Hello, everyone.  I'll be posting some designs here that take existing Clan OmniMechs and "reimagining" them in such a fashion that they actually make sense both in-Universe as well as on the gaming table.  We'll be jumping around quite a bit, so check back in and see what the new postings are (I won't be getting to them all today).

Now, some Clan OmniMechs are REALLY well put together and don't need any tweaking.  (Stormcrow, Timber Wolf, Dire Wolf . . . I'm looking right at you.  Yeah.  RIGHT at you.)  Others . . . well, some of the others are just . . . they make you shake your head (or hang it, as the case may be).

Anyway, this is just MY take of how the Clans could have easily improved so many of their designs.  Let us begin.

The Phantom.  Okay, the original art sucked, but it DOES get better (look at the picture on sarna.net and on Solaris VII in the 3055 TRO).  A 40-ton OmniMech moving at 9/14/x . . . wow.

But just like with the Ice Ferret, it seems that Clan Wolf scientist-engineers cannot resist plugging valuable tonnage into fixed DHS.  Twelve DHS are fixed equipment . . . and almost NO configuration can overheat (none of them that debuted with the 'Mech, anyway).

The minds behind this OmniMech did give it 6.0 tons of ferro-fibrous (~84% of maximum) . . . but that leaves the pod-space at an anemic 6.5 tons. 

Yep.  You heard right.  The SAME pod-space as the 20-ton Fire Moth (at a slower speed and minus the MASC, although the armor and internals are FAR higher).

We can do better, trothkin.

To start things off, we remove that two fixed DHS and just leave the design with the standard base ten.  Internal room is NOT a problem on this design, after all.  Next, we boost the armor by one-ton (to 7 total) giving us just under 98% of maximum protection.  while keeping that 9/14 movement profile!  Armor layout is weak on the rear (4/4/4 on the rear torsos) and the head has 8 points instead of 9 . . . but that allows for the center torso and both legs to take a single Class 20 autocannon burst without going internal.  The right/left torsos can tank a Gauss Rifle or Clan ER PPC hit, while the arms will stop a Clan ER Large or Large Pulse Laser (or a Class 10 AC) with a wee bit left over.

And that boosts the pod-space to 7.5 tons . . . the same as a canon Mist Lynx.  But what do expect on a 40-tonner that moves THIS bloody fast?

Of course, some might argue that we could do the same on a 30-ton chassis with 100% of the armor for that tonnage, while having 9.5 tons of pod-space available.  Sure.  You can do that.  But at the cost of 2 tons of pod-space (our Phantom AISHB has 7.5 tons total, remember?) we have a much better ability to resist damage.  Heavier armor, more internal structure.  Yeah, it costs more, but so?  The Phantom is a medium-weight 'Mech with near-max armor doing the job of a light . . . and doing it better than MOST lights!

The Prime is . . . well, pardon the pun, a Prime example!  (Oh, that was bad!)  This OmniMech carries an ECM Suite in the right torso, two ER Medium Lasers (right arm and left arm), and five ER Small Lasers (two each in the right and left torso, one in the center torso).  We added an 11th double-strength heat (allowing the design to remain heat-neutral on a running Alpha Strike) AND a one-ton Targeting Computer to enhance accuracy.  This 'Mech can dish out nearly forty points of damage in close and has both the speed and armor protection for the Warrior to not be afraid of getting it stuck in and mixing it up.

Configuration A features an LRM-10 with Artemis IV in the right arm (two tons of ammo in the right arm for 24 missile salvoes) supported by two ER Medium Lasers (left arm and center torso). 

The B Configuration has two ER Medium Lasers (right arm and left arm), an ER Small Laser (center torso), and two Streak SRM-4 launchers (right torso and left torso) fed by a single ton of ammunition (in the right torso).

Configuration C is armed with an ER Large Laser in the right arm, backed-up in close by three SRM-2 launchers (left arm, left torso, and center torso) fed by a single ton of SRM ammo (50 missile salvoes) in the left torso.  A one-ton Targeting Computer (right torso) ensures that long-range shots with the ER Large Laser are slightly easier to make . . . and that accuracy boost continues to be felt in close as well.

