FX-1 Fox Quad Mech
« on: July 12, 2013, 10:20:24 AM »

High Test and I have two Competing ideals for a Light Quad for our Elysium Universe.  It really boils down to his uses all standard tech (with the exception of a Light PPC and a Quad Turret)  meanwhile I use Endo Steel and Double Heat sinks to get a little more kick out of an engine.  so we are putting it up to the masses.  Is the extra point of MP worth the increase in C Bills and Battle Value?

I don't think the difference in cost between the two designs is significant,  so I'd say the extra speed is worth the extra cost. Although the 1E is faster, I think the Tag makes it more versatile. If you're going for just armor and firepower, the 1 has the 1E beat. From just a damage perspective, I'd pick the 1 over the 1E.

To be completely honest, I think a militia would have room for both models.  The faster design with TAG would give artillery and missile carrying armor increased accuracy, however on the same note the slightly slower version packs an extra medium laser that gives it a little more direct engagement potential.  I think it mostly depends on the terrain and supporting elements which one would be better equipped for the job.

In all honesty,  what I would do, is endo steel on both, and see if the same engine could work, so they could deploy in tendem.  This way, your support units have the opportunity to make their presence known while slightly increasing the damage potential with an added medium laser in the mix from a lancemate.  I think if you went that route, the added expense of both the endo steel and bigger engine, in the end, would be worth the 250k c-bills each with them deploying as pairs.  Keeping the speed profiles the same would be incredibly important in any engagement where the TAG has to do good work.

I might write the FX-1 as an early production model to prove the frame and concept, and the 1E as the main production model.

kinda comes down to a number of things.

1: Procurement,  if you are ordering a relatively small number (say 20 or 30), the FX1E is faster, more upgradeable, higher tech, and only marginally more expensive.  Unless you are on an extremely tight budget, it is probably the better choice.  If however, you are ordering them by the thousands or tens of thousands, then that small per unit cost difference makes a difference...  Doubt you are on a tight budget if you are ordering 5k to 15k though...

2: Intended operators.  If this machine is intended for inexperienced drivers than the FX1E is again, the better choice.  The DHS make it impossible to overheat the machine, and for most lights speed is life.  As an aside, doesn't the -1MP due to heat also cause the running movement to be recalculated (or am I confusing my rule sets)?  If so, then 7/11 -1 is 6/9.  Such things can be important.

3: Production.  Usually lower tech is easier to produce.  Can be handy if your faction has either limited or vulnerable production facilities.  Keep in mind that the most vulnerable process is the measure of how easily production (and possibly repair) can be disrupted.

4: Maintenance.  How good are your techs, and the training system that produces them?  If any guy who graduates from your states' tech school is fully capable of maintaining the FX1E, then that is probably the better option.  If not, lower tech is usually easier to maintain...

5: Placed here because I'm sure I missed something.....

Interestingly, as a "What would I do?" exercise.  I'd put the TAG on the FX1 in place of 1 ML, LPPC+ML=8 heat, add 2 for running (=10) and no overheat.

The FX1E has WAY more cooling,  LPPC+(MLx2)=11 heat, add 2 for running (=13) still no overheat.  Should we maybe put ERMLs in there (still only 15+2 heat)

If I could squeeze one more ton outta the 1E that would make me so happy (third ERML or TAG).  Maybe a small cockpit? This though, starts to redesign the machine...

Hope that helps...

the EDF is a relativly small top heavy formation (our signature mechs are the Wolverine, Rampage, and a Custom 75 Ton Omnimech called the Lioness) consisting of a front line military of 16 combined brigades that are equipped with about 50 battlemechs, two support divisions that have a reinforced Regiment between them (a Combat Engineers Division and Artillery Division) and planetary Militas possessing about a reinforced company of mechs each.  the Fox is decidedly a Low Capacity Operation, with about 1,000 ordered.

The Elysium Federation is designed to be the "High Tech" Deep Periphery State.  Endo Steel, XL engines, and Double Heat sinks are easy.  Some weapons tech is not developed due to cost and lack of solid use (for example Heavy Gauss Rifles Exotic LRM launchers, LBX and Ultra AC 2s, though we make RAC 2s).  ER Lasers are on this list because Light PPCs and ERPPCs cover the range we need.

I was hoping to help you clarify your own thought process...  You did however ask for an opinion, and I didn't really give you one.  Apologies for that.

Seems to me that you are building a quality over quantity force while attempting to limit costs (bang for the buck).  The more advanced FX1E while not maximized, is still better for this as it is more forgiving of a novices' mistakes.  This helps keep both the machine and warrior in one piece.  The extra cooling allows for other upgrades (or even lateral upgrades) as time goes on.  Should the need and opportunity arise (say, captured enemy equipment) the stronger cooling system allows for more effective operation under such circumstances.

I would go with the FX1E, If I can afford to.

If not, I would instead put TAG on the FX1 in place of the second ML, and make that the standard issue Fox quad.

Hope that helped.

no problem I thought you were digging for a little context.

bang for the buck is exactly what we are going for.
