The real Rifleman IIC!
« on: January 06, 2015, 11:02:53 PM »

Well I wanted to explore the possibility of a Rifleman IIC with paired LB-10Xs and twin Large Pulse Lasers. This led me right to the Rifleman II from TRO 3075 which alludes to the old Solaris box set (lot of fun) and Gray Noton. Ah the memories. Hey, this is the Rifleman II?! So I just added the C and it has a bunch of armor pretty good movement and the armament I want. Yeah it is not exactly revolutionary but hey.... Even got a little fluff. Hope you enjoy!

Growing more and more defensive in its last days Clan Mongoose desperately sought out designs that would help it hold the line. One such solution was an upgraded version of the RFL-3N-2 or Rifleman II. This 80 ton BattleMech used by Star League Royal units carried a formidable anti-aircraft array and promised to bolster the Clan’s flattering defenses. There are some indications that this Rifleman IIC was a capable design frustrating enemy assaults which could never seem to achieve aerospace superiority. Combined with their formidable aerospace arm these Rifleman IICs blunted several would be attacks. Ultimately the Absorption of the Mongoose Clan in 2868 by the Smoke Jaguars ended production of this upgraded classic. While there was some interest in continued manufacturing the Jaguars stubbornly kept it from any assembly line. They insist that the ‘Mech was a dishonorable waste of resources because it was too overspecialized.

Nice version of the Rifleman IIC.  The fluff was especially nice since it explained the reason why it was not produced!

In your fluff, the Smoke Jaguars are idiots. Sure, it's designeded to be an anti-aircraft platform. However, with those weapons it also makes for a damned good general combat 'Mech. Punch holes with slug ammo and crit seek with cluster. Plus the pulsers have enough range to strike enemies as they close.

Designer's challenge, do it on the old 60 ton frame...be interesting to see how that would compare to the old RFL-3?

Okay.  60-ton frame; had to reduce speed back to 4/6/0.  9.0 tons of ferro-fibrous armor . . . which provides the same protection as about 10.75 tons of standard.  So much better armor.  Max overheat is +6 on a run, +5 on a walk.  It's got twice the ammo (shots, not tons) of the RFL-3N with better range and higher damage.

Nice job Masterarminas! I imagine the price tag much more favorable as well.

Sweet. Nice little improvement.  Was Noton's ride ever specced out?

Sweet. Nice little improvement.  Was Noton's ride ever specced out?

Technical Readout 3075 page 169. Just a small paragraph really detailing its radical upgrade (80 tons, XL Engine, EndoSteel), armament (2 LB-10Xs and 2 LPLs) and a reference to Gray Noton's ride. When I was quickly putting a Rifleman IIC together last night I remembered it and said "hey, Rifleman II now with C!" Hence the real Rifleman IIC.

In your fluff, the Smoke Jaguars are idiots. Sure, it's designeded to be an anti-aircraft platform. However, with those weapons it also makes for a damned good general combat 'Mech. So I pegged the Jags pretty good you are saying? ;D I mean when did the poor Smoked Kitties ever get written as anything but the stupid black hat. ;D

It is a solid assault weight design certainly Abele but it does cost a bunch. Also it is a BattleMech amid a world of developing Omnis plus the Mongoose's did not emerge successfully from their crisis. Those factors combined with some steep Jaguar losses at its hands or rifles (in character as written, no?) result in its demise.

I should note that it was a quick bit of fluff.
