Atlas IIC
« on: November 07, 2017, 03:57:50 AM »

Whilst the other Clans adopted the King Crab IIC as part of the Quicksilver upgrade program prior to Operation REVIVAL, Clan Wolf, the inheritors of the Kerensky bloodname and heritage turned towards one of the Great Fathers designs and the chosen Mech of the Founder, Nicholas Kerensky himself.

Whilst its weapons load is identical to the original Atlas II, save for the SRM being upgraded to a Streak launcher of the same size and the addition of Artemis to the LRM, the Atlas IIC had a higher groundspeed with it capable of hitting and sustaining 64kph thanks to its 400 rated XL engine. To support this, the skeleton was replaced with lighter Endo-steel bones but the armour remained 19.5 tons of standard compound plate.  The cooling system was reduced slightly, but with sixteen tons of cooling equipment the Atlas IIC would run cool if the pilot was careful with their weapons choice.

Trials found that the Mech's speed was a useful advantage as it allowed to keep up with the more common Assault IIC Mech's like the Marauder and Warhammer and its long and short range firepower made it potent at all ranges.  There was a small debate over the type of autocannon to be fitted.  An ultra pattern weapon  would allow for a greater concentration of damage and allow it to destroy opponents more quickly.  But the versatility of the LB pattern won out with it being better at engaging hostile aircraft and tanks and these were used in large numbers by the Inner Sphere and could be expected to be encountered in any raid or attack on Clan Wolf holdings.

Like the Orion IIC the Atlas IIC was issued as a gift from the Khan or SaKhan of Clan Wolf and were only given to Warriors who had proven themselves worthy.  The Wolves also fought exceptionally hard to stop any of the rebuilt IIC's from falling into other Clan's hands or worse, those of the Inner Sphere.

Not a bad story marauder648 but the Atlas design was already utilized during Quicksilver by the Coyotes who modularized Kerensky's Mech into the Menoetius. Credit to JPArbiter who won the 19th and final OmniMech contest with this Zombie which utilized a standard 300. So a bit different from your high tech (EndoSteel frame and XL Engine) proposal.

I developed the Thunder Hawk IIC for the Snow Ravens as their high end second line OmniMech during the same contest.

There were also a couple of Clans that developed IIC BattleMechs like the Orion IIC (such as your Atlas IIC proposal) which drew upon their founders and are highly valued for their symbolic purpose. The Hussar IIC is such a design that the Ice Hellion did.

But more widespread was a design called the Blood Knight whose concept really took hold during Quicksilver and serves in such roles for many Clans. It is a high end second line machine like your Atlas would have been.

As I noted at the end of the 19th contest no one took much of a shot at the Pillager IIC whose design would have existed in some numbers thanks to its Reunification War production date and the Exodus taking a bunch. It's frame and internals would be perfect for Clan modernization however there would have to be extensive replacement of many other systems. ;)

Working on it. Red Pins has recently hopped on board and we are trying to get everything set for the book. ;)

*quietly votes to have the Hydaspes rotated back to front line formations to give Inner Sphere pilots nightmares.*
