Okay guys I’m drawing up some of the best indicators for force strength in the InnerSphere as we speak. That being the SLDF assignment list in 2764. Although I can’t find it exact somewhere there is a reference of 2 to 1 superiority for the SL Regular Army. Appreciate if some one could find that quote. Anyway got some other interesting things to share.

First up the Arms Control Timeline of the Star League and the questions I think it raises -
2650 The Star League passes its famous arms control edict limiting the number of troops each House could raise. (SLSB pg. 69)
Question 1; How many troops did each House have on average?
2752 During the Spring meeting of the High Council passed an Amendment to the Edict of 2650 which doubles the original allowance. They did so without Kerensky's authorization which was required by law. To pay for this military expansion they levied taxes on the Periphery the following year. (SLSB pg. 69)
Question 2; How many troops did each House have on average after the Amendment?
Question 3; Were the Houses who were previously fighting the 3rd Hidden War violating these limits prior?
Question 4; With under 30 years to the end of the Star League did the Houses ever reach these limits?
Question 5; If so how quickly did they?
2766-7 The Amaris Coup effectively blurs the legal powers of the Star League making enforcement of Arms Restrictions entirely implausible in my view. Also the Star League (Loyalist Regiments) and possibly even the Amaris Empire (mercenaries) is going to consume a large amount of equipment.
Question 6; Will this conflict impact the Houses buildup?
Question 7; When do the Houses cutoff Kerensky and the SLDF?
Question 8; 2779 or later?
2781 The High Council effectively dissolves the Star League which ends any arms control measures. This gives the Houses four years of unrestricted expansion.
Question 9; What can they accomplish in this time period?

In Turn they tested each Clan namesake in trial against the Ice Hellion's mettle. Each chased the Ice Hellion, hunting it down. All failed to match the predator's speed and grace. Khan Cage smiled and said, "And that is how we shall be."

Tak, I remeber the quote also, my question is is that 2-1 vs individual states or vs the whole Sphere?  If we know this we can extrapolate the House force totals.

To my knowledge the actual force totals are is never mentioned anywhere.  It brings up a theory I had though, brace your selves this might be stupid, what if the treaty doesnt specify types of ground troops?  "Ohh I can only have 100 regiments?" "Okay they're all 'Mechs" sort of thing.
Could be the beginnings of the 'Mech mentality so prevalent in the Successor States.  Otherwise see above.

Once question 1 is answered I would determine the amount the houses were disbanded down to and work from there.

Question 3; Were the Houses who were previously fighting the 3rd Hidden War violating these limits prior?

I would have to say yes but the forces involved were not large enough to make a dent in the economies of these vast empires.  (Yes even the CapCon)

Quote from: Takiro on March 15, 2009, 04:30:29 PM
Question 4; With under 30 years to the end of the Star League did the Houses ever reach these limits?

Probably not, remember you are still under the watchful eye of the Star League's most feared enforcers....The Accountants.

Question 6; Will this conflict impact the Houses buildup?

Absolutly even the Fed Suns probably had a major build up.

Question 7; When do the Houses cutoff Kerensky and the SLDF?
Question 8; 2779 or later?

Later, they probably began to lessen his support but remember the Lords want control of the SLDF so why cut your self off from this?

Quote from: Takiro on March 15, 2009, 04:30:29 PM

I would use the Objective raids Supplement and triple thier military output this should give you an idea.

IIRC the only solid figures available are those from the Steiner SB (p51 OE) which placed the LCAF at 122 regiments at the start of SWI. Of these 12 were destroyed ( one listed unit is an AS wing so independent AS formations might be included in the total figure ). As for the rest only 3 units were above 60% strength and the other 107 were worse off.

Also there is the incident triggering the 2650 edict when the Rim Worlds rapidly expands their military from 8 to 15 regiments. After the edict the Amarians were forced to disband the additional regiments seeming to indicate that the Rim Worlds had an official army strength of some 8 Mech regiments. ( p56 SLSB ) By 2722 it was 3-4 times the official figure counting reserve and milita units.

At the time of the first hidden war the SLDF garrison in the DC was about 350 regiments ( p58 SLSB ).

