Sports in the Inner Sphere and Periphery.

Okay, I may not be a big sports fan and nothing goes boom, but who plays what. I can see every thing being played in the Republic. Soccer in the FedSuns, Donegal and Skye; Hockey in Tikonov, Rasalhauge and Alarion, American Football in Rasalhague and so forth. As a novelist the background might be usefull.

Basketball in Rasalhague (cf. Golden Boys in Mercenaries Supplemental II).
The Ghost Bears also played a match of I don't remember what during the Invasion to capture a world.

In Turn they tested each Clan namesake in trial against the Ice Hellion's mettle. Each chased the Ice Hellion, hunting it down. All failed to match the predator's speed and grace. Khan Cage smiled and said, "And that is how we shall be."

Football baby, American style! I had envisioned that as the sport of the Republic as the Terran worlds seem to be descended from North American settlers it seems a reasonable assertion. Baseball would probably be 1A with basketball, soccer, and hockey following behind. I'd also stick with the religion thought, meaning Terrans prefer traditional as opposed to new wave sports created by their Spheroid brothers.

Any sport invented after Mankind's Exodus to the stars. A good example is Skye basketball listed in Frederick Steiner's profile in the HSSB. A mixture of basketball and street brawling in which players use pugilistic skills against their opponents. Clearly an invention of an InnerSphere culture that left Terra. Mech Games while a newer "sport" can be explained with the simple fact that the Terrans invented the 'Mech and events like the Martial Olympiad.
Oh and btw I found this on Battlecorps, link and copied text below;

Cowboys Beat Vipers in SphereBowl CIX
[7 February 3071: TerraSportsNet, Terra (Voice of Blake)]Sphere Bowl CIX lived up to its exciting billing, as the New Earth Cowboys scored two touchdowns late in the game to surge past the Epsilon Indi Vipers 38-33 under clear skies in Sydney, Australia. Cowboys' cornerback Clint Wiley was awarded the MVP as he turned the game around. Up 33-24, the Vipers had the ball on the New Earth 8 with 3:14 remaining in the game and seemed to be about to seal the win when Wiley stepped in front of Vipers quarterback John Trimbley's pass and returned it 106 yards for a touchdown. The Cowboys' defense came together to sack Trimbley twice more on the Vipers' ensuing drive and forced them to punt with 1:44 remaining. Working with just one time out, New Earth quarterback Gunter Yakamura directed a drive down the field, completing 7 of 8 passes to five different receivers. Running back Drake Parsons wove through three missed tackles to score from 15 yards out on a draw play with 14 seconds remaining. Trimbley's "Hail Mary" afterwards came up short, as receiver Winston Wu was tackled on the 5 yard line.

Lacrosse is played at the Nagelring according to phalen kell in BoK.
I'd expect cricket to be common in the FedSuns, Taurus and Regulus.

It would flesh out the world even more if we could come up with some basic leagues, teams etc so we have the Spherebowl, so we most likely have versions of the World Series and World Cup ("Worlds" Series, Star League Cup?) and so forth. The Stanley Cup and so forth may not even be much changed, but from the BattleCorps excerpt I think Teams have jumped from representing geographic locations to worlds themselves, in more developed systems you might even have (I'll use US style football as an example.) a familliar game season, then the best teams overall from each world go to a National championship then to a Sphere wide one, perhaps every two to four years.
Fun to toy with anyway.

Actually we may not even have the SphereBowl. Somebody has got to help me with Roman numerals but CIX translates to 109 for me. If I'm correct that means the event may have begun in 2962 (3071-109 = 2962). Likely events like the Amaris Coup and the Succession Wars may have disrupted sport leagues at large. I'm certainly for such an effort BTA. What sports do we have?
American Football
Soccer (Football)
Baseball
Basketball
Hockey
Rugby
Lacrosse
Cricket
New Sports (Skye basketball)
I'd like to concentrate on the Terran Republic but I'm open to assembling info on the other realms of the Human Sphere. I'm sure Knightmare could include such a report in his 2785: Year in Review.

Ah yes, a popular event on Oliver no doubt. I'm currently looking through Shadowbeat for ideas. Older Shadowrun product that details entertainment in that industry.

Since you listed only team sports I will only add further team Sports Takiro.
Hmmm... I assume by Hockey you mean Ice Hockey Takiro ?
If yes there is also (Field) Hockey, reasonably popular in Europe and many former british colonies(Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Canada)
To complete the football series there is also Gaelic football.
Catering to the High Society is Polo(does anybody else immediately think abouth the britisch royal family?)
Other reasonably popular team sports are volleyball and water polo.

You are quite right Hessian I only listed team sports. Looking at Shadowbeat I have several more ideas including individual sports liking boxing, wrestling, mixed martial arts. Then we come to the Olympic Games, would they still be around? Not the Martial Olympiad but our Olympics. And while we are at it should we discuss amateur or professional sports? Perhaps both?

In my opinion the answer is yes regarding the Olympic Games. I simply cannot imagine that the the Olympics do not continue.
And regarding amateur or professional sports I think both can be discussed. Professional sports in the foreground and in more detail with amateur sports more in the background. I would envision professional sports on a planetary and interstellar level with amateur sports more on a local or regional level.

Shadowbeat? I do not have this one.
Rather than a Spherebowl, what about something like Martial Olympiads with the best teams in the Star League competing against themselves and a selection of the best teams of the Inner Sphere?
