Hey gang, more work in association with my Clarion Call story. In the near future I wanted to deploy some new cutting edge ComGuard Mechs designed post Tukayyid. Luckily we have some names and unused pictures from the ComStar SB that we can put to use. Whose up for it?
-
What tonnage are you looking for?
MA
-
Tonnage is up for grabs. The designs have to fit the pictures.
I grabbed the pictures here they are. Additionally we have two names the Star Python and the Galahad that we can use.
Let me know what you think!
-
The middle picture I think I know that mech and what it is. I will get back to you.
-
Since I don't own the ComStar SB, I hadn't seen those pictures before and my first thought was: "That third one is one ugly 'Mech!" That said, I'd like to help you, stating the 'mechs, since I enjoy reading clarion call and tinkering in SSW. Anyway, without further ado:
The first 'Mech looked like a heavy/assault 'Mech with at least two autocannons to me. As you requested cutting edge technology, I choose to use both the Ultra-5 and the LB 10-X ACs and finally ended up with this:
Galahad GL-HD-6C

Overview:
Following the Battle of Tukayyid, the ComGuards had proven to things: 1) They
were a force to be reckoned with and 2) the clans were far from unstoppable.
But they payed a high price doing so. Clan weaponry had a range advantage
against most of the Star League era equipment fielded by the ComGuards and as
the time came to rearm, Precentor Martial Anastasius Focht insisted on
developing new 'Mechs focussing on long range fire power to rival a clan 'Mech.
Mounting a mix of ballistic and energy long range, direct fire weapons, the
Galahad is everything the Precentor Martial could have asked for. A Blankenburg
Technology 200 ER Particle Projector Cannon, a Blankenburg ER Large Laser, a
General Motors Nova-5 series Autocannon and Myrdon Excel LB 10-X autocannon
give the 85 ton Galahad a staggering amount of fire power, while the fourteen
double heatsinks allow a very high rate of fire. All those weapons are mounted
in the arms, giving the Galahad an impressive arc of fire.
Furthermore, the Galahad incorporates the one important lesson learned on
Tukayyid: To win against the Clans, one has to fight a true war of attrition.
Thus, the Galahad is powered by a heavy but sturdy Strand 255 series Standard
Fusion Engine and protected by more than fourteen tons of Krupp 200
Ferro-Fibrous armor and it's six tons of autocannon ammunition are protected by
Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment.

Overview:
The Battle of Tukayyid was both the decisive campaign of the Clan Invasion and
the true trial of fire for the ComGuards. In a 19 days long series of brutal
battles all across the planet, the ComGuards where able to fight the Clan
Invasion to a stand still. Though successful in the end, the ComGuards payed a
high price both in personal and equipment for what has been described as the
salvation of the Inner Sphere from the tyranny of the clans.
The ComGuards had been equipped with Star League era and Anastasius Focht had
done his best to analyse every documented battle against the Clans to level the
battlefield, but none the less, the Clan 'Mechs proved to be far superior to
everything the ComGuards could field. In the aftermath of Tukayyid, the
Precentor Martial authorized a crash program to develop new 'Mechs to better
engage the Clans, when the truce with the Clans expires.
The Star Python is one product of this program. Designed as a light scout and
harasser, the Star Python is meant to fill all the holes in the ComGuard TOE,
that used to be filled with Wasps, Stingers and other traditional scout 'Mechs.
Due to greater reach of the clan weaponry and the high accuracy of pulse
weapons, light 'Mech lances suffered the worst losses of the ComGuard
'Mechforces. ComStar analyst concluded, that any future light 'Mech would need
long range, hard hitting weapons to compete with Clan 'Mechs. To counter the
threat of the new pulse laser, the analysts saw to possible ways: increasing
the speed of light mechs or increasing the armor protection. Calculations soon
showed, that the speed necessary to evade clan weaponry would prevent such a
'Mech from mounting enough weaponry to be of any use in battle.
Deciding on firepower and armor over speed, the Star Python mounts the maximum
possible amount of StarGuard 3056 Ferro-Fibrous armor. The main weapon of the
Star Python is a Blankenburg ER Large Laser, providing range and hitting power
comparable to the old Panther's Lord's Light Particle Projector Cannon, while
being nearly a third lighter. A Blankenburg Medium Pulse Laser and a Zone-Tone
Streak SRM-2 provide accurate close range firepower, enabling the Star Python
to engage fast moving enemies.
Finally, a head mounted Targeting Acquisition Gear allows the Star Python to
call upon accurate artillery fire, should it face a foe to strong to overcome
by itself. It also makes it a valuable member of a combined arms formation,
which have proven to be very effective against Clan forces.
Even though speed was never the main concern of the Star Python's design team,
a GM 210XL Fusion Engine propels the Python at speeds up to 100 km/h.
Additional mobility is provided by six Rawlings Model 60 Jump Jets, making it
equal to 'Mechs such as the Wasp and the Phoenix Hawk.

So far, I haven't come up with something for the third picture, mostly because I can't bring myself to look at it long enough to figure something out. :P
That said, feel free to use the two designs as you see fit and use/change as much of the fluff as you want to.