The Davion assault force for the CC invasion in 2787 consisted of some 50 regiments ( p59 Davion SB OE ).

The FWL Sarna operation started out only 10 regiments strong ( p28 Marik SB OE ).

The DCMS assault on the FS was about 50 regiments strong and was "more than a third" of the Combine military ( p53 Kurita SB OE ). 15 of those regiments were concentrated on the Tannil-Chussar region

Size of house militaries...

We have the exact strength of the LC army 122 regiments, uncertain if this includes the 17 mercenary regiments since the Tamar Tigers were listed and they were officially mercenaries. IMPO those 122 regiments do not include mercenary units so the LCAF combined strength should be about 140 regiments.
We have a fairly accurate estimate of the entire DC army size as < 150 regiments, of which some 17 are mercenary units.
The FS managed to raise a 50 regiment invasion force mearly with the units they managed to pry loose from their peacetime bases, IMPO strongly suggesting an available force over 150 regiments with only about 14 mercenary regiments among them. A big but troubled army.
There are no hard facts on the CC and FWL military, however I would rate the FWL about equal, but not quite, to the LC and the CC lower, perhaps 110 regiments total. Also the FWL have a only about 10 mercenary regiments compared to the CC 19 making the CC house army significantly smaller than the other houses, while the CC figure might seem low they did have enormous problems just halting a 10 regiment drive despite the FS being mostly inactive on it's other front.

I think a edict of 2650 limit of around 40 regiments seems a good balance. When it was revoked the houses built up to about double that and later in the race the CC fell a bit behind while the industrial giants of the FWL and LC bulked up better. The FS and DC might not have the industry of those two but they have been cheating for much longer.

Found a hard fact on the 2650 military limits on p53 Periphery SB OE.

The Rim Worlds official limit was 12 Mech regiments and 8 conventional regiments.
It was admitted to be 30 mech regiments and 10 conventional regiments in 2766. The real strength was three times those numbers.

EDIT:

Also there were many references to old designs in TRO3058, most being built in new locations but a few references to old facilities:
Vendrell - reopened p101
Loxley - restarted? p103
Son Hoa - destroyed p142

And one from TRO3060:
Victoria - SL facility reopened p76, 112, 126

I looked up that 129 number in HLSB and it is a very interesting. Page 51 under Recent History, second paragraph. "From an all time high in 2799" seems to indicate the CCAF may have grown during the early years of the war.

122 Mech Regiments for the LCAF seems to be arrived at from indications given on page 51 of the HSSB. Under Terms of Exhaustion , the fourth paragraph. It mentions 12 full regiments from the LCAF being wiped out completely and the other 110 suffering heavy casualties.

While we're on the subject- from rereading the original SL sourcebook, I don't think all the Periphery 'Mech Divisions were destroyed by the SLDF before the Coup.  They started with 50, but none aof the survivors accepted the order from Amaris to defend the RWR.  I'd assume they were destroyed in the 1st SW but do we want any kicking around?

The survivors of the periphery mech divisions formed the post SL era periphery militaries.  This will be handled in FM:P

In numbers perhaps, hard to see it growing in strength particulary as it got it's ass kicked so hard by the FWL. With the opening of the war focusing mainly on naval supremacy there is a bit of room for continued growth though. More likely the CC made the old mistake of forming new units rather than bringing the existing ones up to full strength - a bad deal for both.

FM:CC retconned this  p.32 the 129 regiments is now a prewar figure

Ok something else i've noticed, according to the Galleon entry (TRO:3058) it entered production in 2895 on Holt, according to the Harasser's entry (TRO:3039) the Harasser was deployed at the start of the 1st succession war to compliment the Galleon's captured at the fall of the star league. Which version of the Galleon's availability are we going to use?

There were certain vehicles in TRO 3025 and 3026 that were indeed available during the 1st Succession War. I'll have to get the list. However these vehicles are the exception and not the rule as many were developed later, apparently.

Designs in R&D are just that 6.

Thanks for the info Irose. That doesn't necessarily contradict and could even show a Liao military reformation circa 2799. Folding units together, disbanding others, etc.

