The Omega is a good design. We kidnapped it for Fanbook 3 of Shattered Dawn, Mercenary Guild.

Essentially, the St. Ives Compact took note of how the Draconis Combine created the CGR-3K Charger in an attempt to combine the speed of the CGR-1A1 with the weaponry of the CGR-1A9 and filed it away for future referance. When Candace Liao made the necessary resources available to Khorsakhov's Cossacks, they set about combining the speed of the CGR-1A1 with the weaponry of the CGR-1A2 to create the CGR-3SIC.

(They ended up producing, in effect, a heavier and more expensive imitation of the Maelstrom.)

Expensive upgrade for St. Ives and the Cossacks. I assume the Enhanced ER PPC is the Clan Wolverine developed weapon of the 2820s? How'd the Compact end up with that?

To quote from the Victor Victorious timeline:

On the plus side in innovation terms, however, the continued unity of the FedCom means that the intellectual powerhouse of the NAIS remains in regular contact with the research departments of major weapons manufacturers in Steiner space. Cross-fertilization of ideas leads somebody at Defiance Industries to stumble upon the same improved focusing techniques Clan Wolverine used to create the Enhanced ER PPC nearly 250 years before. The NER PPC is widely deployed across the FedCom within a few years and the other Successor States are able to copy the technology before long.

Eh, what can I say? My players and I all liked the concept a lot when it was introduced in Jihad Secrets: The Blake Documents and I decided to contrive the history of my AU a little to make it available to IS factions as of the late 3060s. I've considered doing the same with one or two of the other transitional technologies that the fledgling Clans developed by pushing the limits of the Inner Sphere Technology Base, before they made the switchover to the Clan Technology Base, that were featured in Interstellar Operations. As yet, though, I haven't.

Years ago now, over on the CBT forums, I made the point that even in the canon timeline, once Chandrasekhar Kurita learned that the Enhanced ER PPC had once existed, the PPC-loving DC ought to have made a determined effort to re-create it. Herb Beas conceded that I had a point but emphasized that, as the Dark Age novels made no mention of the IS factions having the technology by then, The Powers That Be at Catalyst couldn't give it to them. He went on to say, in short, that we should put it down to a combination of the disruption and exhaustion caused by the Jihad and the willingness of the Diamond Sharks/Sea Foxes to sell full-Clantech ER PPCs to the IS factions, in such quantities as they could afford, for the lack of a concerted effort to re-develop the Enhanced ER PPC.

I found that argument dubious at best... but then it was clear that Herb did too! It was simply the least bad argument he or anyone else in his position could have come up with under the circumstances. But although it was rather unconvincing in this particular case, given just how much the DC love PPCs, I think it's actually rather more convincing with most of the other Early Clan transitional technologies from IntOps. The ones I've been most tempted to introduce in the AU are the Improved SRMs (which weigh the same as standard Inner Sphere SRMs but have the increased range of Clan Streak SRMs), but I'm not sure the IS factions would consider them worth the effort. If only because, for example, for the same weight as a standard SRM-6 (or, hypothetically, an Improved SRM-6) you can carry a much more versatile MML-5. On the other hand, though, the Former FWL factions in particular really do love all kinds of missile weapons... and would be eager to add a new category of them to their arsenals.

Decisions, decisions... ! :-\

I came up with both of these soon after we finally got construction rules for Superheavy BattleMechs in Jihad: Final Reckoning. The original version of the Orca from the spoof TRO: Project Omega was supposed to have been built with an imaginary Exo Technology Base, with weapons having weight and crit requirements that were often in-between those of the Inner Sphere and Clan Technology Bases. Obviously, I made heavy use of the Mixed Tech rules for my version. Call me arrogant if you must, but I still think it's a little better than the canon version we eventually got in XTRO: Republic II.

The origin story? Well, after the Blakist War was finally over and ComStar had finally reclaimed Terra from the Word of Blake, they felt the need to posture a little by duplicating and surpassing what the WoB had already accomplished with prototype superheavies in the form of the SHP-X4 Ultimus, the functionally-identical AU version of the canon-timeline SHP-X4 Omega. Hence the OC-1X Orca. As a gesture of good faith towards their FedCom and DC allies, they shared the technical data with them. As a good-faith gesture of their own, the latter liaised with each other and with CS as they set about designing a proof-of-concept follow-up and all three eventually built functionally identical prototypes. Hence the OC-2A Orca II.

Posturing accomplished, all three then very sensibly mothballed the technology and concentrated on restocking their arsenals with more versatile conventional 'Mechs...

until the Inner Sphere-wide state of crisis precipitated by the AU version of the HPG Grid Blackout in 3139 led CS to resurrect the technology to create the NPT-V2 Neptune and MRS-V1 Mars, the functionally-identical AU versions of the canon-timeline PSD-V2 Poseidon and ARS-V1 Ares, in the 3040s...

only for Terra to then fall to the newly-proclaimed Republic of the Core and the technology to be delivered into their hands lock, stock and barrel. :P

Superheavy Mechs are neat and all but ill suited for anything other than siege combat.

No argument there... except to observe that they could be valuable for defending against a siege as well as prosecuting one. The whole business of standing alone in defense of a strongpoint that the Highlander was originally designed for springs to mind.

Note that a 130-ton Superheavy is (theoretically) a viable assault 'Mech, because it can move at 3/5 speed with a 390 XL engine.  Yes, you could theoretically put a superheavy XL engine on 135+ ton 'Mechs, but the weight of the engine quickly negates any tonnage advantage.

Basically, a Poseidon (125ton, with 375XL engine) with an optimized weapon load-out is a moderately nasty beast.

Of course, I love the ability to put a full-size Long Tom on any kind of 'Mech, so that's my own bias :)

Pretty much the whole reason I designed the Orca II was so I could put a Long Tom on it. ;D