The D Configuration is an anti-personnel/anti-Battle Armor unit.  An Active Probe in the center torso allows the OmniMech to locate hidden infantry.  Two ER Medium Lasers in the right arm provide solid ranged damage against vehicles and other 'Mechs, while anti-personnel firepower is provided by two Machine-Guns in the left arm (with a half-ton of ammo for 100 bursts) and two Flamers (right torso and left torso).  Two ER Small Lasers (right torso and left torso) round out the armament package.  To provide additional protection from Elemental missile attacks, the design engineers added an Anti-Missile System to the right torso with a ton of ammunition (24 defensive bursts).  This one can overheat, but only at point-blank range when running and using both Flamers.

Configuration E is a jumping fool.  Nine jump jets allow for jumps of up to 270 meters . . . pretty dang much a record!  Of course, that didn't leave much room for guns, so armament is an anemic two ER Medium Lasers (right arm and left arm) tied into a one-ton Targeting Computer to partially offset the jumping penalties.

Finally, there is Configuration F.  This one carries an Anti-Missile System (center torso) with a ton of ammo (left torso for 24 bursts).  The ranged guns are two ER Medium Lasers (right arm and left arm) backed up by two Medium Pulse Lasers (right torso and left torso).

On a side-note, the designation of "Phantom" seems kind of weird.  I mean, really, does it fit the Clan naming conventions AT ALL?  I could see it as the IS code-name for the design, but as the CLAN name?  No way.  I don't care if Phelan freaking Kell/Ward really, really wanted the name, NO WAY would the Clans break with tradition (I've got the same problem with the Pouncer, Mongrel, and Linebacker, by the way).

So, I hereby dub thee as the Death Weaver.  Also known as the Widowmaker spider.  Sure, the Widowmakers (as a Clan) are dead and gone . . . but common Clan men and women being human, they would probably have started just calling
the spiders something else.  Just so that they couldn't provoke the Warriors around them.  So Death Weaver.  It sounds Clan and is slightly ominous and threatening all at the same time.  Let me know what you think.

Next up is the Fire Moth AISHB (As It Should Have Been, duh!).

Blindingly fast when it first appeared in the Inner Sphere in 3049, the Fire Moth suffered because apparently the designers of the game believe that SPEED = ARMOR; a myth which anyone who has ever PLAYED the game knows is false.  You will eventually get hit and when you do (not if, but when) having ARMOR is a good thing.

But the original design carried only TWO TONS of ferro-fibrous armor plating . . . giving it just 38 points of armor.  To put that in perspective, that is less than carried by the 3025 Stinger and Wasp (3 tons of standard for 48 points).  Only the head and center torso can stop an IS medium laser hit (or to put it in perspective, a Clan ER Small Laser hit); everywhere else that massive weapon system fielded by just about EVERYTHING will cause a check for criticals.

On the good side, the Fire Moth moved like NOTHING before (well, nothing on TWO LEGS before) and carried 6.5 tons of pod-space for weapons.  So, the design team can be excused because to get that speed AND that pod-space, well, they had to use a 20-ton chassis . . . didn't they?

Nope.  Bumping up the Fire Moth to 30-tons gives us the exact same speed and pod-space . . . and allows for 5.5 tons of armor protection.  That is just over 2.7 times as much armor (and more internal structure to boot) than the original.  Enough to stop dead a Clan ER PPC or Gauss Rifle against the center torso, or a Clan ER Large/Large Pulse Laser/IS PPC against the side torsos, arms, and legs.

While keeping the SAME speed and pod-space.

Hmmmmmm?  Wonder why they didn't just make the 'Mech better?  Perhaps they were already planning on having the Clans lose . . . and for that to happen, they needed to have deliberate weaknesses built into them.

