When the Whitting conference disbanded the second star league, the Word of Blake's reaction surprised everyone, including Universal Exports. With forces caught out of position to react to most of the initial actions, they were unable to mitigate very much of the Word's atrocities. Many felt it was like the first succession war all over again. Recovery efforts went under way to help survivors of NBC attacks. UE's leadership was split on whether to engage militarily, or to stay in the shadows as best they could.

On many worlds that had fallen, UE smuggled in supplies to keep resistances going, up to and including full BattleMechs. By the time the Manei Domini were being openly deployed, Black Sky Industries was readying it's own forces to conduct attacks on them, and disrupt supply lines, and in some cases, simply quietly disappear whole formations that were caught unawares. There ended up being a few hard fought battles on unnamed rocks between the two groups.

When Devlin Stone's coalition began pushing the Word of Blake back, Black Sky Industries pulled it's forces out of the fight, still trying to prevent any of the major powers from realizing exactly what kind of neighbors they had. With BSI pulling out, UE stepped up it's support of the coalition with material supplies, sometimes getting supplies to forces cut off, which no one else could reach.

The extent of their activities during this period drew several group's interest, at the previously innocuous company. While it had been a household name throughout the inner sphere, it was considered relatively small time for an interstellar business. That it could deliver arms and ammunition in such numbers bore looking into.
