Overview:
With the winds of change blowing in the direction of the Crusaders, the Khans
of Goliath Scorpion launched a massive program to upgrade and retool their
entire toumen in the wake of the Dragoon Compromise. Realizing that the
return to the Inner Sphere would require new thinking, new equipment, and new
tactics, the Khans directed the scientist caste and several dozen former
warriors to design and build a series of BattleMechs that would give the
Scorpions sharp new claws to defend their Nests and carve out new territories.
Instead of cutting edge OmniMechs, the Khans of Goliath Scorpion decided
instead to invest fewer resources in the older BattleMechs. Not only would
this consume fewer vital resources, but as the Scorpion warriors tended to use
only ballistic and energy weapons capable of interlocking into the Clan
targeting computers, many OmniMech configurations went unused by the Clan.
Although the Khans knew that their return to the older non-Omni technology
would be seen by their fellow Clansmen as a sign of weakness, they believed
that it made possible the most efficient use of limited resources. Indeed, as
the new designs slowly came into existence over the decades following the
dispatch of Wolfs Dragoons to the Inner Sphere, warriors assigned to test the
new machines in secret were very pleased with the weapons arrangement and fixed
systems, as well as the general robustness of the new designs. One small
change that the Khans did incorporate on all of these new Mechs was the
installation of numerous brackets, rails, and steps on the external surface of
the Mech; this allowed Elemental infantry to ride atop the new Scorpion
BattleMechs as easily as their fellows on standard Omnis.
Produced in secret over the course of two and a half decades in factories
concealed beneath the Temple of the Nine Muses on Roche, the sudden revelation
of these new war-machines caused consternation and concern among all of the
Clans at the prospect of a revitalized and aggressive Clan Goliath Scorpion.
Older, common Clan designs were phased out of service overnight, replaced with
units never before seen.
Fifty years after the Compromise and the orders to begin construction on their
new war machine, the Goliath Scorpions revealed to their fellow Clansmen the
results of that directive on the very eve of the launch of Operation Revival.
Ten new classes of BattleMechs were unveiled--each far more powerful and
capable than any such non-Omni constructed in the past century. Had the
Scorpion Khans lowered their bids during the trials, they might well have
captured one of the invasion slots due to the skill of the Scorpion warriors
and the effectiveness of their new Mechs. But, with the history of the Inner
Sphere at their disposal, the Khans and their senior officers refused to lower
their bidding alongside the other Clans scrambling for one of the coveted
slots.
Although warned of the dangers of underbidding, the Khans of Ghost Bear, Jade
Falcon, Nova Cat, Smoke Jaguar, and Steel Viper failed to heed the Scorpion
(and Adder) warnings. Denied a spot in the invasion force, the Scorpions did
not launch a Homeworlds offensive like the Hellions, but instead retired to
their enclaves and defended their holdings furiously. Their older equipment
was soon afterwards being traded for resources with the invaders as the
Crusader losses in the inner sphere steadily climbed. Following Tukayyid, the
Scorpion stockpiles of common OmniMechs and older BattleMechs were finally
depleted as frantic Jaguars and Falcons and Vipers and Cats and Bears and
Sharks and Wolves hurriedly tried to rebuild shattered units and broken
toumens. Although they did not participate in the invasion, the Scorpions
managed to make Revival and the Invader Clans pay for virtually all of their
own upgraded and modernized units.
Among the lightest of the new BattleMechs introduced prior to Revival was the
30-ton Hooded Eagle. Named after the genetically altered raptor introduced to
the deserts of Babylon by the SLDF exiles following the Exodus, the Hooded
Eagle honors its namesake by serving as a swift, keen-eyed outrider of the Clan
that delivers a devastating and precise attack seemingly out of thin air. The
Hooded Eagle is a massive bird-of-prey, measuring some two-and-a-half meters in
wingspan; larger, even, than the famed Jade Falcon. Soaring high on the
thermals above the wastes of Babylon, this raptor relies on its keen vision to
spot even the smallest of prey on the broken ground far below and then dives to
impale its dinner on its fearsome talons before tearing apart its flesh with
its mighty hooked beak. Blue-white and grey feathers cover the underside of
the body, wings, and tail, while the dorsal surfaces are patterned in splashes
of red, yellow, and orange. All of this allows the bird to blend into the sky
overhead or the wastes below. Only the head of this bird breaks the
camouflage. Feathers of jet black cover the head and neck, resembling nothing
so much as the hood of an executioner. Upon viewing the coloration, and
seeing the lethal plunging dive of this raptor, the settlers named the species
the Hooded Eagle. And in honor of that animal, the Goliath Scorpions gave its
name to their newest light BattleiMech.