Or maybe they just felt that having FLAWS makes for a funner game.  I don't know about you, but losing one of my 'Mechs to single medium laser hit AIN'T what I call fun.

Okay, for the AISHB, we've bumped this sucker up to 30-tons, kept the speed at 10/15/0 (with MASC for boosting to 20 for short periods), greatly improved the armor protection, and kept those 6.5 tons of pod-space.  But what do we do with that pod-space?

Some of them were pretty good . . . others were so poorly thought out that they could suck start a Harley. 

Our Fire Moth AISHB Prime is almost the same as the original; two ER Medium Lasers and two SRM packs.  Biggest difference is that I hate mixing different sizes of missile launchers . . . so both of them become 4-packs and are moved to the right/left torso, respectively.  That saves a half-ton which allows for a Flamer in the center torso for anti-personnel work.

The A Configuration I kept as an electronic warfare unit and scout, but mixed it up a little.  It carries TAG, an Active Probe, an ECM Suite, and an Anti-Missile System (with 24 bursts), but instead of that Streak SRM-4 being the only offensive weapon I added to ER Medium Lasers.  Boring, yes.  More effective?  HELL YES.

For Configuration B, I replaced the ECM with an Active Probe (it seems like an infantry hunter to me, so the AP fits better than the ECM) and kept the two Medium Pulse Lasers.  That A-Pod has to go, though.  Instead, this version mounts four Machine-guns (two in each torso) fed from a single half-ton of ammunition.

The Fire Moth AISHB C retains the two LRM-5s (each with 24 salvoes of missiles) and the AMS system . . . but it dumps some of that AMS ammo to add an ER Medium Laser.

The D model stayed the same.

I added Configurations E, F, and G.

My configuration E adds 9 jump-jets (giving a 10/15/9 (20) movement profile!) and carries two ER Medium Lasers. 

Config F is a long-range striker armed with an ER Large Laser, and ER Medium Laser, and an Anti-Missile System.

The Fire Moth G features two ER Lasers and five ER Small Lasers, all tied into a one-ton Targeting Computer.  Eleven DHS allows this configuration to run-and-gun without any heat problems.

Tougher, more sensible, this Fire Moth is a capable and effective OmniMech that doesn't plow into the ground when kissed by an Elemental's small laser.

EDIT:  On a side note, I think that 20- and 25-ton BattleMechs and OmniMechs are simply too fragile for the modern (post 3050s) battlefield.  I believe that the Clans should have phased out those lighter designs in favor of more survivable units long ago.

The Mist Lynx had a lot of potential . . . squandered potential, unfortunately.  The armor layout was STRANGE to put it mildly, with just 3.5 tons of ferro-fibrous on a 25-ton frame (75% of maximum . . . with just FIVE points on each leg and FOUR on each arm.  The back is more heavily armored than either location . . . wait, what?!?).  And the weapon configurations?  WEIRD doesn't even begin to describe them.  Pod-space was just 7.5 tons, but the design also had a fixed Active Probe and six jump jets . . . so actually it had a total of 11.5 tons available for weapons and equipment; it just already used four of them!

Okay.  For the Mist Lynx AISHB, we punched in what we wanted to see . . . a 7/11/7 movement profile (yes, Virginia, we added that last jump jet so you can now get a +4 movement modifier!) and a fixed Active Probe.  Then we played around with the tonnage . . . turns out that if we bump it up to 30 tons we can have 8 tons of pod-space (half a ton more than the original did) AND five point five full tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (for a full 100% armor coverage on a 30-ton chassis).

NOW we are looking at something pretty interesting.  Fast, mobile, and able to pack some serious firepower (if we don't follow canon configurations exactly) on the chassis.  And, even if we follow in the footsteps of canon, we can improve the firepower quite easily with just a few tweaks and twists and substitutions.

