Cowboys Beat Vipers in SphereBowl CIX
[7 February 3071: TerraSportsNet, Terra (Voice of Blake)]Sphere Bowl CIX lived up to its exciting billing, as the New Earth Cowboys scored two touchdowns late in the game to surge past the Epsilon Indi Vipers 38-33 under clear skies in Sydney, Australia. Cowboys' cornerback Clint Wiley was awarded the MVP as he turned the game around. Up 33-24, the Vipers had the ball on the New Earth 8 with 3:14 remaining in the game and seemed to be about to seal the win when Wiley stepped in front of Vipers quarterback John Trimbley's pass and returned it 106 yards for a touchdown. The Cowboys' defense came together to sack Trimbley twice more on the Vipers' ensuing drive and forced them to punt with 1:44 remaining. Working with just one time out, New Earth quarterback Gunter Yakamura directed a drive down the field, completing 7 of 8 passes to five different receivers. Running back Drake Parsons wove through three missed tackles to score from 15 yards out on a draw play with 14 seconds remaining. Trimbley's "Hail Mary" afterwards came up short, as receiver Winston Wu was tackled on the 5 yard line.

Actually we may not even have the SphereBowl. Somebody has got to help me with Roman numerals but CIX translates to 109 for me. If I'm correct that means the event may have begun in 2962 (3071-109 = 2962). Likely events like the Amaris Coup and the Succession Wars may have disrupted sport leagues at large. I'm certainly for such an effort BTA. What sports do we have?

American Football
Soccer (Football)
Baseball
Basketball
Hockey
Rugby
Lacrosse
Cricket
New Sports (Skye basketball)

I'd like to concentrate on the Terran Republic but I'm open to assembling info on the other realms of the Human Sphere. I'm sure Knightmare could include such a report in his 2785: Year in Review.

Since you listed only team sports I will only add further team Sports Takiro.

Hmmm... I assume by Hockey you mean Ice Hockey Takiro ?
If yes there is also (Field) Hockey, reasonably popular in Europe and many former british colonies(Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Canada)

To complete the football series there is also Gaelic football.

Catering to the High Society is Polo(does anybody else immediately think abouth the britisch royal family?)

Other reasonably popular team sports are volleyball and water polo.

You are quite right Hessian I only listed team sports. Looking at Shadowbeat I have several more ideas including individual sports liking boxing, wrestling, mixed martial arts. Then we come to the Olympic Games, would they still be around? Not the Martial Olympiad but our Olympics. And while we are at it should we discuss amateur or professional sports? Perhaps both?

In my opinion the answer is yes regarding the Olympic Games. I simply cannot imagine that the the Olympics do not continue.
And regarding amateur or professional sports I think both can be discussed. Professional sports in the foreground and in more detail with amateur sports more in the background. I would envision professional sports on a planetary and interstellar level with amateur sports more on a local or regional level.

Just some stuff from the Handbooks;

Lyran Sports
In sports, for instance, many Lyrans have developed an avid interest in professional wrestling, boxing, rugby and classic football. As a result, many talented athletes have become household names, such as
Todd “Gefahrenzone” Gunther Pan-Alliance Pro-Wrestling champion from 3062 to 3066—and Karletta Stodder, this year’s star striker for the Donegal Destroyers women’s football team. In some regions, such as on Arc-Royal and in the Isle of Skye, similar sports find an almost equally enthusiastic fan base, like hurling, an ancient Gaelic sport similar to football and hockey. Planetary, regional and even interstellar leagues manage most of these sports, with teams and competitors spending a healthy portion of the year traveling or training between matches that often take place in packed stadiums or arenas, and are broadcast throughout the realm and beyond on several holovid, video and radio networks. Many of these leagues are interlinked, allowing athletes and teams to win their way through an escalating chain of tournaments and play-offs from the planetary level through the national championships.

Davion Sports
Sports, hobbies, and other pastimes all play an important part in the lives of the nation’s citizens, giving them something to root for as well as something to be a part of in what free time they may have. Teams belonging to major sports leagues play regular games against opponents, giving their fans the chance to see those games in person or via broadcast (especially for off-world fans). Popular sports include clankball, polo, rugby, and sleckish, all of which produce tremendous profits through ticket sales and merchandising.
Likewise, animal sports and competitions are incredibly popular. Horsemanship and the size of one’s stable are status symbols among the affluent, while even the common citizens enjoy horse and dog racing. Business in these sports is lucrative enough that broadcasters compete to gain the rights for distributing tri-vids of the events. In the Outback, there is a constant interest in animal blood sports; bull, cock,
and even takooma fights can be found with regularity and are even spreading to more civilized worlds like Belladonna and Sakhara V.

Marik Sports
Gaming is particularly popular, especially on Kyeinnisan, which has established itself as the Gambler’s World and mixes high-stakes gaming with gaudy spectacle. Sports predictions (such as football pools and horse or tabi racing) are also extremely popular, as are lotteries.
Participation in sports is commonplace, with everything from rugby and baseball to kibadi (a tag-like team game) and polo. Favored sports vary from world to world, but the most widespread are cricket and soccer, both of which have adherents across the Free Worlds. Members of professional teams are well paid and as popular as many vid stars, and support for “the team” is a common element of League culture. Most worlds have their own sports leagues and championships. Some sports have interplanetary tournaments, usually held every four years, that pit the best teams of several worlds against each other. The Soccer League Championships are one of the best-known such tournaments, held at the Adelphi Stadium on Atreus, closely followed by the Atrean Games athletics tournament.

I agree Hessian the Olympics would probably continue but 2785 might be their finally year with the Succession Wars and all I doubt international games of any kind would survive. But we can detail a history during the Star League, Amaris Coup, and a last recent gasp. What should the name be? The Pan Spheric Games??

Shadowbeat is FASA7109.

I think different sports probably have varying levels of competition depending on their popularity Ice. Soccer for example might have international appeal resulting in a Sphere Cup held once every four years with teams representing each House competing. North American or Terran Football might only span the Hegemony (now the Republic) despite its popular annual Super Bowl broadcast throughout the InnerSphere. Other sports might see regional appeal in a local area of space, a single star system, or lone planet.

Good point but wrong example since it is popular enough to be played by people in the FRR in the 3050s.

No doubt Ice its popularity goes beyond a single nation but it isn't international if you get my meaning. To explain see baseball today. MLB is the single most powerful league located mostly in America but there are other leagues in nations throughout the world like Cuba. Because of political considerations the two really don't mix. The World Baseball Classic brings an international flavor to the game yes. This could just be my interpretation however. It is an interesting to see where exactly the line gets drawn.

To another subject I was trying to think of new sports for the Terrans. Their high tech extremely computer literate culture brings to mind video game competitions or even holo sports. Neat to think about some of the possibilities.

And I get your point Takiro but Baseball in real life is not as popular as I think Football is in the CBT universe.

On worlds with a large Australian population, I believe Australian Rules Football would certainly have followed.

Ah yes, a popular event on Oliver no doubt. I'm currently looking through Shadowbeat for ideas. Older Shadowrun product that details entertainment in that industry

Ciao

You are quite right Hessian I only listed team sports. Looking at Shadowbeat I have several more ideas including individual sports liking boxing, wrestling, mixed martial arts. Then we come to the Olympic Games, would they still be around? Not the Martial Olympiad but our Olympics. And while we are at it should we discuss amateur or professional sports? Perhaps both?
