The board suspended development on the design and began to pin their hopes on the heavier FNR-5 Fafnir instead, only to see them dashed again when Archon Prince Victor Steiner-Davion declined to commission that design until such time as requested improvements to its weaponry should have been made. Forced into another rethink, they returned to the Defiance largely out of desperation. The chief flaw of the design as it stood was serious heat buildup, which could only be addressed by adding more heat sinks. In order to free up some of the needed space, the bulky triple-strength myomers the 'Mech had originally been intended to carry had to be replaced with standard myomers. Freeing up the rest of the required space and the necessary weight made some changes to the weaponry essential as well. The two SRM-6 launchers in the center torso and the experimental compact gyro which had conserved enough space to allow them both to be fitted into that location were replaced with a single Streak SRM-6 and a standard gyro. The head-mounted machine gun (and its ammunition supply) and the small lasers mounted in the left torso were all removed and replaced with a single head-mounted small pulse laser. Combined, these changes allowed the addition of three more double heat sinks and a ton of armor. The end result was a reasonably effective, if not particularly inspired, design which proved acceptable to procurement officers and was duly commissioned by the AFFC. After the first full production run had been completed, mediocre performance reports being filed by warriors assigned to pilot the machine, combined with the belated success of the Fafnir once the requested improvements to that design had been made, resulted in a decision by the company to scale down production of the Defiance. Some of the larger and more affluent mercenary commands are currently purchasing it in limited numbers, but once their orders have been filled as well production will probably be discontinued altogether. Obviously, in the end they didn't discontinue production! The DFN-6C and DFN-9C models (twin Enhanced ER PPCs and twin Plasma Rifles, respectively) are the only ones that ever attained anything approaching real popularity with pilots. Even they were generally regarded as inferior to the Warhammer, since all production variants of that design being manufactured in the Inner Sphere were eventually upgraded with CASE II while the Defiance lacked even standard CASE.

These two are kind of... dishonest in their model numbers. They were created as experimental refits by the Core Guards (the former Com Guards) following the overthrow of ComStar rule on Terra and its absorption by the newly-proclaimed Republic of the Core in 3139, even though the CGs knew perfectly well that there was no way the request by the upstart RotC for membership in the Second Star League would ever be granted.

Even individuals fated to go down in history as heroes of their respective factions aren't perfect, and Hanse "the Fox" Davion was no exception: the RFL-4D and RFL-5D models of the Rifleman are proof enough of that. Trying to make the Rifleman able to compete with the heavier Warhammer with a combination of first standard PPCs and then ER PPCs replacing AC/5s while keeping the standard large lasers produced two truly terrible variants with chronic overheating problems.

The RFL-6FC, -7FC and -8FC models of the Rifleman represent a deliberate rejection by designers of "Hanse's Follies" by switching from having two pairs of heavy energy weapons to having two pairs of light ballistic weapons.