Our Prime is . . . well, a prime example of that.  (Chuckles)  We mount an ER Medium Laser in the right arm, an LRM-10 launcher in the left torso (with two tons of ammo for 24 salvoes), and an SRM-6 launcher in the right torso (with a ton of ammo for 15 salvoes).  It is an Assassin on steroids with the same speed and mobility, more firepower, and more armor . . . all in a package ten tons less!  And it simply cannot overheat, even on a jumping Alpha Strike (unless you are lit up with flamers and infernos, that is).  Mmm, mmm, good!

Configuration A is armed with an ER Large Laser in the right arm as the primary weapon . . . but it is heavily outfitted to hunt infantry as well.  Each arm carries both a Flamer and a Machine-gun, with a half-ton of ammunition stored in the right torso for 100 bursts.  The left arm carries a TAG to spot for artillery. 

Configuration B carries an ER Medium Laser in both the right and left arms, supported by two Streak SRM-4 launchers (right torso and left torso), each fed by a ton of ammunition (for a total of 50 salvoes). 

Configuration C has an ECM Suite in the right torso.  The main gun is a Large Pulse Laser in the right arm, backed up by an ER Medium Laser in the left arm.

Configuration D has been fitted with an LB-2X autocannon in the right arm fed by a ton of cluster ammunition.  The only back-up weapons are two ER Medium Lasers, one each in the right and left arm.  This variant normally sees use as a fast-moving light Air-Defense Unit for a Star, Binary, or Trinary.

Last, but not least, is Configuration E (my own creation).  This version is outfitted with an ER PPC in the right arm and an SRM-4 launcher in the left torso with one ton of ammunition (25 salvos).

Plus, every canon configuration is still available (with an extra half-ton to spare!) and you can add more.  That is the beauty of an OmniMech, after all.  But with these few changes, the Mist Lynx (AISHB) is an effective and valuable part of any Clan force instead of a strange little 'Mech dedicated to hunting down and terminating the Poor Bloody Infantry.

Sure, she is more expensive . . . but isn't quality worth it?  I'd pay the extra in a heartbeat and I'm willing to bet so would you.

Why?  Because I got rid of the MASC?  4/6/4 vs. 4/6(8)/4 isn't a whole lot of difference; it saves four tons and eliminates the chance of you damaging your own legs when (not IF, but WHEN) the dice don't roll your way.

The Executioner.  Favorite assault-weight OmniMech of Clan Ghost Bear; 95-tons of mayhem and madness.  Specifically, the madness.

It's a 95-ton OmniMech moving 4/6 . . . which then spends eight tons on jump jets and four more tons on MASC.  Leaving it with less pod space than a Hellbringer . . . a 'Mech 30-tons lighter!  The armor is thin and whoever was making configurations had completely lost it by this point.

OK.  We start from the beginning. 

In the beginning, there was a 95-ton OmniMech frame, and the Khan spoke that it was GOOD.  For the Scientist Caste had ordained the Great Beast with Endo-steel internal structure and clad its mighty limbs in eighteen tons of standard armor plating. 

At the heart of Beast rested an extra-light engine of Power . . . 380 in rate, giving the Beast speed equal to a Cyclops or Banshee; but the Scientists knew that for the Clans such plodding speed was low so they installed jump jets.  And the Khan declared that it was GOOD.

Fifteen double-strength heat sinks were fitted to the engine core, leaving open space for weapon systems and providing the Great and Powerful Beast with 31.5 tons of pod-space.  And the Khan roared that it was GOOD.

Alrighty then.  We are looking at five more tons of pod space on our Executioner (AISHB), along with 11.1% greater armor protection.  To get this, we removed the MASC.  Why?  On a fast moving light or medium (or even heavy) MASC does serve a purpose.  But on a 95-ton Assault OmniMech?  That already has jump jets?  It is a waste of tonnage and internal space . . . at least in my opinion.

The Prime configuration is armed with two ER Large Lasers in the right arm, a Gauss Rifle in the left arm (with three tons of ammo for 24 shots!), and an LRM-15 launcher with Artemis IV in the right torso along with three tons of ammo (for 24 missile salvoes . . . balancing the GR nicely).  A sixteenth DHS has been added, making the Executioner (AISHB) Prime heat neutral on a walk or a run.