One thing that is becoming apparent as i troll through the TRO's is that in 2785 most military production is within the former Terran Hegemony.

Also i wonder why the Lyran Commonwealth didn't make use of Captured Rim Worlds factories?

Well the TH industry produced for the 300 division SLDF, the house plants for the 200 regiment house militas so it is hardly surprising that most military hardware was Terran made.

I doubt the SLDF left much behind of the official Rim military industry but used it for parts in their efforts to repair the TH. Also most of the major facilities would be outside the regular Rim worlds and the LC never even annexed the entire Rim.

Well the rim worlds factory that produced the Rampage (ISP2) is listed as destroyed in 2767 yet during the jihad Defience Industries were able to refit it starting in 3070 and have it producing 3 design's by 3075, Mongoose II, Zeus & Banshee (TRO3075). So if it could be repaired that fast after 300 years why didn't the Lyran Commonwealth put it back into production in 2785?

I've 6 12 hour shifts this week so i'll finish my list from the TRO's on friday.

Question 7 - Not near my books but there's a reference in the Starslayer entry of TRO:3058 that basically says the LCAF was receiving its Starslayers whilst kerensky's SLDF was not due to the Steiner buricratic delays. Not sure if it has dates but might be an indication of what was happening accross the inner sphere.

Probably because they were to busy upgrading and refitting their own mech plants with the new SL tech, and later in the war to busy just keeping them running. After the disasterous loss of Hesperus and Coventry in the Jihad the Lyrans were desperate enough to look under every rock and that is when they spent the time and effort needed to fix this plant.

I do not know if it is 100% accurate but I have it also for Clans and for every big piece of hardware.

To get back to the Starslayer, problems in production prevented Blue Shot to produce it before 2774.
Blue Shot used the excuse of not knowing where the SLDF units were to delay shipments (the LCAF receiving them in time).
The first shipments arrived in 2781 after the end of the Amaris' Coup and the activation of penalty clauses for not filling the contract.

Robert Steiner II is probably the main reason behind these problems but would all the Houses act like this?

Well the LCAF faces many obstacles at this time. Personnel lose due to the Amaris Coup and a war on the Rim chief among them. No doubt Lyran nationalistic traits (Social Generals) would reemerge hampering their effectiveness further. The Archon is likely a part of the problem at the time but Commonwealth industry is likely torn in two supporting Kerensky and Robert.

BTW, special thanks to Irose for finding this reference.

Quote
HSSB P. 37
They passed an amendment to Michael Cameron's Edict of 2650 which now permitted each member-state's House Military to double in size. It was rumored that Kerensky was enraged to learn that the Star League mech regiments would no longer outnumber House Regiments two to one in the military forces stationed in each realm.

Well both Kurita & Marik refused to let SLDF troops use bases in there territory so i'd be amazed if they allowed any military shippments. As for Steiner, Liao & Davion if they think they can get away with it then, yeah i think they would.

Actually the League did let the SLDF use facilities in their space up to a certain date. Kurita was the only one that completely denied them access.

Interesting info found by Irose.
This means that previously, the SLDF 'Mech forces in the different Houses outnumbered the local units by two to one.
And you have to add to this, the units located in the Terran Hegemony.

I think that using the Deployment List found in the Star League Sourcebook, we could have a rough estimate of the respective forces of everyone.

Looking at the known mech/fighter/vehicle factories accross the great houses, either there are a lot more factories that we don't know about or they were still able to get equipment from the terran hegemony during the ameris coup. Its the only way i can see that they would be able to build up there armies and keep them supplyed.

You seem awfully short on conventional armor.

Didn't most divisions have an integral armored component as well?

So looking at the figures and using the 2 to 1 force ratio it means that the FWLM had approximatly 140 mech regiments before the coup.

The LCAF 135, DCMS 200, AFFS 145 and CCAF 107.

