Deathstalker (Scorpion IIC)Overview:
In 3011, Khan Nikolai Djerassi of Clan Goliath Scorpion assembled a team of Scientists and Warriors and commissioned them to design, develop, and produce a prototype for a new BattleMech. Citing the success of the second-line
Fire Scorpion (a 65-ton heavy-weight BattleMech first produced in 2852 and an integral part of the Scorpion Touman), the Khan directed his hand-picked team to base the new BattleMech on the ancient SLDF
Scorpion BattleMech.
However, Djerassi noted, that in honor of the BattleMech which bore part of the Clan's name, this new design would not be intended for second-line Clusters and garrison forces. Instead, he intended for the new BattleMech to serve among the front-line Clusters of the Scorpion Touman . . . and he expected the Warriors and Scientists of the development team to use all available resources to making this new war-machine as powerful and intimidating as possible.
As the Khan was leaving the gathering, one junior Warrior summoned up his courage and posed a question to his Khan: "What will the name of this new BattleMech be?"
Djerassi paused and then he smiled. "Deathstalker," he answered. "Proof that lethality comes in small packages, Warrior. Let the Scorpion--the
Deathstalker Scorpion--guide you." And with that, he left.
The name was well chosen, for despite being one of the smaller scorpion species of Terra, the Deathstalker possessed a most potent and lethal venom; indeed, the
most lethal venom of any scorpion prior to the genetic engineering of the Goliath Scorpion following the Exodus.
Having been given their marching orders, the Scientists and Warriors of Project DEATHSTALKER turned their attention to the task at hand.
CapabilitiesStarting from the Brigadier Corporation SCP-1N
Scorpion of old, the team proceeded to dissect the design and determine what, if any, qualities they wished to incorporate. And (perhaps more importantly) what flaws they needed to eliminate. Modern Clan run-by-wire computer control systems and advanced gyroscopes could eliminate the worst of the rough gait that had so plagued the original design. One Scientist (Mordecai, of the Blood-House of Elam) proposed a radical cockpit design that borrowed from modern Aerospace and OmniFighters . . . the cockpit itself would be mounted on a 3-dimensional powered gimbal that would allow it to remain stable regardless of the pitch, roll, or yaw of the central chassis. Computer simulations showed that this would eliminate more than 99% of the instability of the SLDF model; indeed, the new design promised to have a smoother gait than contemporary OmniMechs!
The first concept proposed by the Scientists included a weight reduction of some fifteen tons and a corresponding increase in speed to a maximum of 118.8 kilometers per hour . . . similar to that employed on the earlier
Griffin IIC design fielded during the Golden Century. However, the resulting design left little room for armor and weapons and the Warrior rejected not only the initial Concept Alpha, but a revised 45-ton Concept Beta.
The Warriors did approve and accept the third Concept draft (Gamma) which called for a 50-ton chassis while retaining the 75.6 kph walking speed. This would require a 350 Extra Light Fusion engine, however . . . an engine that the Scorpions did not produce for themselves at that time.
Ignoring that 'minor' detail for the moment, design rapidly progressed on Concept Gamma. Nine-and-one-half tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating would provide more than 98% of the theoretical maximum armor coverage for the frame . . . eliminating the second problem of the original
Scorpion: weak protection from hostile weapons fire. A brand new endo-steel chassis (based on the earlier Coriolis Class VI QuadFrame of the
Fire Scorpion) and double-strength heat sinks would provide enough space for sixteen tons of weapons and equipment. Communications systems and the tracking & targeting array were adapted whole-sale from the existing
Fire Scorpion production line.
With the design concept finalized, the team presented their ideas to Khan Djerassi in early 3013 . . . with quite a bit of emphasis on the need to acquire a source of production for the 350XL engines to make the design a reality. Djerassi had anticipated no less; after all, the Scorpions produced just a handful of the equipment that they needed for their war-machines. However, the exact model of engine required was a problem for the Khan: just two Clans produced the Redline 350XL for existing designs. Clan Hell's Horses and Clan Jade Falcon . . . both of whom produced the engine for their
Summoner heavy-weight OmniMech.
Neither Clan was exceptionally friendly with the Scorpions, and both possessed powerful Toumans (and tempers) that made launching a Trial of Possession for the engines a rather risky affair.
In the end, Khan Djerassi decided to travel to Niles to meet with Khan Lair Seidman in the hopes of working out an accommodation. Although the Horse Khans were skeptical of the concept (after all, the SLDF itself had been
sorely disappointed in the performance of the SCP-1N
Scorpion!!), they believed that the Goliath Scorpions just might (
might) have managed to uncover a diamond in the rough. Impressed by the projected speed, armament, and armor protection, the Herd agreed to supply the Scorpions with Redline 350 Extra-Light Fusion engines . . . in return for a tithe of the annual production: 15%, in fact. They also insisted that the new BattleMech be fitted with the J63-3E ferro-fibrous armor from the
Summoner production lines . . . both design used the same mass of the armor, requiring just reshaping to fit on the new Scorpion-designed quad.
The offer was steep and the cost high, but Djerassi knew without a doubt that the Falcons would charge even more. And the only alternatives were either to launch a military campaign to acquire the engines or delay the project and go back to the drawing boards. He, reluctantly, accepted the Horse bargain.
Armament and EquipmentAlthough not an OmniMech, the team members assigned to Project DEATHSTALKER included schematics for four different weapon/equipment configurations (and the Horses would later add a fifth and sixth variant). All are currently in production on Roche.
The base concept called for a Type DDS "Kingston" ER PPC as the primary weapon, mounted in the right torso alongside a two-ton Targeting Computer. Rather than a short-range missile weapon, the Scorpion Warriors and Scientists instead installed six Series 1 ER Small Lasers in the left-torso; although possessing just two-thirds the range of the old SRM-6 of the
Scorpion, these guns were more accurate (thanks to the Targeting Computer)
and provided for a 150% increase in overall damage yield. Fourteen double-strength heat sinks eliminate all but movement heat generated on a run. A Pathfinder Series Active Probe mounted in the head rounds out the equipment package.