Configuration A has three Large Pulse Lasers (two in the right arm and one in the left arm) with secondary weapons consisting of three ER Medium Lasers (left torso) and a Flamer (head).  A total of twenty-five DHS makes this OmniMech run cool on all but a jumping alpha strike.

Configuration B is capable of fighting at all ranges.  The long-range gun is an ER PPC in the right arm, supported by two ER Medium Lasers in the right torso.  The SHORT-RANGE gun is an LB-20X autocannon in the left arm, with four tons of ammo for 20 bursts total.  ALL of these guns are tied into a four-ton Targeting Computer in the left torso.  For additional defensive fire, an Anti-Missile System with a ton of ammo (24 bursts) is fitted to the right torso.  Two additional DHS (for a total of seventeen) deals with all but movement heat on a jumping alpha-strike.

Configuration C is slightly more . . . eccentric.  It carries a hodge-podge of guns that does not detract from its effectiveness.  For extreme range engagements, there is an ER Large Laser in the right arm.  In closer, an LRM-15 with Artemis IV and three tons of ammo in the left arm add to the fury of Executioner (AISHB) C.  At shorter ranges still, an Ultra AC-10 in the right arm (with three tons of ammo) chimes in, followed by a Medium Pulse Laser (left torso) and a Streak SRM-6 launcher (right torso) with a ton of ammo.  Rounding out the package is an ECM Suite in the right torso.  Although mounting just the fifteen base DHS, the Executioner (AISHB) C only generates overheat on a jumping alpha-strike.

Another strange one is the Configuration D.  This model carries an ER PPC and an ER Medium Laser in the right arm; a Large Pulse Laser, a Medium Pulse Laser, and a Small Pulse Laser in the left arm, and THREE SRM-6 launchers equipped with Artemis IV fire control and fed by three tons of ammo divided among the right and left torso.  A total of twenty DHS only just STARTS to deal with the heat buildup . . . but a trained Warrior should be able to deal with the heatload.  This one is DEADLY against vehicles and 'Mechs alike once it close the range.

And finally, there is my own Configuration E.  The left arm carries an ER PPC, while the right houses TWIN LB-5X autocannons with a total of two tons of ammunition.  At close range, these weapons are supplemented by a pair of Medium Pulse Lasers in the left torso and a Flamer in the head.  With the exception of the Flamer, all of the guns on this configuration are tied into a five-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso.  Although primarily used in the Air Defense role, the Executioner (AISHB) E is a fearsome opponent against 'Mechs and vehicles as well, especially considering the reach of those LB-5X autocannons.  Just the base 15 DHS provides for all but the heat generated by jumping on a full alpha strike.

Still missing the point.  The Gladiator/Executioner was an exercise in Maximizing mobility for an assault weight platform.  you encounter a similar situation with the Charger in TRO 3025 which was "we made engines go up to 400 might as well use one"  or the Fafnir in terms of "We limited Heavy Gauss Rifles to the torso, so here is one that mounts TWO!"

when making Canon Mechs it is not always about maximizing Firepower or tactical capability but about pushing limits of any given Chassis.  For example the Dasher/Fire Moth was "Fastest Mech, Smallest Platform"  the Mad Cat/Timber Wolf, as inefficient as it is (as prove by the Septicemia nearly 20 years later) was about marrying every single weight saving piece of equipment for maximum capability on a heavy weight platform.  even the lowly Uller was "We want a Gauss Rifle/AC20 on a light mech!" and the Black Hawk was "Make a Clan Mech as low tech as humanly possible."

Which is one reason why so many canon designs flat-out suck.  Look at it from an in-universe perspective.  The Clans are supposed to be the epitome of the philosophy of "quality over quantity".  From their emphasis on the Warrior (training regimes and indoctrination that requires one-and-a-half decades) to their equipment.  The Clans are all about avoiding "waste" and utilizing their resources to the best possible extent, yes?