Capabilities:
Massing 30-tons, the Hooded Eagle is only slightly slower than the premier Clan
recon 'Mech (the Fire Moth) with a top speed of 151.2 km/hr versus a sustained
maximum speed of 162.0 km/hr for the older war-machine. The Hooded Eagle does
lack the MASC system carried by the Fire Moth, however, which can boost its
overland speed to 216.0 km/hr for short sprints--albeit at the cost of risking
damage to its own leg actuators. Armor protection for the Hooded Eagle is
nearly three times that of the Fire Moth, with five-and-a-half tons of
ferro-fibrous carried versus a mere two tons. Similarly, the new BattleMech
features a more resilient and robust internal structure able to absorb and
dissipate greater amounts of damage than the Fire Moth, as befits a 'Mech
massing ten more tons. As befits a front-line Clan ‘Mech, the Hooded Eagle is
outfitted with both endo-steel internal structure and ferro-fibrous composite
armor plating.
The Hooded Eagle is armed with three extended-range medium lasers (RA, RT, LT)
and a pair of Anti-Personnel (AP) Gauss in the left arm, fed by a magazine
containing forty bursts of fire. Each of these light Mechs is equipped with an
Active Probe (in the right torso) and an ECM Suite (in the left torso) to
provide electronic-warfare support to members of its star. For defensive fire,
an Anti-Missile System has been installed in the head of the BattleMech, fed by
a one-ton ammunition bin in the center torso that holds a total of twenty-four
bursts of fire. All direct-fire weapons (the ER Medium Lasers and AP Gauss)
are tied into a one-ton targeting computer located in the center torso. This
piece of equipment allows the MechWarrior assigned to a Hooded Eagle to
concentrate his fire against a single targeted location on his opponent,
allowing the Scorpions to literally dismember their foes. Ten double strength
heat sinks are standard equipment on the Hooded Eagle as well. This is more
than sufficient to dissipate heat generated by all weapons and movement.
The decision to manufacture the Hooded Eagle as a BattleMech as opposed to an
OmniMech resulted in a final price tag nearly of nearly six million Kerenskys
less than an Omni outfitted with similar equipment (approximately 1.5 million
C-bills). The slight decrease in operational flexibility was more than
outweighed--in the opinion of Scorpion warrior--by the overall savings in
resources and the hard-hitting array of fixed weapon systems.
Deployment:
The Hooded Eagle has been assigned in limited numbers to both the Scorpion
Hussar Clusters and the Scorpion Dragoon Clusters. Still, this 'Mech (along
with the Emerald Mantis) is the least common of any of the new BattleMechs
fielded by Clan Goliath Scorpion. It is also commonly used in Scorpion Sibko
Training Units.
Despite the effectiveness of this design, other Clans have expressed disdain at
its non-Omni status. Hence, there have to date been no batchalls issued for
this 'Mech. However, just as the Scorpion Khans predicted, many of the more
aggressive Clans (including Ice Hellion, Jade Falcon, and Smoke Jaguar) did
interpret the replacement of front-line Omnis with these new BattleMechs as a
concession of Scorpion weakness--the response of Scorpion warriors to their
testing of that theory proved the hypothesis to be a false one.
Variants:
There is one variation of the basic Hooded Eagle design, although it is not a
true factory variant. The Hooded Eagle-TAG removes one ER Medium Laser and
replaces it with a Target Acquisition Gear (TAG) system. Used for artillery
forward observers, this modification is only seldom used in the typical
skirmishes that take place in the Clan homeworlds. Accordingly, the design
team of scientists that created the Hooded Eagle equipped one of the torso
mounted lasers (the left torso unit) with a modular connection capable of
instead accepting a TAG unit. Although technically not Omni in nature, this
does allow Scorpion commanders to reconfigure Hooded Eagles to call artillery
fire. Unlike more traditional Omni systems, it requires several hours of work
by technications to pull the laser and replace it with a TAG unit.
Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors:
Star Captain Aleisha LeClair commands Trinary Epsilon of the elite 6th Scorpion
Hussars (Desert Wind) from the cockpit of her Hooded Eagle. This Striker
Trinary consists of four Hooded Eagles and six Death Weaver OmniMechs, along
with four Comanche and six Navaho OmniFighters. Normally tasked to provide
recon support for the 6th or for Beta Galaxy (The Sand Runners), Star Captain
LeClair has proven to be exceptionally aggressive, even for a Clan officer.
Relying upon the superior armor, speed, and maneuverability of her light Mechs
and fighters, she has, on more than one occasion, turned recon and flanking
patrols into assaults onto isolated Clan forces of medium and heavy weight
Mechs. So far, luck and the Scorpion reliance on precision targeting has
prevented Epsilon from taking serious damage in these skirmishes, but her
superiors recognize that if she continues to recklessly play against the odds
they will eventually cost her and her warriors a heavy price.
LeClair, on the other hand, openly yearns for the day when she can engage an
Adder, Bear, Coyote, Falcon, or Jaguar assault star with her lights; seeing
only the glory to be earned in defeating such opponents with her Strikers.
Only months away from turning 30, the Star Captain believes that she will be
soon be reassigned to a second-line galaxy, or even a PGC, unless she manages
to achieve an impressive victory over a superior force. She has not been able
to understand that it is her methods and tactics, not her age, that have turned
her superiors against her. Ironically, even as her un-Scorpion like
tendencies have estranged her from her own Clan, other Clans such as the
Hellions, Vipers, and Cats have begun to launch batchalls against the Goliath
Scorpions with LeClair and her progeny as the prize.