Good stuff Ronin! This is a tough assignment I grant you. You have to visually inspect each picture and determine its appropriate weight class plus weaponry. Not an easy thing and leaves a lot to the imagination. Before I go over yours in detail (they look pretty good at first glance) I'll show you what I came up with for the ugly Mech. :D

Was working on fluff and design when Ronin posted his two. I reasoned that the ugly Mech was a Light design and a visual inspection of the weaponry led me to give it an Ultra AC/5, two Medium Pulse Lasers, and three Small Pulse Lasers. So where did that leave me with fluff? Well there is one blurb in the CS SB that refers to the Star Python (which I was gonna call this) and the Galahad.
Both European facilities began manufacturing new BattleMechs based on Star League-era designs but using modern modifications. Two of these, the Star Python and the Galahad, have already been shipped to Com Guard garrisons across the Inner Sphere.
So I was thinking originally a prototype SLDF design perhaps never intended for deployment. It became a test bed production design for the ComGuards with all that SL era weaponry and equipment (Ferro-Fibrous and Endosteel). Either an urban warfare specialist (UrbanMech ugly too) or an anti-Elemental Mech. Often confused with the Nexus (another reference to the CS CB) which is also built by Skobel MechWorks.
-
Ronin I love what you came up with for the Galahad's weapons loadout and I agree with you on its weight classification as Heavy to Assault. The arsenal reminds me a lot of the Royal Rifleman of Gray Noton's Solaris 7 fame so I wondered if there was some inspiration there. Might add some fluffage on that but what I also wanted to do was honor the Galahad name. Not the ancient Gauss carrier of the Reunification War or the Clan Second Line Mech mind you. To me the name Galahad evokes some kind of a link to the Lancelot and this is what made me fiddle. Why not up weight your submission 5 tons, increase its movement by 1 MP so you can use the same engine as the Lancelot? Why is that significant well if you go back to the CS SB fluff which refers to the Star Python and the Galahad it has them produced at Skobel and Krupp respectively. The Lancelot was made by Krupp so the Galahad could be a successor to the Lancelot. What do you think?

Takiro, first of, I like your Star Python. But I don't see the Mech in the picture having to identical arms, the right arm looks more like a single barrel to me. Anyway, I don't have a simple refit handy so let
Oh, and you might want to re-check your armor calculation. According to SSW, 5.5 tons of ff are 98 points, not 99.
re the Galahad: I'm glad you like the weapon load. There wasn't much inspiration taking from the Rifleman II, I was just trying to grab as many shiny new toys as possible and since none of those weapons looked like a gauss rifle to me, I took both new autocannons and throw in some fitting energy weapons. I was quite satisfied when I realised, that the weapon pairs in both arms add up to the same weight.
That said, making it faster sounds good and the tie-in with the Lancelot makes for some nice fluff, so I'm all in favor for the changes.
-
Excellent, what would you recommend as a change to the arm weaponry for the Star Python?
-
Depends.
If you want to keep the Mech as city fighter / anti-elemental mech, I'd just drop the small pulse laser from the right arm and invest the remaining ton in armor, ammo or armor and case. (I'd put it armor and case, so you can fluff it as enhancing pilot survivability)
If you want to turn the mech in a long range fire support, you could mount a er large laser. To get the necessary 2 tons, you could either reduce the armor to near suicidal 3.5 tons, downgrade all other lasers to standard models and keep the armor level as is or downgrade either the medium or the two small lasers to standard models and reduce the armor by a ton.
If you want a fire support mech, I'd take an inspiration from the Nexus and mount firepower above all else, means I'd take the version with only 3.5 tons of armor.
-
Well I do like the Star Python as an ugly city fighter / anti-elemental mech so how about this. Drop the Small Pulse Laser from the right arm and turn the Ultra AC/5 into a Large Pulse Laser. Throw on some jump jets to increase its manuverability and add the left overs to armor.
The middle picture I think I know that mech and what it is. I will get back to you.
As to the second Mech is that the Arbalest from TRO3085 or what?

That would certainly be nasty in a city.
-
Yup just like that. ;) I was trying to figure out a way to fit another jump jet on there cause the armor is over board. You actually have excess points but if you minus a half ton of armor you don't have a critical to place it.
-
Well, the most practical way to fit in a sixth jump jet I can think of, would be to switch the armor for 6.5 tons of standard, This way you'd loose 15 points of armor.
-
That is an idea Ronin. We'd open up a lot of criticals.
Oh and a fluff idea why neither Mech has lower arm or hand actuators while mounting most of their weapons in the arms. Both the Star Python and the Galahad incorporate near modular techniques like arm mounted weaponry which can be swapped rather quickly. While not true omni technology of the Clans it is a next step similar to the semi-modularity seen in the Mercury.
-
Cool idea! I've always wondered, why the ComGuards didn't try to emulate the modular weapon mounts of the Mercury.
Anyway, I've been thinking about the last mech. Since we already have a fast assault and a slow-ish light, I decided to go for a fast medium with the last one. Since the wasn't a third name given, I named it after the General who defeated Attila and the Huns, I thought it would make sense after Tukayyid, playing the "We saved you all from the Barbarians!" card and all that.

Overview:
Named after Flavius Aetius, the roman General who defeated Attila the Hun on
the Catalaunian Fields more than 2500 years ago, the Aetius is one of the many
new designs fielded by the ComGuards after Tukayyid. Like his namesake, the
Aetius is meant to protect Civilization from the conquering hordes of the
Clans.
Designed to fight the Clans, the Aetius utilizes as much cutting edge
technology as possible, to create a mech that combines speed, firepower and
survivability in a way not seen since the final decades of the Starleague. The
mix of heavy energy weapons and precise missle systems makes it at every range,
while the inclusion of MASC allows the pilot to outrun everything he can't
outgun. Finally, the Pilot can call in friendly artillery strikes via the
headmounted TAG.

Not bad, I like the angle and she could be a replacement for the canon Grim Reaper. Hmm.....
-
Glad you like her! I'm not sure about her being a replacement for the Grim Reaper, though. Don't you think she lacks close-in punch, compared to the Reaper?

You misunderstand the use of the word replace. See being an AU certain designs may get shelved while others are advanced. ;)