Given a choice between a 20-ton Fire Moth with paper for armor and a 30-ton Fire Moth with the exact same speed and pod-space but is actually able to survive on the field of battle . . . which would ANY Khan select for production?

Why waste tonnage on fixed equipment that the 'Mech in question does not need or use (i.e., Phantom, Ice Ferret, fixed heat sinks)?  Why, for the love of all that is holy, would anyone want the canon Hellbringer with its EIGHT tons of standard armor when you can build the exact same design moving at the same speed, with the SAME EXACT POD-SPACE, the same exact cooling capacity, and provide it with eleven tons of ferro-fibrous (100% of maximum armor protection) by using materials that are COMMONLY found on almost ALL Clan front-line and second-line OmniMechs?  Especially when doing so means the price tag goes up by just 449,625 C-Bills (16,095,406 C-Bills vs. 15,645,781 C-Bills).  An 2.87% increase in production costs for far greater survivability on the battlefield.

I'd buy that for a dollar.

The original Sixteen OmniMechs were (for the most part) poorly thought out, poorly designed, loaded down with deliberate flaws, and made absolutely NO SENSE in the context of Clan society and culture.  It is almost as if they were designed to LOSE and the writers couldn't think of any other way for the IS to defeat them than to hobble their 'Mechs.

It is like the designers deliberately wanted to make things harder for the Clans.  BattleMechs can have variants that improve or decrease the armor and heat sinks with a factory rebuilt or field refit . . . but oh no, do that to an OmniMech and you are no longer an OmniMech!  Except for the cost increase which you still have to pay. 

To my mind, given the Clan Warrior culture and its emphasis on the individual, Clan designed BattleMechs and OmniMechs should be built in order to fight as individuals.  Whether a 1-on-1 Trial of Refusal, or as part of a multi-Cluster battle, the goal of the Clans (as a whole, there are exceptions) is fight one opponent at a time until you win or are forced to withdraw (and admit defeat) due to damage.  Or you are killed (for some Clans).

Yet, we see time and time again, Clan 'Mech designs that are built to emphasis Inner Sphere tactics, not Clan.  'Mechs with NARC launchers . . . and no other missile packs.  What?  Does the NARC-equipped unit fire at an opponent and immediately request hegira so that his Star-mates can then pummel him with NARC-homing missiles?  We see designs that are configured for a support role . . . never mind that in the eyes of the Clans, there really are not support roles!  Look at the Fire Moth, for example.  It is supposed to get in close and deliver those Elementals.  And then provide supporting fire?

If the Elementals are attacking one hostile target, then if the Fire Moth engages the same target, that breaks Clan honor and triggers a Grand Melee, quiaff?    Sure, some Clans have a looser interpretation of zellbrigen than others . . . but no one provokes a Grand Melee lightly because of the loss of honor involved.

Remember too, the Clans have not fought anyone other than themselves since Operation Klondike.  (Okay, okay, they fought bandits, but certainly not on the scale of Klondike or Revival, eh?)  So why aren't their designs built for their own style of warfare?

That is what AISHB is trying to do.

they make no sense form clan culture if you look at the clans as monolithic, but that was never thier intention.  you are dealing with 20 smaller nations each with their own identity and manufacturing capabilities and needs.

you also look at the machines from the sole perspective of mech on mech warfare, which is not the reality of war against the inner sphere or even among the clans.

Yes the designers did want to make life hard on the clans, the clans were destined to come to the inner sphere establish a foothold and lose.  That as their entire purpose.  they were supposed to be a catalyst that would force the Inner Sphere into war the scale of the Amaris Coup brought about by Comstar Fanatics, that was thier purpose the entire time.