Deathstalker 2 substantial anti-infantry capacity. Furthermore, the Scorpion scientists (being Scorpions and urged on by the Warriors) included a three-ton Targeting Computer for maximum accuracy with the lasers. The final Goliath Scorpion design is the
Deathstalker 4. Forgoing any long-range weapons, the 4 model includes seven Leaper Model L7 jump-jets (for a maximum jump capacity of 210 meters) as well as a two-ton Myomer Acceleration Signal Circuitry (MASC) system that allows for a maximum sprint speed of 151.2 kilometers per hour. Armament consists of five Series 2 ER Medium Lasers (mounted one in the center torso, two in the right torso, and two in the left torso) and one Series 1 ER Small Laser (mounted in the head) tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer. Thirteen DHS is not enough to deal with the full heat production . . . but that is all that were was room for. Warriors assigned to this model must be cautious and keep a careful eye on their heat gauges to avoid shutdown in the midst of battle.

The Horse's demanded a more 'traditional' model that eliminates the Targeting Computer that their leadership sees as 'wasted' on a standard BattleMech. The main gun is a Type DDS "Kingston" ER PPC in the right torso. The left torso is fitted with four SEP Class SRM-4 launchers and two tons of ammunition. Fourteen DHS alleviate all heat generated by the weapons as well as that produced by the
Deathstalker 5 walking. Running does produce a slight amount of excess overheat, but this is almost inconsequential in scale.

The final production variant is the
Deathstalker 6; another Horse configuration that was first fielded in 3027. Born from a desire by Horse Warriors to increase the engagement range, the
Deathstalker 6 is armed with a Kolibri Delta Series Large Pulse in the right torso and a Type XX "Great Bow" LRM-20 with Atremis IV fire-control in the right torso. Four tons of ammunition (divided equally between the right and left torso) provides the Type XX with 24 full missile salvoes. Despite carrying just the base ten double-strength heat sinks common to any BattleMech, this variant is quite cool-running and incapable of generating excess overheat (under normal operating conditions, that is).

DeploymentThe first prototype
Deathstalkers entered the Scorpion and Horse Touman in 3017 after four years of laboratory trials and testing. The design quickly proved to be a capable one, and full-scale production was ordered to commence in 3020. Although Warriors initially assigned to these BattleMechs protested (the quad motive system being the primary source of their discontent), as they engaged in field maneuvers and combat trials in the new war-machines, these attitudes quickly changed. Today, these BattleMechs are prized in both the Scorpion and Horse Toumans for their maneuverability, armor protection, and firepower. The Herd has taken to buying excess production above and beyond their 15% share and today field the largest number of
Deathstalkers (in all configurations, not just the 5- and 6-series demanded by their Khans) . . . a fact which Khan Djerassi dislikes but is in no position to contest (at this time).
With the exception of Clans Coyote, Star Adder, and Wolf (who have each acquired quite a few examples of this BattleMech for their own testing and evaluations) the remaining Clans consider the
Deathstalker to be a waste of resources. The Wolves, especially, consider this opinion (on a BattleMech that the other Clans cannot
bother to test and evaluate for themselves) to be an example of stupidity.
