first off what book does Variable ranged system come from? what are the rules for it?

secondly even with Clan Lasers this thing is a target.  Hellstar does it cheaper and reaches further, and will frankly eviscerate this puppy.

and thirdly, When I hear Thunder in the name, I typically think loud noises made by Autocannons and Missiles, of which this has neither.  Flashbeast might be a better name.

Variable Range targeting comes from Max Tech and it reduces the targeting number by 1 of short or long range shots depending upon what range it is set on. I'm not sure if it is in other publications like Tactical Operations. A lot of 'Mechs have better range than the Thunderbeast but that only matters if you have line of sight and a valid shot (12 or less target number). Don't forget about all that Hardened Armor you'll have to chew through... In any case, at long range with an average Gunnery of 3, your target numbers, when the Hellstar manages to get shots, will frequently be in the double digits even against something like the Thunderbeast. Fair enough as far as the name goes :)

yeah, Max Tech is invalid in light of Tech manual and Tac Ops.

the hardened armor is an issue yes, but the Hellstar is naturally faster, and still cheaper on the BV front.  it can dictate the pace of the engagement and chew through the hardened armor at a medium range that would be long range for this puppy, or just flat out range it and let the PPCs do their thing.

Side note laser heat sinks only help in reducing ammo explosions under current rules if I remember right.  I'd save yourself resources and use doubles even mount less of them so you hit TSM quicker

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

I designed the Thunderbeast around the time of Max Tech and honestly, when I posted it recently, I didn't even think about whether stuff like the Variable Range System was in a subsequent book(s). I guess a lot of it is a matter of preference on movement, but I'd take a 3/4(5)/3 unit over a 4/6/0 any day if there was significant terrain. True, on an open battlefield starting with a large distance between them, the Hellstar would win hands down against the Thunderbeast but I don't see anyone claiming otherwise :)