Actually they did - from SLSB p. 138 each mech division had an armored Brigade of 2 tracked regiments and 1 hover armor regiment.

from p.134 "Most tank regiments were assigned to  Divisions as anti-mech regiments or given garrison duty"

So an SLDF mech division was really 5 Brigades plue -
1 Mechanized Infantry Brigade
2 Battlemech Brigades
1 Armor Brigade
1 Artillery Brigade
1 Aerospace Wing
1 Headquarters
1 Cavalry Battalion
1 Engineering Battalion (this is the |-|-| symbol on the SLDF TO&E SLSB p. 138)
1 Signal Battalion
1 Support Battalion

Notably missing are any air defense units (but based on the markings 1 of the armor regiments may be air defense and not hover), MPs and Electronic Warfare units.

I'd assume so- the main difference in the Divisions was the number of Infantry and Battlemech Brigades and the composition of the Infantry Brigade.  That said, you could argue that an Infantry Division did not have an Armored Brigade as they are described as not being dependent on Vehicles.  You could also make the argument that in a Jump Infantry Division, the armored unit was replaced by the second Aero Wing.

Hmm I factored in the second aerowing but the armored brigade was not accounted for in BattleMech Divisions. Shouldn't be a complex fix.

Takiro is right: no Armoured Brigade ever made it in the SLDF.

And Irose is right too: Light Infantry Divisions and Jump Infantry ones had no vehicles.

Do the calculations for the garrisons take into account that the 20th Army was moved from the RWR back into the IS in 2755?

No they do not FirstStarLord. I believe the deployment date is 2764, a year before the Periphery exploded and the First Lord redeployed the 20th Army as part of his deal with good buddy Amaris. Good to have you back posting.

Those two factories appear in the new Handbooks right Six? Could you give us the specific book and page number? What do you think about Victoria in Liao space that the Cappies are now restoring. Also there is Jaipur noted to have a Mech factory. I have to get my list together for that.

Here is an old list from the Military Industrial Complex site that closed down a few years ago. Very informative and based on canon. It doesn't have Jaipur (which is in HLSB) and Victoria (Later TROs) which probably had Mech factories of unknown types.

This is a list of Inner Sphere production centers that I know were destroyed during various wars in the Inner Sphere. The list doesn't include partially destroyed factories (as in Hesperus II lost a production line to a DC attack but the factory as a whole survived). It does include factories rendered inoperable for one reason or another but that were later reactivated/rebuilt.
As far as is possible I have tried to determine what the factories produced, their location, who owned them, when they were destroyed and by whom. This is not always possible since sometimes all I have to go by is a factory name and a general description of what it made (i.e. Battlemechs but not any specific types).

Note that the same product can be made at several factories. For example, the Charger is still made on Luthien but was apparently also made on another planet, the location of which is unknown.
The destroyed factories have been grouped according to who owns the planet where it is located. Where the location is unknown I have listed them at the bottom of the list. All of these unknowns also happen to be former Terran Hegemony factories.

on Achernar. In addition the blueprints for the Enforcer, which is made

Achernar. The company is also known to have built mechs for the Star

Lets see the Bryant factorys were destroyed by the FWLM and Warner Inc on Quetin was destroyed in the 1st SW. the Corsera Weaponry retcon in the Northwind Highlanders pack has again been retconed in TRO's 3039 & 3050U to say that the factory was damaged and could only build parts.

Raman II is in the CapCon in 2785, captured by the FWL in the 1st SW, mech factory destroyed in 2846 and disapears from the maps in HB:HM in the 3rd SW.

Could the Brigadier plant in the Combine be on Lapida II? I ask as Nakajima Fusion Products bought a destroyed industrial complex and re-built it too build the Spider - 5V.

Could you give me a quote there Ice. I seem to remember something along those lines as well. Perhaps we have another canon contradiction.

The Star League Sourcebook when the SLDF units are described.

In Turn they tested each Clan namesake in trial against the Ice Hellion's mettle. Each chased the Ice Hellion, hunting it down. All failed to match the predator's speed and grace. Khan Cage smiled and said, "And that is how we shall be."

Probably not, remember you are still under the watchful eye of the Star League's most feared enforcers....The Accountants.

Absolutly even the Fed Suns probably had a major build up.

Question 8; 2779 or later?

Later, they probably began to lessen his support but remember the Lords want control of the SLDF so why cut your self off from this?