As they should have been is cool don't get me wrong, but it is a well known fact that the mechanics of the game are set up that there really only ever needed to be something like 3-7 Omnimechs

The Ice Ferret had such potential . . . a 45-ton OmniMech moving as fast as a Locust with nearly full armor!  But what was with those fixed twelve DHS?  Just ONE canon 3050 configuration exceeded 20 heat . . . and that one only if you got within 3 hexes!  And the configurations themselves?  THREE LRM-5s with Artemis?  It boggles the mind.

For the Ice Ferret AISHB, we keep the tonnage and speed, while boosting the armor to eight full tons of ferro-fibrous . . . this gives the design 100% of the armor protection possible on the chassis.  We ditch those two extra DHS, which leaves us with 11 tons of pod-space.

On to the configurations.

The Prime carries an Active Probe and is armed with an ER PPC and a Streak SRM-6 with a ton of ammunition (15 salvoes).  Sure, you can overheat (slightly) on a full run, but only when the Streak locks on target.  It's a bigger, tougher, non-jump Panther that does half-again as much damage at twice the speed!

Configuration A . . . well, I consider the LB-2X a waste on anything heavier than a Light.  And I have split the design into the A1 and A2 models.  The A1 carries an LB-5X with two tons of ammunition (for cluster and slug), with a pair of ER Medium Lasers as backup.  This version is a high-speed air-defense/anti-vehicle Omni par excellence.  The A2 simply replaces the LB-5X with an Ultra AC-5 and two tons of ammunition, making for a solid fast 'Mech hunting striker.

For the B model, we keep the ER Large Laser, add an Active Probe, and replace the mis-matched SRM launchers with a pair of Streak SRM-4 launchers.  Only a single ton of ammunition is carried, but since the missile launchers are Streaks that should be enough.  And to deal with hostile infantry, we add two Machine-guns with a half-ton of ammunition.

Model C carries a single LRM-20 with Artemis IV, three tons of ammunition (18 salvoes), and a pair of ER Medium Lasers.

The Ice Ferret D is very simple:  five Medium Pulse Lasers and an eleventh DHS.  Perfectly heat neutral, this version is a buzz-saw that can tear through most opponents in seconds.

We need a jumping Ice Ferret, so I made the Configuration E for that purpose.  Eight jump jets gives us an 8/12/8 movement profile, with an ER Large Laser as our only gun.  BUT, this version also carries an Active Probe, an ECM Suite, and a TAG.  It is the heavy scout from HELL.

And for those Goliath Scorpions out there, Configuration F features a targeting computer.  The main gun is an ER Large Laser . . . backed up by NINE ER Small Lasers and a Flamer for anti-personnel work.  Just the standard 10 DHS, but this is a foe with which to be reckoned with.

Finally, there is my Ice Ferret G.  While I dislike NARC launchers, some folks love them.  So the G carries a NARC with two tons of homing pods (12 shots), two SRM-6 launchers (with a ton of ammo each for 15 twin salvoes), and two ER Medium Lasers.  Fast enough to get in close and fix a pod, this configuration works well with other Clan Wolf OmniMechs that feature a heavy missile payload (well, when zellbrigen isn't force, at least).

The Black Lanner (and the Fire Falcon) from TRO:  3058 represented a sea change in the composition of Clan Jade Falcon.  Prior to their introduction, CJF was characterized by mostly slower OmniMechs (3/5 - 6/9) with a love of jump jets.

But with these two OmniMechs, we see the introduction of a Falcon 'fast wing', although the execution was slightly . . . flawed.  The Black Lanner had MASC; the Fire Falcon didn't.  The Fire Falcon (canon version, at 25 tons) was in the line of traditional SLDF 'Mechs such as the Mercury and Mongoose; the Black Lanner stretched the realms of possibility by putting a 385-rate XL engine in a 55-ton chassis that severely cramped weapons volume (13 tons of pod-space on a 55-ton design . . . not bad, but not too good either).

And frankly, the drawing looked as f-ugly as all get out.

It was an odd bird (to use a pun, here) . . . but it had potential.

