If I get it right, you expect us to develop a design in your AU and you don't have any specifications about role, weight, weapons...
Or did I get it wrong?

I don't expect anybody to do anything, in the sense of holding a gun to their head and threatening them with opening a couple of holes in their skull to let the evil spirits out if they fail to please me! :o

Bradshaw got one possible approach to the basic premise exactly right on the first try. He saw a point in the alternate history where it seemed plausible to him that a new 'Mech might be designed to symbolically commemorate an important geopolitical development, then he designed one. :)

Another angle would be to design a new 'Mech to remedy a deficiency in the line of battle for a particular faction that it seems to you ought logically to exist because of some other development, like (for example) the CC demanding that their remaining manufacturers come up with new designs or variants to compensate for their failure to retake the production lines on Tikonov or Ares during the Blakist War and regain access to a supply of the existing designs and variants those factories had previously produced for them.

My players and I have been intermittently adding new variants to this AU for many years, but there's always a risk that, by now, maybe we can't see the wood for the trees. An outside perspective can be very valuable sometimes.

I've typed up the Zenko into the file format I always use and added a couple of minor variants that seemed logical. This is a great concept, Bradshaw! :D

The first variant is a pretty-much-inevitable weapon upgrade, while the second doubles the ammo supply and enhances survivability too.

Edit 1:
Y'know, it seems to me that, even though the Barghest never existed in this AU because there was never a breakaway Lyran Alliance, the kind of Lyran MechWarriors who became enthusiasts for that design in the canon timeline might well become pretty enthusiastic for the Zenko in this one. Conveying an impression of feral grace on the battlefield, and all that.

Edit 2:
Of course, the Brotherhood of Cincinnatus, the Citizens for Davion Purity and above all the Black Dragons are going to hate it to the point of apoplexy. Which is nice.

Funny I was planning on doing a variant.

The Nogiitsune is a variant of Zenko, seized by dissidents from the Draconis Combine and renamed the Nogistune after the mischievous or even malicious foxes of ancient terran myth. This variant strips its Federated Commonwealth favored weaponry and centers it on the traditional weaponry of the more favored Draconis design of the Panther. Seen very rarely these variants are traditionally spotted in high visible demonstrations and raids as a way to tarnish the reputation of its predecessor.

Hmm... yeah! Sounds like just the kind of obsessive, spiteful thing the Black Dragons would think up during the delayed version of the Misogi (Purification) War from 3089-94. >:(

Switching from the original MASC system to a supercharger and upgrading to an XL gyro let the... blighters downgrade the skeleton from endo steel to standard and replace the RAC/2 with a Streak SRM-4, two ER medium lasers and four additional double heat sinks without needing to sacrifice armor protection or the CASE system as well.

Bradshaw, my current thinking with regard to both models of the Nogitsune is that the ZNK-4 model ones were created in much larger numbers, while ZNK-5 model ones were created in much smaller numbers, because by 3089 (the outbreak of the delayed version of the Misogi (Purification) War) there had been many more ZNK-2 model Zenkos produced that the Black Dragons could modify and rename into ZNK-4 model Nogitsunes, while there had been many fewer ZNK-3 model Zenkos produced that the BDs could modify and rename into ZNK-5 model Nogitsunes.

Does all that sound logical and believable to you too? Or are there any important points you think I've overlooked? This design is your brainchild, so I'm anxious to be sure you think I'm treating it with proper respect in every way. :P

Edit:
Question for anybody reading this who knows more about Japanese culture than I do:

After the Misogi War was finally over, what would the victorious loyalist faction of the DCMS be more likely to do with captured Black Dragon Nogitsunes? Just write them off as too tainted to ever be used again and scrap them for spare parts? Or symbolically reclaim them by re-refitting and re-renaming them back into ZNK-3 model Zenkos?

An outside perspective can be very valuable sometimes.

started a chain of thought going through my head which has just now led to me thinking of this:

The combination of the TC taking longer to become disillusioned with their alliance with the CC and the fad for resurrecting and upgrading vintage designs that took hold in the Inner Sphere during the Blakist War all coalesced together to produce a result that was decidedly un-obvious: after all, you don't normally associate stealthiness with something named after a charging bull!

Edit:
BTW, many thanks to Ice Hellion for originally asking the question that required me to compose an answer that led in turn to me thinking of this! :)

Bradshaw, I've decided that the ZNK-1 model of the Zenko deserves a full writeup.

Is it OK with you if I use what information you included with it, namely

Co-designed by Independence Weaponry and Corean Enterprises as a wedding gift for the ceremony between Victor Davion and Omi Kurita. Designed as a statement between the two companies of their support of the wedding and merger of the two powers. Named in Japanese fashion, Zenkos were believed to be celestial, benevolent foxes, who attached themselves to Samurai families. Giving a nod to Victor's father the famous Hanse "Fox" Davion. Centered around the favored weaponry of both Houses with its Lord's Light ER PPC and Tempest rotary autocannon. The design has longer ranges than most 'Mechs but is seen more of harasser then combatant with low damage output for its tonnage. The Quad design while less favored then the more common bipedal design is an odd choice but flows well with its style and theme. Not expected to be seen in large numbers any time soon, the producers are hoping for patriotism to influence the call for larger production numbers but are hedging their bets for now with limited production runs.

, as a basis for something expanded into greater detail, or would you prefer to come up with something yourself as the Zenko is your brainchild?
