the large arm gave me just the right room for the Star League star. ;)
-
Then make both of them smaller.
-
I'm not dead, just lacking much of anything resembling free time.
-
Very nice, sorry to hear about your lack of free time but I can identify with you.