Okay.  For our Black Lanner As It Should Have Been, we drop the tonnage from 55-tons down to 50-tons.  This small change actually frees up extra mass and while we DO lose some internal structure, nine tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating more than makes up for the slightly lower numbers on the internals.  We keep endo-steel and the extra-light fusion engine (although a 350-rate instead of the old 385-rate) as well as the MASC (but shift the MASC to the left torso so that we can eventually put some jump jets in the CT).

Pod space increases from 13 tons to 14.5 tons.

The Prime configuration carries an ER Large Laser (right arm), an ER Medium Laser (left arm), an LRM-10 launcher with Artemis IV FCs (left torso, with 24 missile salvoes), a Streak SRM-6 launcher (right torso, with 15 missile salvoes), and an ECM Suite (center torso).  Only the ten base DHS are carried, making the Black Lanner Prime (AISHB) potentially hot-running if the Streaks lock on target during an alpha-strike.

Configuration A features an ER PPC (right arm) and twin Medium Pulse Lasers (left arm).  For extra protection, this configuration adds an Anti-Missile System (right torso, with 24 bursts of fire).  Three additional double-strength heat sinks make the design heat-neutral on a run and allow for constant use of the weapon systems.

Configuration B is armed with two LRM-15 launchers, each outfitted with Artemis IV FCS (left torso and left arm, with 24 total missile salvoes . . . twelve apiece).  Secondary weapons consist of two ER Medium Lasers (right arm) and an anti-personnel Flamer (center torso).  Heat production is rather high when the Flamer comes into play, but otherwise the design generates only movement heat.

The Black Lanner (AISHB) C has been outfitted with THREE SRM-6 launchers (center torso, right torso, and left tors, with a total of 30 missile salvoes) supported by four ER Medium Lasers (two each in the right arm and left arm).  When zellbrigen has been disregarded, the Falcons often outfit the SRM magazines with NARC homing munitions and team the Black Lanner C with an OmniMech carrying a NARC launcher.  The design does suffer from excess overheat production, so Warriors are advised to avoid over-use of alpha strikes.

Configuration D is the infantry hunter from Hell.  At long range (13+ hexes), only an LRM-10 with Artemis IV FCs (right torso, with 24 missile salvoes) and an ER Medium Laser can come to bear.  But as the range drops, the Black Lanner (AISHB) D adds two Medium Pulse Lasers (right arm and left arm), two Flamers (right arm and left arm), and four Machine-Guns (two each in the right arm and left arm, with 200 bursts of fire).  Plus the design carries an Active Probe (center torso) to locate hidden infantry foes in an urban environment.  Only the ten standard DHS are carried, so excess overheat production is common.

Configuration E features an ATM-12 (right torso, with 15 missile salvoes total) backed up by twin ER Medium Lasers (right arm) and a triple ER Small Laser battery (left arm).  Eleven DHS eliminates most (but not all) of the extra heat this design can produce.

The Black Lanner (AISHB) F is a simple design . . . seven jump jets are added (one center torso, three each right and left torso).  Armament consists of a Large Pulse Laser (right arm) and twin Medium Pulse Lasers (left arm).  An eleventh DHS allows for near constant use of the guns and jump-jets without excessive overheating concerns.

Configuration G features just two guns:  a pair of ER Large Lasers (right arm and left arm).  But these guns are tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer (left torso) and amply cooled by thirteen DHS.  An Anti-Missile System (right torso, with 24 bursts) provides extra protection from hostile missile carriers.

And finally, there is the Black Lanner (AISHB) H.  At long-range, the main gun is an ER Large Laser (right arm); but in close, the primary firepower comes from four Heavy Medium Lasers (two left arm, two left torso).  All five lasers are tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer (right torso), while fourteen DHS provides for use of all four Heavy Mediums at close-range with only movement heat generated.  Finally, a newly developed Light TAG system (center torso) provides for on-call fire support from friendly artillery.

And that does it for my vision of the Black Lanner.  Sure, it is an OmniMech better suited for the Ice Hellion in all of us instead of the Falcons, but it does do the job, don't it?
