OverviewFaced with the Clan Invasion and losing ground in spite of their superior training and the superiority of their tactics, the Draconis Combine at that time only light of hope came from unorthodox tactics and technologies. Among them was the C3 Computer which allowed for better coordinated fire between members of the same unit.
However the same struggles between modernists and traditionalists that plagued the whole DCMS, also plagued the Hyöbushö preventing it to efficiently deploy these new tools in spite of the critical situation.
This is why acting upon direct orders of Gunji-no-Kanrei Theodore Kurita, Luthien Armor Works began working on a prototype to give to the DCMS what it needed. It is still unknown if Coordinator Takashi Kurita knew anything about this project but a haiku of his written around the same time as the orders were given was later found:
The Dragon sees all.
Spirit against spirit,
His roar is heard.Looking at the different ‘Mechs available to the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery, one name was immediately obvious: the Cyclops, the former Headquarters unit that had lost this capacity over the years and was now only another Assault ‘Mech among others.
Copying words from Master Sun Tzu, “Engage people with what they expect; it is what they are able to discern and confirms their projections.â€, they decided to turn the venerable ‘Mech into a true command one once again.
CapabilitiesTo perform this task and preserve the Cyclops from unwanted attention, it was decided that nothing on the outside should look different. This meant that the weapons, the speed and even the look of the armour should be exactly the same while trying to free enough weight for more Command and Control Systems.
The solution came with the use of a bulky XL Engine that paired with 11 Double Heat Sinks freed enough tons to give this Cyclops not only one but two C3 Master Computers, making it the centre of a full Company of C3 equipped ‘Mechs.
Because of the fragility of the Engine and of the lack of space, no CASE was added but the armour was maximised with the preservation of the helmet look to make it look like as it was more fragile than it really was.
The final result through not as impressive as other upgrades in terms of raw firepower was perfectly suited to fulfil its tasks
VariantsA more oriented combat version, the CP-111Z was later produced as a prototype before being left over. By dropping the C3 Master Computers, enough weight was left to upgrade the LRM-10 to an Artemis-IV LRM-15 with 3 tons of ammo and the SRM-4 to an Artemis-IV SRM-6 with 2 tons of it. Because of space problems, the SRM had to be moved from the Centre Torso to the Right Arm.
The final almost aesthetic touch was to put a Medium Pulse Laser in the Head, making the eye of the Cyclops glow.
Battle HistoryThe CP-11Z served only during the battle of Luthien where it gave full satisfaction by allowing the full might of the DCMS to be coordinated against Clan Smoke Jaguar. Two things prevented the upgrade to be considered a complete success: the lack of C3 Slave and C3 Master equipped ‘Mechs (apart in some specific units), which prevented a general use before long and also the fight within the DCMS on how best to fight.
DeploymentOnly two prototype were ever built. The first one being lost during the fight on Luthien.
However lessons were learned and served for the designing and production of later C3 Master carrying ‘Mechs.
Famous ‘MechWarriorsSho-sa Daichi Sawamura was the communication officer of Tai-sho Narimasa Asano during the whole Clan campaign including on Luthien, where he participated in the fights on the Tairakana Plains and the push of the 1st Genyosha, coordinating the fire of a whole Company of Kuritan ‘Mechs against one unit of the 5th Jaguar Regulars after another, allowing the 1st Genyosha to push further against their right flank. His Cyclops would fall later on during the fights for the Kado-guchi Valley.
