Overview
The Chameleon has been the training battlemech of choice since Battlemechs were brand new engines of war.  When the Elysian Defense Force began examining a low cost trainer for their growing Military academies, the use of these machines was never in doubt.  what was in doubt however was the weaponry it was equipped with, which in the eyes of the EDF made it a decent trainer for scout pilots, but did not provide a wide enough experience for Mechwarriors.

Capabilites
When EDF Buyers approached J.B. Mechworks for a large order of Chameleons with a short list of modifications their board was initially confused.  The reduced armor coverage, XL Gyro, and removal of all jump jets seemed peculiar at best.

the EDF Training command knew what they were doing however, and when they received the battalion they ordered went to work installing their custom weapons package.  The chameleon used by the Elysian Republic’s academies is now equipped to provide training experience with ballistic, energy, and missile based weaponry.  The central diagnostic computer can increase the “kick” of the 44mm cannon to simulate any known caliber or type of autocannon, and the missile rack can be changed by computer command to treat the MML 5 pack as an SRM 4 or LRM 5, keeping pilots familiar with the standard sizes of missile racks.

after the modifications were complete, it was discovered that engineers overestimated the amount of mass and space that would be needed to equip the Trainer, so 2 DEI Jump Jets were added to the back as an after-thought.

Deployment
By doctrine, every academy that trains mechwarriors must be equipped with at least one full company of these trainers.  Though considered “Active” in the EDF’s Master Table of Organization and Equipment, they are not considered combat assets

Notable Mechwarriors
Cadet Sgt Loc Tran: The only Mechwarrior in EDF history to retire officially as a cadet, Loc Tran was undergoing training as a Mechwarrior on Seoul when the Pirate coalition took the planet.  For much of the siege he was one of very few trained Mechwarriors with a battlemech.  When the Orbital Response Command dropped on Pyongyang, the planetary capital, Cadet Tran was already fighting, attempting to clear an LZ for what he thought was a dropship.  In addition to the numerous medals for his service during the siege, the O.R.C. rewarded him with their regimental tattoo.  He retired after Seoul was liberated, citing his term of service contract and the need to rebuild.

I really like it basic and smart weapons

I'd have maybe left off the JJs gone for a TAG or something instead give pilots a taste of using a designator as well

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

I can see the value in basic jump maneuvering as well, perhaps a one off in the acadamey motor pool
