Overview:
The Salamander has always been a good seller for Defiance Industries of
Hesperus II. The original low-tech model still graces many fire support lances
throughout the armies of the Inner Sphere, a testimony to its durability and
popularity.


Capabilities:
Defiance Industries has refitted one of its Salamander production line to
manufacture the new 8R design. The 8R retains its role as an LRM carrying
support 'Mech but features quite a different profile to its originators.

THe XL engine has been replaced and downgraded with a 240 rated light engine
making the 8R slower but less prone to catastrophic engine failure which would
destroy an older model. To compensate for its slower speed  jump jets have
been added giving the 8R higher mobility than its predecessors despite its
slower walking speed.

The bulky endo-steel chassis has also been replaced with a newer composite
frame freeing up a vast amount of space within the Salamanders hide. Case II
protects the torso ammo bins for the missile launchers though the arm mounted
ammo remains a vulnerability.

Still boasting a trio of LRM launchers, the 15 and 20 tube launchers of the
older versions have given way to 10 tube extended range launchers. Though this
reduces the Salamander's damage curve it gives it a striking range far in excess
of any other weapon on the battle field.

If an opponent does manage to weather the multiple barrages to close with the
8R, then the pilot can employ the Tight Stream EMP emitter and head mounted ER
Medium Laser in defense of his position. fourteen and a half tons of standard
armor provides the 8R pilot with more than adequate battle field longevity
given its role as a distance fighter.
